My first ever PC build was a bit like that... AMD Duron 1.3GHz and I thought more paste was better.. wondered why the thing always ran hot...

HP did this in my old laptop. The thermal pad doesn't touch anything.
I added some crappy paste between the "heatsink" and the metal block on the right that cools an inductor. They did the same thing that they did here. There was a thermal pad next to that block that was not touching anything.Last edited by lti; 05-05-2014, 07:52 PM.Comment

I've seen something similar on a Pentium 4 chip (though not as memorable for sure). Of course, with the Pentium 4, you have a heat spreader so it doesn't look as bad. Nonetheless, it was, because there was a ton of leftover paste on the side of the CPU and the heatsink. The paste looked at least 1 mm thick. No wonder the CPU fan was all over the place (the motherboard was a P4SD out of a HP DC5000 - and they do actually have fan speed control).
By the way, sorry for reviving a thread like this. I wanted to reply to this when it was still fresh but didn't have time due to exams and now I'm going through my bookmarks and finding a few others I haven't replied to.Comment

I have a Dell Latitude 5570 that was randomly shutting down, on further investigation i found that the machine had been shutting down due to thermal events as noted by windows event viewer.
My investigations lead me to the dell diagnostics screen, where i found that there were two sensors out of range which had been causing the shutdowns, one of which was the GPU thermal sensor and the other the ambient sensor.

Before thermal paste replacement, I measured CPU temperature Around 65-70 degrees Celcius with stock thermal paste. If after the replace thermal paste, I measured CPU temperature around 80-84 degrees Celcius and fan don't stop when system is idle. I replaced the thermal paste several times but still did not change. Where is the problem?

I have got an ordinary gray thermal paste that has no name/model on the box.
I put some of this thermal paste on a 128-pin QFP IC. A bit of this thermal paste was put on pins of the IC.
I tried to clean the pins by thinner but the thermal paste cannot be cleaned from the pins properly. because the pins are tiny and the thermal paste is stuck between them.
Is it possible that the thermal paste damages pins of the IC in long term by creating corrosion or something?
Is it safe to leave the thermal paste on the pins?

I have a Velodyne DPS-12 subwoofer that was making weird noises. Upon taking it apart, I noticed there was yellow glue all over the circuit board which had turned brown, so I scraped it all off and that fixed the problem. I used hot glue instead around the various components.
There was also one bulging capacitor, and another that must've been in a really hot location because the labelling looked like it was scorched. You can see in the picture the circuit board has discolored over time from this heat. Could either be from the MOSFET (with heatsink), or the resistor....-

by gurj1979Hey guys, I need help with my personal MSI GP62MVR-7RF. Annoying fan / thermal issue.
Machine Idle. Fan will spin medium speed for 4 seconds, then off for 1 second. Repeat forever.
CPU and GPU are cold. No load, just sitting doing nothing.
It's clean inside, nothing blocked. New MX4 paste.
Updated BIOS, EC, and VBIOS but nothing's helped.
Schematic shows 2 thermal resistors, but they're OK.
All thermal signals are good, inc PCH.
Has anyone ever come across this ? Any idea what to do ?
