The ones used in this radio are like this, they do rely on air as the gap but have an insulator so if you tighten the screw too much it won't short
There are a few other types listed on this site http://variable-capacitors.blogspot.ca/

I know the ones you are talking about an there is are just air caps. The plates would rust together. Even on the mica ones they can get to a point were they can not be turned. The right type of cleaner will not harm the mica. The problem comes when people use like WD 40 and car degreaser that may attack metal or what ever you may have. So it is important to get the correct contact cleaner. Usually when the cleaner is listed as a contact cleaner it will be safe, but you always have some bafone that sells crap. I have attached a picture of a large air cap. It is the same principle in a smaller package however some cars did utilize the larger ones. These would only get cob webs in them and dust until they got the smart idea of enclosing them.

      here is a smaller one

        R_J This is a interesting read http://www.iequalscdvdt.com/air-variable.html

I was looking for the old disk cap exposed to air and with the tiny mica peace that could break easy. I ran across it earlier but could not find it again.

as you can see, in those car radio, the tuning in of the station is done by moving the slugs of the tunning coils, you can see 4 of them in that tuner assembly. Fixed lot of old car radio when I was young, lot of them due to fail vibrator in the car radio with tubes!
I also had to replace lots of the rubber clutch disk.

So I am 63 years old. How long have you been repairing. Old school does things by their senses new school does things instrumentation. My experience is new school, but I have work with old timers that are old school. So have I miss read you?

Re: 64' Ford Falcon Radio Buzzing

caphair, if you're still out there, I tried to narrow down the make+year of the radio but no luck. Apparently Bendix, Motorola, Tenna, Automatic Radio, Philco were contenders.
A capacitor has 1962 date code in your pic. Nothing on the PNP output transistor p/n 8P404V as far as radio make.
Bendix was using PC boards, Motorola point-point wiring but not matching your pics. It looks real close to the 1958-1963 Motorola Volkwagen radio schematic, or the 1964 one.

For its age, the electrolytics (2caps+3 section can) are surely toast and probably need to replace a germanium transistor or two as others have mentioned. Unfortunately, they are a pain to find. To use silicon transistors needs some circuit mods to work.

I find it interesting these old car AM radios, RF section typically uses Japanese 2SA72 or 2SA73 transistors. They must have been better technology then.

                        agreed.
everything is a waste of time till they are all replaced.
those epoxy ended callins are all open now.
and i align these by ear too.its a crude radio not rocket science!

Perhaps these people can narrow down the radio type. This is their email

                            clock radio / radio lifespan?
                            by shelby5041
                            hi
ive got a modern digital clock radio approx 15yrs old

my question is how long can a clock radio or a simple radio last ss farcas operating hours?

since elec components have limited hour lifecspan i would imagine the radio or clock radio would eventually fail.

the reason i ask is because i have my clock radio on radio function 24/7 for the past 7 years and its still working fine....i leave the radio on ..never turn off past 7years...thats approx 60000 hours

it uses very little power just a few watts i would imagine that may have something...

                            by UserXP
                            Dear all,

I have this old radio clock by Sony from the early 80s, I guess. The clock display works, but is dim, the function board appears to be OK - but the radio unit shows no signs of life. It doesn't produce a single noise, crack or anything from either FM or AM band. It's like it doesn't even power up.
i opened the radio and it is full of some TRACON gray capacitors. They only have their negative strip printed, voltage and capacitace markings - no series, no temperature marking, nothing else.
My question is, do you know of this brand of capacitors and how bad are...
