intel and capxon
not sure how this happened... but i ordered an intel board assuming that it was gonna be all fun caps... the model is BOXDQ67SWB3. it was pretty pricey too,$100+.
since when did intel start using capxon? luckily i htink it's only for the I/O circuits, but isn't capxon still bad?

Re: Get Firefox 10 on PowerPC macs
7 starts up faster no all my machines than xp.
arch starts up faster than anything else. but really, i shut down because of power bills as well. not all of us live in the middle of nowhere :P

Re: Get Firefox 10 on PowerPC macs
they cache some of the page (depending on your cache settings) in case you want to re-open the tab with CTRL+SHIFT+T. easiest thing is to turn off cache, and not use tabs :P
or in opera, i believe you can turn off tab memorization (the trash can function) somewhere in opera:config....

Re: Poor Minecraft Performance
enable DMA. if you don't want to use linux you can use xp. otherwise, ubuntu is a bit slow in general. i would make sure you have the updated radeon drivers and that you're using a faster java implementation. sometimes openjdk doesn't implement some stuff well, since oracle's not too kind with specs. you could try installing the oracle JVM and seeing how that works out.
otherwise, i'd take RD's suggestion and just do xp home.

Re: Who makes the better monitors
in general go for IPS panels.
there are really only a few panel mfg for monitors today - LG.Phillips, AU Optronics, Hannstar, Samsung/Sony.
I prefer NEC IPS displays myself, though Acers are great if you have to be cheap.

Re: ATI + WinTV2000 = FAIL
you will either need to use virtualdub or vlc, you probably don't have a choice unless you switch operating systems (a box like that should have badass mythtv support right?)

but i have no primary system... >.> i dual-boot regardless. half archlinux when working, half windows when having fun.
what would my primary OS be then?...

no love for BeOS??? :-(
Haiku is getting there, it's great.
But i do my operating systems oddly. Workstation is windows 7 stripped down all the way (so basically 2008R2 in workstation mode). Laptop (thinkpad x220) runs Arch Linux with kernel 3.2+. Arch on all my linux VPSs as well, have one Win2008R2 vps.

Re: Just pulled a record-setting drive
also machine uptime =/= hard disk uptime. we have hundreds of machines with 24/7 uptime of almost ten years now, but disks have always been failing. that's why there's raid and hot-swap. as long as less than two disks fail at a time, the system can keep running while the disks are replaced. but realistically, the mean hard disk time in a datacenter is near 4 years (since they're usually forced to be tossed by then)....

Re: Shuttle WiFi Adapters
marvell chips are really pricey, i haven't seen one in a really long time. nowadays it's all rt**** which is pretty well supported. even bcm43** and ath*** are built-in now (at least on arch kernels).
the USB ones that work well are usually bigger and uglier, if you see them, chances are it will work heh. otherwise, i'm not sure how you could do this besides building your own or spending the money on the module.

Re: Rackmounting without a rack
it looks good enough to stack on. i assume a 4U case has enough support structure. congrats on the PSU heh

Re: Shuttle WiFi Adapters
OH i see, i misread. i thought you acquired the module as well. it's old enough that it will be well-supported by linux, the problem is if you use weird encryption like wpa2 enterprise. i would just go for something like this instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166022Re: Shuttle WiFi Adapters<br /> <br... for something

Re: Shuttle WiFi Adapters
look on the module and see what chip it is. linux kernel 3+ has generally great module support (i'm not sure what kernel ubuntu 11.10 comes with). If you have a shuttle xpc case, it's great to use cause it doesn't take a pci slot or anything.
i've got an asus wifi adapter with an external antenna. since you have no extra slots, just use it. it's free.

Re: Rackmounting without a rack
if the chassis is strong enough, it should be able to support it. just put the largest ones below. otherwise, often places have surplus racks and stuff you can find on craigslist and your local university.

Re: Chmod grrrr
nice. now set up SSH securely, and use filezilla SFTP client. you'll be glad you did. puTTY and filezilla, you'll almost never need to touch your server physically. and while you're at it, make a clonezilla backup of your server, in case something happens.

Re: Chmod grrrr
it should be easier to download filezilla client on a windows box, then SSH into the ubuntu server. it will save you a lot.
mc's okay, but if you're trapped with the CLI, it won't make it much better. you might just be looking for:

Re: Upgrading Windows vista to windows 7?
yeah, multimedia blows on xp x64... none of my audio hardware has any support on it.
i'd rather use win2000 over xp, i felt XP was actually more bloated than win7 (xp's activation shit is really annoying to me, it trips everytime i OC).
on a standard workstation (old-ish hardware, ram <2GB, just for office/internet) though, i'd probably use xp 32-bit with safer-networking's sandbox.
