Recently I was given for free a Sony RCD-W3 with the following symptoms, CD recorder drive reads CDs without any issues (haven't tested recording function yet because I don't intend to burn CDs on that machine) but the reader drive shows disc error after some seconds of it trying to read CD. Tried both CD-Rs and commercial audio CDs with same results.
First thing to do was to clean the lens but that didn't change anything. Googling the issue revealed that this is a common issue on several Sony CD recorder machines and the culprit is SMD electrolytic caps located on the PCB bellow...

Sony RCD-W3 Deck A (Playback only) not playing CDs (Disk Error) repair

At last I found some time and tried to repair the dust cover of the woofers that had that issue. I used super strong duct tape to pull the dust cover out.
On one of the woofers, the glue that is supposed to keep the dust cover attached and sealed on the speaker cone has been gone.
What type of glue should I use to seal the hole shown in the pic bellow?
Is epoxy glue 2 component suitable for this type of application?1 Photo

I created this thread mainly about the tweeter but let me take the chance to ask a question about the dust cover of the woofers.
When the dust cover is poked in like this :

does this affect the sound? Because I was under the impression that people try to fix this just for aesthetics and not because it impacts the sound.
Yeap, the tweeter is open circuit to multimeter and as expected totally silent when connected to an amp.
I carefully removed it, posting pics...7 Photos

Speakers damaged from children. Can this tweeter be repaired?
I got these speakers that seem to be damaged from the previous owners small children.
As you can see on the first pic, the tweeter's outer membrane has been totally ripped.
I also post another pic with the other speaker that survived...
Is this beyond repair?
I have no clue about soft dome tweeters.2 Photos

Re: Sony STR-DE445 did I get a faulty IC?
Oh no
I feel so stupid now... The CNP103 connector was not fully inserted for some reason. It got partially out during troubleshooting or was not properly inserted in the first place.
The amplifier now works perfectly fine!
I get to set tremble/bass, enable digital effects like "HALL" , "JAZZ" etc, and of course tested it with dolby digital / dts source and it worked without any issue.
So the Chinese replacement CODEC IC was fine. Already left positive review...Last edited by goodpsusearch; 04-17-2023, 02:09 PM.

Re: Sony STR-DE445 did I get a faulty IC?
Hello.
I really appreciate your reply.
I checked every capacitor with ESR micro and Chinese transistor tester on the digital board and replaced the bad ones. I also put out caps that I had trouble testing them on pcb and tested them desoldered to be sure they are ok.
Τhen I checked all voltage regulators on digital board, those are 3 7805 and a 3.3V reg. All voltages were in spec, lowest was 4.8V for 5V. There is one extra 4.11Volt that is achieved with zener diode if I remember...

Sony STR-DE445 did I get a faulty IC?
Hello, I got this AVR for cheap and tried to fix it as a fun and learning project.
First the audio video receiver would turn on but had no sound at all, but no "PROTECT" message.
So, I opened the metal case and noticed some marks showing that some liquid has been spilled on the amp. Those water marks were found on the main board and the digital board.
I disassembled everything, then checked every single cap on every board of the amp and recapped when needed.
Also fixed A LOT of cold solder joints and also done some modifications,...Last edited by goodpsusearch; 04-15-2023, 04:51 PM.

Re: Roister Pb-150 Subwoofer repaired, how to prevent from failing again?
Ok, this will be a really long post!
According to Greek audiophile forums, this company uses Vifa speakers, I don't know if they are considered good or not. Could you tell from the pics if the woofer is magnetically shielded?
The relay is HLS-4453(18F) 240VAC 5A 30VDC DC24V
I think I found the datasheet:

Re: Samsung LE40m87BD ... no backlight
Unfortunately, this didn't go well.
First tried the method of measuring AC voltage on every test point of every transformer feedback output and try to find the one that stands out.
Couldn't figure out the wrong one, maybe my multimeter was too slow to catch the peak voltage of the bad ccfl.
Then started shorting test points to ground one by one to find out the faulty ccfl from the test point that when shorted would cause the TV set's backlight to stay ON.
Nothing happened.
Something...Last edited by goodpsusearch; 03-05-2022, 07:41 PM.

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2
Where I work, we had a Corsair VS450 that had its fan almost seized.
The fan was barely moving and the PC was buzzing due to vibrations from the dying fan.
We have bought ~ 15 Corsair VS power supplies (CWT platform) and none of them had its fan fail until now. Some of them failed due to dried primary caps (Aishi 400V).
I knew that Corsair/CWT put Yate Loon fans on VS series, so I was shocked to find a Chinese crap fan inside this unit:

Re: Philips F9217L-50R speakers – build quality impressions and DIY surround repair
Believe it or not someone sells those speakers for 110€ :

He even claims that the sound is perfect.

Re: Technics SU-Z45 vintage amplifier repair
Totally agree with you on this.
It is next to impossible to balance volume levels, early reflections, height of each speaker, etc.
I think that the modern Audio Video Receivers solve many of those issues with the automatic calibration software with the use of microphone, such as audyssey multeq-x and Yamaha ypao.
I am "lucky" that my room doesn't allow a center speaker so I have to deal with only 4 speakers and a sub.
Here is another pic of my bedroom:

Re: The ghetto mod thread
I got this sub with its back surround tweeters and the center speaker. The front left and front right tweeters are missing and unfortunately one of them had the control buttons. So the system is dead. I use the back tweeters to test repaired amplifiers since I don't care if they get damaged. But first I connect a speaker I took out from a trashed and broken black and white CRT TV.
The linear transformer is also missing but I can use a laptop adapter without issues here. Same goes to the Altec Lansing system that has a bad...
