Re: Vizio 60" E601I-A3 no display have sound

Brand new tcons for the e701i and e601i-a3 series tvs supplied with sharp panels are coming in defective. The 3 pole transistor is shorted even without plugging in the tcon. how can these components on the tcon possibly fail without even being tested first??

There are a heck of a lot of people having problems with these two model televisions and they're replacing the t-con board to find out the same problem exists well obviously its not the panel.

Hi, I have the same issue. I've read a lot of different posts in other websites about people having success by replacing the t-con and some didn't.
I have sound but no picture and I know the backlight works since I get the to turn on and I see a black/dark blue screen. This brings me to my question, Should I replace the T-con only, or both the T-con and the Main board? I'm asking as I would like to keep it as cheap as possible.. but I'm afraid that if I replace the T-con only and I have a defective main board it could fry my new T-con. What would you guys suggest? Thank you in advance.

freakaftr8... you probably need to up date your post... :-)

This forum has recently found that these set in what appears to be lots of cases, takes out the tcon board because of a bad panel (driver cable). Depending on if its a side driver, you may be able to save the set... BUT you need to take the back off and investigate things and check the tcon accordingly. Search this forum for some recent threads on associate vizio tvs as there has been a couple of them. They outline the "steps" involved well. If you don't do some effort, you are likely wasting your money blindly buying and replacing a tcon card or otherwise.

I'm sorry as I'm not good with these kind of things, but I'm a fast learner.
What tools would I need to check the boards to make sure they work correctly? Thank you.

All you really need is a DVM a digital ohm meter or an analog either way but we preferred digital and a soldering iron and some really good skills. Will provide the rest of the information first of all you need to make sure that you're getting 12 volts to your tcon board with a voltmeter.

I have not seen too many cases where there were problems with the main boards on these models yet but they do have an inherent defect with the panel itself which if you read up on this model under a search under this forum you will see the different various fixes that we have accomplished and how to achieve the point where you can test different suspect items to get to this point where you need to modify the panel

Not too sure about the 60 inch version but here is my Repair for the 70 inch. Read up on this and you'll get an idea of what to look for

I have not seen an instance where these TVs fried the tcon board from a bad main board. Do some research on the 3-pin transistor labeled coxa to see if that is shorted

Re: Vizio 60" E601I-A3 no display have sound

I read the thread about the 70 inch TV (ok maybe not the whole thread :-))

I have a 60" and in my case it doesn't seem to be the same problem (defective panel). Or maybe it is but intermittently.

I repaired that TV once by replacing the T-CON a couple of months ago.

It failed again, I read about the transistor with the marking COXA. Google returns N-channel FET AO3460. Replaced it with something beefier: SI2308BD and it works ... for now.

I'll post back when (if) it fails again.

With what I measured it shouldn't fail (even the old one shouldn't have failed) See attached VDS, VGS and thermal.

                  @paulstef

How's it holding up man? I'm new to this thread but i've been reading closely and it seems between replacing that transistor or slapping on an entire updated ZG series TCON board that would solve my problem..? I like your idea about putting in a beefier transistor. Can we confirm that the one you went with will suffice? I'm working on a 60" model btw, i read somewhere that peeling off the driver tab on one side will not remedy the problem here because well, there are no side driver tabs on the 60?

Hi Paulstef. I replaced the transistor on the t-con with a previously suggested one that was rated at 45V/2A instead (RTR020N05TL). I power on the TV and the and I get the Vizio logo but then it turns orange on the screen and there are 3 horizontal lines that appear and then the picture goes blank. My guess is the transistor is not beefy enough. Do you think the 60V one you suggested could potentially do the trick? I have a ZC board and was thinking of ordering a ZG board but I figure I will need to replace the transistor on that too. So long story short, order a couple 60V ones first and give them a shot? Thanks!

Re: Vizio 60" E601I-A3 no display have sound

This is an interesting thread. I have had the same issue (later on) with sound but no picture, HOWEVER, that wasn't my initial problem - my intital issue was the power just suddenly dropped, would not power on, after removing the back cover on the TV to expose the boards, I noticed the main board looked like it had a blown inductor and of course the main power supply board had the primary fuse blown, I replaced that then ordered a replacement main board the e601i-a3 board. (I metered correct voltages from the primary power board so I ruled that out right away) I theorize the initial problem must have been a sort of power surge, I do have a surge protector, but it's old.

I initially had the tv for about 2 years btw with no issues, so after I got the replacement e601-a3 main board the tv powered up as normal and worked flawlessly for another 8 months or so (give or take) then started having this other issue, the one stated here, sound but no picture, had power and sound, just no picture.

Soooo... I thereafter ended up replacing 4 more e601-a3 main boards before I got to this last one. They would each work for a short while then the picture would go out, sound, power, but no picture.

This last 5th board just recently started having an issue with the SOUND this time, picture, but no sound - odd, since some research I did states that the main board is the supposed issue with no sound...

The replacement boards I purchased were on fleabay of course, stated to "have been pulled from a working vizio" and perhaps at one point in time there were... but..

I researched and asked one of the ebay sellers of the tcon Repair Kit RUNTK5261TP E601i-A3 under the seller name "zemtronix" - I took the liberty of inquiring with the seller regarding the tcon repair kit and asked his/her opinion about what my most recent issue could be with the picture but no sound could be and this was his response:

"The problem with your TV (and 100's of others that have the same T-con board) is that the ribbon cables get shorted on the side of the panel (screen) and that causes the damage to T-con board. Search https://www.badcaps.net/forum/ for solution for that to prevent further burnout of T-con boards."

I'm a bit skeptical with this answer, as replacing the main board shouldn't be able to correct the problem if it is the t-con board that is causing the issue, but an expert opinion is always welcome. I did research on this forum as the seller instructed but not been able to find specifics on this issue.

UPDATE: today, 7-31-16 I powered the TV back up after also unplugging the speaker wires from the main board and simply plugging back in, the TV powered on and the sound came back! I was shocked, however the victory was somewhat short lived, as it went back out after 20-30 mins, I am theorizing that the main board may be "overheating" due to a possible internal short issue as stated from the seller in the t-con board, just for giggles I put back in one of the original main e601-a3 boards (the 3rd or 4th one that just had sound but no picture) and WOW, the picture and sound BOTH came back on a board that previously failed on picture, something def strange is going on here so I'm thinking of trying the t-con repair kit and/or replacing the t-con board entirely.

Like I said replacing the main board shouldn't be able to fix the problem if it is indeed the t-con, so experts please feel free to chime in...

I replaced the transistor with the 60V one and the TV was working great for a couple weeks. I say was because a new problem has started. The set will power on and seem fine. All of a sudden the picture will freeze, a loud noise will come from the speakers and then the picture will go blank. Eventually the white "ON" LED then fades out. Could this be a power issue or more of a main board issue?

                              Any ideas?

Ive been reading on the 70" version with defective side tabs
Just want some advice before start ripping of tabs

Tested the transister black lead on center pin, red on left =no reading, red on right pin -07.. Mulitmeter set to 2000k Ohm..

First Pic= Just left flex ribbon disconnected

Second Pic= Just right flex ribbon disconnected

Third Pic= Flex cable at bottom of screen

Which side would I take the side tabs off?
                                OR
Would just replacing the transistor take care of the problem all together?

I repaired one recently and wonder if it was a poor connections in the LVDS cable that took out the first tcon... Not sure of it but I was getting all sorts of picture quality issues after replacing it until I cleaned the connection at the main board and even then I had to play with the connection.

Ive repaired a 70" model by removing the tabs from the bad side.

its the same kind of issue, "typically", assuming the same type of "failure observations".
