so do I just connect the psu board to the driver board, plug it into the wall, plug the tubes from the other monitor to the board and then wait?

No, there is high voltage present. Connect the boards and tubes and to the wall outlet LAST.

alright, so I just run it without connecting it to anything else? like a computer or anything so that it does not fall asleep?

I don't think that is necessary just to test the inverter. The Dell monitors I have experience with go into a self test feature check mode with the video cable disconnected so the back-light would be on. If it is connected to a computer that is OFF however, it will go directly into standby and no back-light.

Right, I remember seeing that self test thing (floating box). so I'll just plug it in for an hour or so and hope for the best

welp, 1 hour has passed and the backlight from my old monitor is still on (damn, this thing is bright) so I guess I just have to order new tubes and replace them?

Update:pulled both the tubes out but broke both of them, they are stuck in really tight ._.

A bit irrelevant now though you could still try.

When there are only two lamps top and bottom the lamp at the top gets all the heat from the whole monitor as well as the heat from the bottom lamp and its own heat. Consequently this causes it to wear out more quickly.
For some reason swapping the bulbs over seems to stop the protection kicking in
                so the bulbs light up.

Has anybody done a monitor with fans in it before :P

Might be a cool mod to do. (pun intended)

I'm back. I got the new tubes in and left it powered on (just the tubes plugged in) for 30 mins and it didnt shut down, so I reassembled everything and plugged it in to the wall, about a minute later, it shut off, any ideas?

                                    Check all your cables.
Was the bulb still tight ? maybe expanded and had nowhere to go!! so crack.
Try again with you old monitor lamps.
