1ohm is pretty big at that current, it will register a noticable voltdrop across it.
that could be what the microcontroller is sensing....

they leak in sega arcade equipment leading to trace repairs
they used to leak in vrc's but it was a minor issue because they used single-sided boards.
the only ones that didnt leak were the old ELNA ones that were in thick steel cans - they probably knew something!...

intel has fresh problems now,
the cpu root0 key and others have been hacked.
so hackers can compromise your microcode or just treat the cpu like their bitch if it can VM in debug mode!
also they are in a financial hole and laying off staff left&right.
they are even talking about splitting the company so if the cpu side goes down they can still hold onto the factories to make dies for other companies!...

interesting leds.
probably not cree, but thats not important - there are a number of good led companies now....

thats the guts from an led lamp,
those only last 6-9months for cheap ones.
so what colour did it light?
that is normally on an aluminium cone to disperse the heat...

if they are near-uv they wont look bright.
i have a bag of 100 3mm ones and they dont look bright but they throw out a lot of uv because stuff glows all over the desk when i power one....

interesting, it has no feedback wire.
so it's got the thermocouple in series with the element.
that means it senses voltage in between the pulses of 24v to the heater.
unplug the iron from the base, connect the element wires to a meter set to volts and heat the tip with a lighter or hot-air.
see if you see a rising voltage from the iron.
if you do then put the correct value resistor back on that board and start looking at feedback circuits with an opamp....

pictures of the modules would be good, i'v only had the older ones with a flourescent tube.
are you sure it's not just dead leds?...

check the cable to the iron - they can break.
and post some pictures...

if it's that long you need to inject power at several points along it's length.
if not then it may blow a track open from the current flow!...

just connect 12v to the flickering section and see if it works o.k.
if it does then you need to find the bad wire joint.
if an led fails it shouldnt effect the rest because they are in parallel...

power the flashing section with some fresh wire to test it.
it sounds like a wiring problem.
you have to power the strips every 5-10m because of voltdrop - thats directly from the manufacturers instructions.
if you have a 10m strip you power both ends for even brighness for example....
