    I couldn't find any in any of mine that were visible. Surprisingly, I usually just see the two slots in between the two big caps. I ended up buying some of these:


    I picked these because I thought that you want the Max DC voltage rating to be 200V so that it protects the main caps? Do you think these are still going to be suitable for non-PFC PSUs where it has two slots between the big caps?


    They are. However, the fan control thermistor is just sitting on the board in the middle...

    Hey Pete, good to see you!

    The KYB cap is actually 10x30 so it would fit in the same footprint. But it has an ESR of 0.027Ω versus the Chun Shing 1000uF 16V 10x20 cap has an ESR of 0.06Ω which is quite a drop. I would like to keep the controller happy so it doesn't create more ripple. So I think the Rubycon YXJ 10x16 @ 0.062Ω is probably the best bet with the PI filter.

    The PI filter is coming from another half bridge unit on the same rail, do you think this is the most likely outcome...

    I've seen a few but they are rarely actually branded Solytech. One was actually an Allied, a really nice one. I recapped it 10 years ago and it's still going! With the original YC PFC cap too.


    What do you think was causing the significant increase in power?

    I understand where you're coming from. However, I want to improve it if I can. I have some time for this and I do care about my equipment as well as enjoy working on and improving hardware. Especially since I don't have access to lots of free equipment like I used to.

    This is for one of my personal computers but I'd still rather just work on it once and forget it, like so many of my projects in the past.

  • LC Power LC420H-12-US (office series) rebuild

    I'm sure some of you are familiar with this brand who normally is in Europe. I want to use this in a very low powered system. The PSU in this system now is way overpowered and I want to use it for something else.

    This system at its peak uses a mere 75W so this thing will be fine I believe. However, I do think it needs some modifications.

    Unfortunately I got rid of most of my power supplies a few years back so I hunted some on eBay. Of course I could have got some with already good caps but what's the fun in that when you can save unsuspecting victims on eBay from buying something that could cause them problems?

    I'm also aware that Solytech is capable of making a decent unit, minus their caps. This one is on the 80 Plus website as being able to do its full wattage.

    So I finally got around to this thing!



    Hard wired it to 115AC.

    I decided to keep the 12 rectifier.

    I removed as much glue as I could, or at least where it could cause a short.

    I replaced the Jenpo caps even though they tested good on ESR (but one step down in capacitance, they're actually 820uF.) They both read 0.11Ω. Something about them not getting any power for 12 years just bothered me. I may use the Jenpo caps elsewhere, I just don't ever want to...

    Cool project! Thanks for sharing. I always liked how YoungYear use a good sized main transformer and large input caps. I've seen them use ERL-40 and even ERL-42 in some Ultra units if I remember correctly. I never liked the heatsinks they used though. Very thick but not a lot of small fins to help dissipate heat, especially with a slow spinning fan. I bet that is contributing to the heat some!



    Maybe I'm just rusty here, but how is the 3.3V independently regulated here? It looks like there is only one output toroid...

    This is the most POH I've accumulated on a SATA drive. This was a few years ago. I believe it was around 109,000 last time I checked. In perfect health! It's been with the same Pentium 4 the whole time. What an amazing system.

    I think you're right with 1c. Here's some more info: my parents live very north where it's cold so they're usually running a stove fireplace. It's probably 15 feet away but it would still regularly get up to 27C ambient temperature for hours. Another thing they did is they would push the computer as close to the wall as possible (with the exhaust pointed at the wall ) to the point where you could feel it getting very hot. I wasn't checking on it often and did turn it sideways but it could have been like...

    The POH counter there is accurate, I watched it I was referring to the Load Cycle Count. Aren't drives usually rated for 300-600k? 2.3 million load cycles is insane, I'm just surprised that the head hasn't worn out. I hate power saving features. It hasn't gone up one since changing the power settings.


    Yes this is after it ran those 39,000 hours at a point of sales system at a car dealership open 7 days a week, so it got some heavy use.

    As long as the SMART data is healthy, I leave them alone. Since a mechanical failure can technically happen to any HDD at any moment, I don't let it bother me. As long as it's backed up, I don't mind even running important data on a high POH disk. I have some drives with over 50,000 POH running critical stuff. As long as they stay cool and back up, I don't worry. I like to use things to their full life. I work from home so I can usually get things back up and running quick in case something happens.

    Interesting, I've had one of these before but the design was quite different. Mine had a switch on the back. As long as it was plugged into the wall, the switch would always turn it on.

    How many A are the parallel diodes rated for? Looks a little sketchy for 450W but all 12V would help with efficiency and the output starting at such a high voltage is a promising sign. I bet the fans would be annoying as hell if it could do 450W lol. Then it would turn the glue conductive and it would explode anyways!

    Thank you, sir. I do 100% plan on doing a full refurbish but it's getting harder as I get older. Especially when there are such annoying tasks as removing conductive glue. Recapping (especially modular PSUs) is a task enough and the glue just makes it feel like much more of a task.

    The box is bittersweet for me. It's cool and interesting to see but it also makes me sad because I miss when computers were more simple.
