Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
This one (in the red circle) is really likely the same thing.
This cheap PSU from my country is said to be just 15$ for 550w
(Sorry for piss-poop-poor image quality, I just had a quick edit to avoid the copyright issues.)

What about good ol' transformer with some added circuitry? That would be heavy enoughLeave a comment:

Nah, just encase a small power strip, and 3 little "wall warts" in it, 12v, 5v, 3,3v, in an ATX PSU case...Leave a comment:

The solution? Stop making EVERYTHING in China!!! Oh wait, that would mean people pay higher prices, we can't deprive them of their cheap tat!Leave a comment:

Yes. Unfortunately, they forgot to add fake input filteringLeave a comment:

This is going too far, what would be the next thing?? a PSU case without any circuitry with a piece of lead to make it heavier??Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
The EU should really test samples at random to check the PFC readings.. then they'd find the fakery.Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
No, I mean the header on the PC board. Is there any circuitry actually connected to that? Is it just not connected, or both pins tied to ground, or what?Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
That blue wire enters the dummy PFC bobbin loops around and comes back out.
Just to trick the casual observer so it appears to meet the EU requirement and has some form of PFC.
One plug into a Kill A Watt set to the PFC function would expose it though.Last edited by Krankshaft; 07-31-2011, 12:30 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
I stand corrected that PSU doesn't have Passive PFC. That is the EMI filter.
I figured a mid range PSU that wasn't cheap mind you bought in 2006 would have it.Last edited by Krankshaft; 07-31-2011, 12:27 PM.Leave a comment:

There's a header on the board for that blue wire, but is that header connected to anything?Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
That is strange. Hmm. Yeah every ppfc psu I have has a big inductor bolted to the case including a few deltas.Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
That choke you have there in your Antec isn't a passive PFC choke, it's just a component of the EMI filter.Leave a comment:

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
Try every PSU I have here is a link to my Antec Smartpower:
Check out the third pic that's the input. A pretty common sight on a PSU that isn't a gutless wonder. An onboard choke and inductors only no external e coil choke.

Check post 8 for another pic.
I've never seen one in any passive PFC supply I've opened.
I have seen them constantly in pics on supplies marketed for 220 volts though.
I'm thinking stricter regulations for line noise in the EU requires a bigger choke.Last edited by Krankshaft; 07-31-2011, 09:21 AM.Leave a comment:

by NevilletHi All,
I'm looking at upgrading my load resistors for power amplifier diagnostics and have a few questions:
1. is it possible to use e.g. a kettle element as a load?
and at the other end of the financial spectrum..
2. Electronic loads - would they work?
3. What's the gold standard method?
Many thanks.-

by sknepscheldHi
I am busy repairing a Garmin Echo 101 device that has a blown IC.
The only information on the IC is IV7DF. (See attached foto)
I am not able to find this component or any replacement.
Are you perhaps able to assist me to identify the component or a possible replacement?

by Pentium4So I want to swap another PSU into this unique case that has had the original guts fail. The PSU case was designed for a PPFC coil, so I'd like to incorporate it into the drop in.
So I really can't remember. Can't you just drop in the PPFC coil? Most PCBs are labeled for them but I really can't remember. There isn't any circuitry that needs to be added? The one in question has a polypropylene capacitor attached to it:
Would I just install this where the circled jumper is?
How much does the coil improve the PFC %, realistically?... -
by HittoI'm planning to remove and bypass the passive PFC transformer/coil on an ATX power supply.
I don't care about reduced efficiency. I'm worried, howewer, about any problem in terms of increased ripple in the primary rail.
Does the removal of the passive PFC has negligible downsides in terms of increased ripple?
Thank you. - Loading...
