  • Re: Abit BP6 worth keeping?

    Bump...

Decided to sell it, hit me up if you're interested in the motherboard and 2 cpus.

    Re: Firefox 3

FF will start where you left off (in start options).

I like FF best, FF2 was getting porky with memory usage. Hope it'll be better. That was the original point to FF, lean and fast, but it went wrong somewhere. I still keep a copy of 1.07 around for those really slow P2 and P3s.

  • Re: P5K EPU continual BSOD

did you run a burn-in test using Memtest 86+?
I make sure I do this on all builds and upgrades and overclocks.
And I do mean allowing it to run for at least 12 hrs.

  • Re: Using Zeners to Reduce Fan Speed

PSUs are pretty well regulated. Simple series resistance is all you really need.
KISS principle is best here. IMO, 50 Ohm resistors are a good start for voltage drops. Put them in series or parallel to get to the desire fan dB.

  • Re: Odd noise, apparently from motherboard.

Had an ECS motherboard that squealed horribly. Eventually got rid of it. Suspected inductors on that one.
I did have an SMC router which hissed out of the box. It crapped out when subjected to a brown out. The replacement unit has no hiss. And has survived a number of power issues.
Bottom line, it's not supposed to emit sound if constructed properly.

  • Re: Firefox and Broadband users, READ THIS!!

I've noticed the exact same symptoms as those you've described.
    Hmmm.

I think I'll revert to 1.5x or even 1.08 for the old systems with 256MB. Just so the systems don't bog.

  • Re: Firefox and Broadband users, READ THIS!!

Anyone else notice how each new release of Firefox seems to be getting bloated and slower?
It takes ~60MB of RAM to view a webpage, and 60MB for each open tab!
    I have only a few extensions/add-ons installed.
This isn't so much an issue on my desktop with 1G. But,
On older systems with limited RAM capacity of 256MB, it's crippling now.
(older laptops, P3, and motherboards from Intel with 512 max RAM capacity.)
    WTF?
At the moment, I have 5 tabs open, does it really need 250 MB of RAM? Come...

  • Re: What do you use for drive copying?

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8 SE.
It was a freebie download courtesy of a German PC Mag.
    Might still be available.
I don't think it works properly on WinXP MCE.

Keep in mind, some old OSes and BIOS had HDD size limitations. Make sure you check that system's BIOS date.

I think I got ya beat, don't know if it's as fast as Ti cards tho'
MSI GForce4 MX440 64 MB DVI, for $10 new, several years ago from CompGeeks.
Picked up 2 for my Athlon Xp boxes. Nice performance. But then again I don't game.

    Per, you're my hero!
    Thanks.

I also have had that annoying update that can't install, and returns time and again, even if you select not to install and not to be notified(skip).

    davmax,

Supporting 30+ home users can be a task in itself given their scope of computing knowledge, but many home users are not pushing their systems and configurations to their limits either.

My personal XP system is also very tightly controlled. XP has come a long way toward stability compared to the days before SP-2. But my rant is purely a Microsoft Windows internal shortcoming, not a third party driver or app. Not a user's poking around where he or she shouldn't be. It's simply the nature of what...

  • RANT warning: $@#$#$#@% Windows Update crap.

I HATE Windows!! Specifically the lousy Update interface.

That stupid and annoying pop-up Reminding you to restart Windows to complete the update process. Every couple minutes.
    It causes so much damage!!!!!
I lost all my running apps and a long write-up I was working on when I went to click on something and just that moment the @#$@$ pop up appears and the click get directed to its Restart button.
I'm sure this has happened to others out there.
Any of the experienced and talented members here know of a fix to kill that damn silly reminder once and for...

  • Re: Bizarre NT4 network problem

Don't routers assign IP addresses based on a set time grant?
So if the wrong IP/mask/gateway data is assigned to the NT4 box, then power cycling should only cause it to see the same box on the network and continue to give it the previous settings since the expiring time hasn't elapsed.

Windows has a nasty habit of assigning itself a default IP if DHCP is selected and it doesn't get an IP in a reasonable amount of time during boot.
255.0.0.0 sounds familiar as the mask.

If you manually set IP for the NT4...

    Re: AMD or Intel??....

The 570 SLI chipset isn't optimal if you have dual SLI video card gaming in mind.
I believe the 16 PCIe pathways are split 8 each in SLI mode, not 16 and 16.
Fine if you're only going to use 1 video card.

    Hahaha, Simma down now!!

Relax! You misunderstood me. The 'nuts' comment is really meant to address the 'bluntness' of another poster. And the post was more directed at him. Serves me right trying to combine your cost example and his labeling post.

What you wrote was exactly why I stated those cost examples don't apply. That's what it costed at the time. As now the cost examples would be reversed.
Also, just like you've learned the hard way, never take advice from a fanboy base.

    Re: AMD or Intel??....

I don't think any of the reasons given in the example above of cost applies. You're talking about cost for a S-939 architecture, that's no longer current.
If you had to spend $460 on a cpu for your old board, then it's an isolated case.
Cost and utility is relative, you wouldn't catch me dead paying my own cash for a $460 cpu, intel or AMD.
If it was a clean slate, the cost of a X2 AM2 cpu and motherboard is no where near that price.
That's why you can't preach away and make absolute statements like the obnoxious one above claiming...

    Re: Which card??

Go with any card for the AGP than use the onboard video.
Almost all onboard video that shares memory will slow down the memory bus dramatically.

All you have to do is run some benchmarks to discover the performance hit.

Tell them tough luck, get educated.
I hate the excuse of "I don't know how."
    Then learn how.
Often they won't because they can pawn it off onto someone else to do.

    Try SyncBack, it's free.
Or simply create a batch file to copy files and possibly have it run automatically using Window's Scheduled Tasks.
