    LCD or CRT

Who's still using what, I'm just curious... I've always been a LCD hater until recently... I'm just curious as to who has followed suit and ditched their CRT monitor for a LCD display...

    Re: LCD or CRT

i dont see any purchases of CRT here in the future.

if the PVA panels had not been developed however, i could not see using an LCD for working on photos

    pros
    LCDs are easier to service
easier to carry to repair shop
    easier on the eyes

    cons
the tubes failing. can we move to LEDs soon?
easier to damage the panel by scratching

I'd still be using a CRT except they keep dying. Totally unreliable, so I'm on an LCD now. It's also easier on my eyes.

            Re: LCD or CRT

I used to use CRT displays until recently I decided that they ran hot and burn a lot of energy.

I also felt that most CRT displays are unreliable in the long run. I have had 2 CRT displays die on me, an LG Studioworks 775N.... The Diamond View 1770e didn't die, but it kept losing power and clicking/ popping in operation.

Now I have 2 CRT displays left, a 17" Diamond View 1770g and a CTX 15". The CTX is on its way out since it pops and clicks and I even get a white display at times. The Diamond View is still in a good condition.

I have 2 LCDs now, a Sony SDM-HS73 and a BenQ FP937s. They are both great LCD panels but the 17" Sony display has nicer colours and a clearer display. For the Media Center I use an LG 42" Plasma display.

              i have a mix here.
i use a sgi(sony) 24" flat crt on my main system.
i have several cheap lcd on testbenches where i need the space and dont play games/dvd's
i guess i am too picky when it comes to lcd monitors.
              i have 1 21"samsung i use on a second system.
none can touch the sgi sony.
knowing the issue with the focus death on the crt i snagged a new crt on ebay last year.

                Re: LCD or CRT

My favorite Viewsonic 19" GS790 just died, and I replaced it with a used LCD hauled away from a customer upgrade.

The LCD is brighter (and free), but the usable image is smaller. It occupies much less desk real estate, but that free space is still wasted in my case. The 19" CRT was the short wheel base variety with the 100-degree tube. I have the LCD moved toward the front of the desk where my glasses are dialed in, so the free space behind it goes to waste for now.

I figure the CRT has bad caps, but I'm disinclined to aquiesce to the urge to open it open and attempt repair. I'm not a high voltage tech, and poking around in a monitor can be lethal.

I have swaped my 21" Siemens CRT with a Acer FP751 17" (freebee, i only payed the caps), ist far better with 1280x 1024 resolution now.
With the Siemens it was not as sharp and difficult to view.
I could have fixed this probably with some resoldering and some new lytics, but i have not mutch clue about CRT servicing....withouth service manual it is a pain..

Now i have one Medion 19" crt, wich was a freebe too (only in service for about a halfe year before it failed; customer lost warranty bon....).
After resoldering the CRT tube PCB and replacing some Elite brand caps it is now working fine and very sharp.
But it is getting hot and smells like crap (the ususall "new elektronics" smel, very tight packing and completely housed in a second iron cage, may be to reduce radiation, but not mutch convection now ).

The other monitor is a 17" Medion CRT, still from the PII era, but after the usuall resoldering it is working withouth problems.

I think i will son got to 19" wide screen TFT, as theyr that damn cheap (about 160€).
I think if i put some bether caps in, even those should last a long time.

Still have a CRT in use for another computer here though... Work is mostly LCD

Still using a Mit 2060u NF, DOM 23rd week of 2001. Gave $350+shipping in 2003. Still works very well. Old reviews said it offered the sharpest text along with the best graphics of the time.
If anyone has a NEC(CRT/LCD) or old Mitsubishi be sure to try the NaViSet software offered at NEC's site.
Sister uses an old Compaq 17"CRT for email, word & power point.

I gave my 24" FD Trinitron to a needy friend that was doing awesome graphics work on an old 17" crt.... He's loving the 24" trinitron and I'm loving the 24" LCD... I can't even look at a crt now, it hurts my eyes. I also noticed I dont get headaches anymore...

I have a few LCDs in my house, mainly on laptops, but also one on my main desktop PC. The other computers still use CRTs though. To be honest, I've always preferred the sharper picture of an LCD, even though people say they have less vivid colors...

I play video games on a fairly large CRT TV, although I also have an LCD mounted to the ceiling (facing downwards) so I can watch TV lying in bed! The main TV downstairs is a 16:9 LCD, though the picture is spoiled a bit by the built-in DVNR circuit...
You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

If I could afford 17+ inch panels with DVI then I would be using them right now. I'm however a poor boy and I am stuck with IBM P201 monitors for now.

I, too, prefer the sharpness of an LCD. I use an older Sony 17" panel at home, and am currently working on getting a no-name 19" panel to fixed at work.

                                    Re: LCD or CRT

Huh... I still feel that a CRT delivers the best image quality overall. My ViewSonic E771 CRT doesn't get any warmer than my ViewSonic X-Series 19" Widescreen LCD. I don't see any problem with a CRT except that it occupies space, but there's not much more room if I switched to an LCD, unless I replace my computer with a XPC or something. There's no difference that I can notice between an LCD and CRT besides that an LCD is somewhat brighter. Neither give me headaches or any sort of medical issue. Plus, contrary to what Will said, I think that CRTs are easier to service because of the extra room and that everything is big enough so you can see it. LCDs are too compact.

I would stick with large CRT's forever if I didn't have to open them every few years and manually increase the brightness and contrast. Heat wise they are great in the summer and since they are just under the window the summer is okay.

                                        Re: LCD or CRT

Once I got used to the sharpness of LCDs, there was no going back to CRTs.
I've dumped all my 17" CRTs 4 years ago, replaced with LG-based 18" Dell Ultrasharps.
And picked up a 20.1" Dell Ultrasharp based on a Philips panel, last year.
All three run via DVI and at native res. (you must run them at native)
I'm not a gamer, so the lack of contrast/response time are not a problem.

I'm also awaiting the next generation of displays before any more upgrades. Organic LED, and DLP-LASER for HDTV.
