Is this a good solder connection?

    Hey guys,

I have been arguing with some guy on another forum (MP3 player related forum) about how he soldered the internal battery to the mainboard. He defends his solder connection is good, though I say it needs to be redone.

Here's the picture of his work (with his solder joints circled in red):

Is his solder connection good or bad?

      looks like shit.
wont be funny if one comes loose and shorts the lipo battery to the left.

I've seen better soldering done by a 5 year old with a red hot poker.

Looks like he didn't twist and tin the wires before tacking them to the board. He didn't even put something ON them to insulate them after a screwy solder joint.

Just compare it to the other end of the wire!

Re: Is this a good solder connection?

That guy replied saying more that his connection is a good connection due to the charger's green light turning on when he plugs it in.

"the battery is full, i tastet it. also with the enclosed power adapter i put it on more hours. that the connection is good i see on the adapter because the light is green. if the connection is bad ( i tried this!!!!) the power adapter light is black! so i am sure, the solder connection is good enough to work. it is not perfect i know but to start the mp3 player it must be ok. i solder it a last time, still same problem. black screen, no usb connection"

                  yeah its great!
if like walking a tight rope blind folded between 2 500 story buildings at night while a hurricane blowing

if you could get arresting for using a soldering iron he'd be a prime candidate

I know we all got to learn but if you want a good example of what "NOT" to do that would be it.

as above wire not twisted too long and very good possibility of shorts, joints would be dicky at best...
it might work but its terrible solder job

                  There's no argument it sucks.

                  Cheers

good idea. make him demonstrate some AC circuit soldering so we dont have to wait too long

Re: Is this a good solder connection?

he's leaving the nude portion of the wires too long so he's risking the red wire connecting where it shouldn't.
that aside, i don't think anybody can tell you wether this is good or bad joint based on this photo. this photo is crap.
you need a photo from the side and more zoomed-in to be able to tell that.
like this, it may or may not be good connection. it's impossible to say.

doesn't really look like good soldering, but even first time solderer can produce a good joint. it's a matter of chance, sure, but above image tells me nothing as it's all wrong angle.

you asked about the connection, not about soldering skills, right?
in that case one would need better photo to judge.
that his skills are not too good is visible from this photo, yeah.

                        here's the angle and zoom level that is needed when taking such pix;

Re: Is this a good solder connection?

I think parts of the joint would be making good contact solder wise like a strand here or there and thats why it may be working without issue (so far)

but its just a really really bad job all round!

Re: Is this a good solder connection?

Looks like a heat shunt could have been handy to stop the sleeve from burning, perhaps could have used solder on the joint instead of just putting wires to the almost solderless joint and pressing them down with the iron. I wonder how much force it'll take to pull off those wires or how much voltage it takes for the fraying parts to make little electric arcs.

Ashame the wire looks decent quality. A waste of good wire.
