Thank you, all. Yes, I found a list of substitutes/equivalents of certain phased out components. While we were troubleshooting the low voltage issue, I found replacements for Q5-Q7, having the idea of changing them back then to see what would happen. There is a local electronics shop where I live and their website actually offers an available substitute part for the item searched. So finding a replacement locally isn't impossible.
I can buy some and try with Q1 first as it is easy to remove. I really hope it won't be in vain like with other unsoldered original components that turned out fine - which would leave us with no solution yet. I still hope for that "Aha!" moment. 🙂

it is safer for me to buy a few of those transistors and see if they would change anything in the faulty unit. 🙂Last edited by UserXP; 08-17-2025, 12:16 PM.Comment

OK, this is the C930 that I was able to find. Will it match for Q1, should I go with the replacement?
Also, how to check which pin is E and which is C? I know I can determine the base, it should have positive to negative probe voltage drop of ~0.7V to both C and E. There should be no flow between C and E. But how will I know which one is which?
This transistor is flat on both sides.Last edited by UserXP; Yesterday, 06:51 AM.Comment

The text marking should be on the same side.
So just put it in the same way around as the original one, with the text facing the same way.
Otherwise, you can check with the datasheet, which will tell you the pinout.
In the datasheet stj posted, you can see the pinout.
Yes the case is flat on both sides but there is a bevel edge on one side, that is how you can reference the pinout.Last edited by Agent24; Yesterday, 09:39 PM."Tantalum for the brave, Solid Aluminium for the wise, Wet Electrolytic for the adventurous"

by mikey5791Hi forum members,
In the past i have had many helpful hints from generous forum members in diagnosing and solving issue related to most of my electrical things.
Fyi, i have been keeping this unit of Sony radio cassette player as the cassette belting has worn off but the radio has been working fine before. Recently, out of a sudden i found out i can't get any radio reception at all (no signal from FM,MW or SW band) except some buzzing warp noise from the speakers.
I opened the casing inside and checked for any dry solder, burned component or loose wires...-

by CapSnap123I'm trying to fix a digital multimeter. It was working until I blew the fuse (actually the "buzz" for continuity wasn't working). I've now replaced the fuse but it's acting strangely. When I turn the dial to V, nothing happens. But when I turn to anything else, it makes a continuous, very fast clicking sound - like the piezo buzzer is trying to do something. And at each position of the dial (other than V) there are brief flashes of life on the LCD. It doesn't seem to matter if the probes are connected. I wasn't sure where to start, so I've tested most of the diodes and cleaned the...
