Re: What's *your* latest mess-up?
Last messed-up:
While testing a computer while it's on, a screw fell on the motherboard. Motherboard and memory fried.

Re: wikipedia motherboard article
FixedI added that on the description, maybe I will move it into the reliability section.
Moved to the reliability section and changed the description, I hope it wouldn't be reverted lolLast edited by Derek23; 08-30-2011, 02:07 AM.

Re: LED lamps a bit lit when switched off
Many thanks Delaware
You're correct, there is ~35V in my case, and it fluctuates a bit!

Re: LED lamps a bit lit when switched off
No, it's a normal switch (well those who you can control the lamps with 2 switches I don't remember the name currently).
Then does this have a fix? It's annoying and maybe bad for the lamps...

Many thanks, then I'll make sure the switch cuts the live!

LED lamps a bit lit when switched off
We replaced the old halogen lamps with LED ones supplied with line voltage (230V), older ones had a 230 to 12V transformer, and when they are switched off they are still lit although very dim, also I have replaced a incandescent bulb with a CFL in my room and when switched off it blinks a bit each second during an hour then stops, this happens in all the rooms they are installed with different switches, anyone knows why? I don't understand how current can flow with the switches off.
Many thanks

Re: Electrostatics
I remember now that long time ago I zapped the PC case with a high ESD (I even saw and heard the spark) when I was about to open it, the PC was unplugged at the time, could the ESD reach the motherboard through the case? The PC is working fine at the time being.
Thanks

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
LOL that reminds me those infamous fake cache chips on some motherboards!...

Many thanks! I am convinced now, I will test this when the new monitor arrives

Re: Passive PFC - The HongKongFlyApart way
This is going too far, what would be the next thing?? a PSU case without any circuitry with a piece of lead to make it heavier??

Re: Mitsubishi Projection TV Loses Sync
I had that problem on some CRT TVs and were caused by bad caps (with leakage but looking fine even if they aren't lytics) on horizontal section on TV (those near the flyback and h transistor).

Multimonitor question
I want to add a second monitor to my PC, I currently have a 17" 4:3 (1280x1024) one, and I will buy a 18.5" 16:9 (1366x768) one (I can't find a monitor with same specs as the current and I can't afford 2 monitors)
One of them is connected with DVI and the other one is VGA,
Could I configure the video card (an HD5450) so both of them would use they respective native resolution or I would be condemned to view a distorted and blurred image on one of the monitors?
Because with a laptop with an HD5470, if I connect a 4:3 external monitor, it shows...

Re: For the CRT monitor freaks - highest resolution you ran on your tube?
Well it was 0.24 and looked fine in that resolution, xD very sharp image, (though very small text) and further shrinking of the screen due to aspect ratio of 16:9 (this monitor was 4:3), having to reduce height.
About the 15", yes, it was shadow mask and text looked blurry, though images were more or less fine!...

Re: For the CRT monitor freaks - highest resolution you ran on your tube?
Really i used it normally on 800x600 because of the refresh rate 85 Hz, in 1024x768 it was 65 Hz and cause me headaches. I only changed to 1024x768 when a web page is badly seen on the previous resolution or a program requested to have a higher resolution
in my 17" one I normally set it on 1152x864@85Hz (unless i see photos or videos, in these cases I set on its max res 1600x1200@65Hz) xD...

Re: For the CRT monitor freaks - highest resolution you ran on your tube?
Yeah I used the Nvidia Custom resolution thing, one day I was bored and played to get the highest res before the monitor shut down and I got 1920x1078@50 Hz with the 15" thing, I tested only for seconds because the 50Hz flickering was very nasty lol, however with the 17" I could use it for view high res photos or videos because 60Hz was more tolerable
that 14" have a 800x600 max res? I use that on the 15" because the CRT tube was worn or something...Last edited by Derek23; 07-25-2011, 05:32 AM.

Re: For the CRT monitor freaks - highest resolution you ran on your tube?
I had in the past a CTX PR705F 17" W/trinitron tube, its max res was 1600x1200@65Hz though I pushed it in 1920x1080@60 Hz, and the text was still sharp (after adjusting focus/screen pots on flyback) despite being too small and having to reduce height to keep aspect ratio, great brightness and contrast and 0 ms response time. It developed some flyback leaks that ends burning it, the H transistor, I couldn't replace them so I thrown it away, I miss it, it was a great monitor despite it took too much space...Last edited by Derek23; 07-25-2011, 04:58 AM.

Re: Electrostatics
Totally true... Once (before I know all these stuff about ESD) I put a video card (9500gt) on a plastic shopping bag, touched it a lot without discharging, placed on a bed, and it still worked fine....

Re: IBM Thinkvision L170P now distorts image intermittently
Happened again, 10 min after turning it on... Indeed, it's like the image is about to roll vertically, including the OSD....
Sorry I can't post pictures, I don't have a digital camera, only my netbook's webcam and I can't focus properly on the boards..
Should I recap the PSU anyways? Can this be caused by bad caps? (thought all these Capxons look ok)
Many thanks

Re: Electrostatics
lol I don't have a grounded ESD table (I work on a wooden one) and I don't have a ESD wrist strap nor ESD special mat, I work with the PC plugged in (with the surge suppressor switch off, of course) so the case is grounded and touching the no painted zones often to discharge ESD, including when opening the bags....Last edited by Derek23; 07-24-2011, 08:26 AM.
