  • Re: Nikon D40X : hacking a power supply?

You don't want to be using a D40X for anything except as a backup camera. The ISO performance on it is pretty low for 2018 standards. In addition to this the DR is also quite... behind at about 10 stops or so. Your D5100 is still a superior camera in many ways...

As for your battery question, just get an eBay battery. I paid $10 for a generic EN-EL9 battery. This same battery is also used in my D3000 and D5000 cameras (which I haven't touched for years - currently on a Nikon D4s and D750) saves you the hassle of...

  • Re: Asus ROG laptop no power

I take that back. The Asus charger actually does have 19V coming out of it after I re-measured it - something is dead in the laptop, not the PSU as first thought.

  • Asus ROG laptop no power

    Hi Everyone,

Just cleaning the house today and I found an Asus G550J ROG laptop. It was in a laptop bag behind a door collecting dust. Asked my brother about it and he said it's been there for two years plus. His friend dropped it off to get it going again as it just died one day all of a sudden. My brother said he thinks the motherboard is dead because it has no lights on at all.

I decided to tinker with it. First thing I measured was the power supply, it shows zero volts. No output power at all! I'm guessing this is why the laptop isn't showing any signs of life....

  • Re: Another Goofy Sleeper System

Good minds think alike, TC! As of three weeks ago, I pulled out my old AOpen case from the early 2000’s when Windows XP was the thing. Also a boring beige and I was doing a sleeper build too with a new Ryzen system.

    DisplayPort woes

    Hi Everyone.

Just bought a new LG Ultra wide monitor today. Love it to bits, however I am having an issue with displayport.
Displayport works and displays an image without issue, however if I were to turn off the monitor or simply change source... if I flick back or turn on the monitor again while the PC is still on... it displays "no signal". I would have to turn the computer off completely or reset it for the monitor to get a signal again. This behaviour does not happen on HDMI - I can turn off the monitor while my PC is still on, and switch it back on without...

  • Re: Saving a Sony Bravia KDL-46X3100 (HELP PLEASE)

Yeah I ended up ditching the TV and put it on eBay. Sold for $1 but buyer reckons he can fix it though. Luckily he picked it up and organised everything - was way too heavy for me to lift to his truck!

But alas, thanks for the help anyway everyone!...

  • Re: Viewsonic displays still good nowadays?

I ended up with plan B up above, donated my brand new Viewsonic to mum for her Netflix movies. She loves every inch of it!

Meanwhile I am using her old (well 3 month old) Phillips 32" IPS LED display. No dead pixels and colour is spot on accurate as well (even more than the Viewsonic 10 bit panel - this is only 6 bit) - makes me wonder why I even bothered with the Viewsonic to start with when I could just have taken my mother's screen!

  • Re: Viewsonic displays still good nowadays?

RD, I had the mindset of 10 years ago when I saw some posts here about Viewsonic being good. Clearly I wasn’t too updated on this matter and got myself a Viewsonic thinking they were OK. Guess I made a bit of a mistake as times have changed.

Gotta agree though my last unit was a HP ZR2240 business S-IPS display, no dead pixels etc however had too many hours on it being an ex lease and the panel colour was too “off” for the photo work I do on a daily basis. I’m more in the market for a colour correct...

  • Viewsonic displays still good nowadays?

    Hi Everyone,

Just got myself a Viewsonic 43" 4K UHD monitor, however it's my second DOA unit already with regards to dead pixels. My current one also has about 6 dead pixels, but a bit better since it's in the corners and not smack bang in the middle. Strange thing with this display is that the pixels die in clusters, not just pixels alone, at first glance I thought it was dust in the monitor during production - but when Viewsonic got in touch it was dead pixels.

Here in Oz, we get 30 days with Viewsonic with regards to dead pixels where they give you a brand new...

  • Re: BUDGET 4K graphics cards

UPDATE: Got my 4k 43" monitor - it's a beauty! The old card could only run at 30Hz and as Per said, even the mouse cursor lagged!

I purchased a budget Asus 1030 Nvidia card as I couldn't wait another few months for my brother to upgrade his AMD card and pass it down... I am now running full 4K at 60Hz through HDMI 2.0 - all good now!

Thanks everyone for the help. :-)

Now that I am wide awake, I can see the left side of the image is slower than the right hand side of the image?

I also cracked it open to take a look inside and everything looks fine. Disconnected the four ribbon cables to the T-CON and reseated them and at first i got half a screen of fuzz and half normal. Reseated again and it did what it did before.

Would I be able to confirm it’s a T-CON issue at this stage and maybe scrounge for parts?

Another few photos for reference. The bottom left corner is darker than the rest of the screen. It still works fine however just very dark and a reddish tint in that corner. You can see a reddish bleed thing in on the left of the panel and IT GOES AWAY when I go into the menu settings, despite still being a black background for that corner - otherwise it is there when video is sent through.

(The white cropped box contained my name so that's why it's in photo 2)

Now that it has warmed up, the images aren't doubling up. Looks all fine and well. However, The left side is darker and redder than the right side??? Squeezing and tapping the panel made no difference at any stage when I tried earlier.

EDIT: Attached some photos. One at cold start up, one at twenty minutes in when it's toasty warm. It's cold weather here in Australia (winter).

  • Saving a Sony Bravia KDL-46X3100 (HELP PLEASE)

    Hi Everyone,

Going around some garbage that's been thrown out in my neighbourhood and I stumbled across a Sony Bravia 46" KDL-46X3100 in good condition. It was clean and seemed to have been wall mounted all its life judging by the missing stand and screw mounts on the rear.

Took it home and plugged it in... seems to turn on, but I get a fuzzy/double image thing going on.

I dunno if it's the panel or an IC of some sort that's gone bad? I heard something called T-CON and solder joint when I put it into google.

    Anyone able to guide...

  • Re: Windows 10 UPDATE NIGHTMARE

Today has been wonderful. My photo editing rig in the shop runs Windows 10. Today it decided it didn't want to boot - kept going to "automatic repair" and giving blank screens. I decided to investigate further and took out all the unnecessary stuff such as the four hard drives and USB stuff. It booted again and was fast - prior days it had been slow to boot and locked up at boot at times.

It decided not to read any of the other SATA hard drives except for the SSD with Windows on it. In BIOS, the computer read all the Hard drives...

  • Re: BUDGET 4K graphics cards

Update: My brother will be upgrading his graphics card soon, so he will give me his card. It supports 4k. I don't know the model but it is a recent gaming card from Nvidia.

Now I have another question. If I run Windows 7, will I have scaling issues on a 43" display in terms of text etc?

Just one 43" display. I guess there's a bit of confusion with my post. I will be getting rid of my 3x displays and replacing it with ONE large 43" 4k display. So I just need to drive ONE monitor at 4K....

So I did find some cards from nvidia that might work? 1030, 1050 and I think 730Ti support 4K? I also believe HDMI 2.0 supports 4k? Can someone confirm? Thanks!
