    "all apc i know of must have a battery to do anything." Including the communication with the PC if the power switch is off? I know the charger is an always on no matter the power switch is on or off

      With the 750watt one I have (got for $1 at a garage sale) it will run without a battery but just won't provide anything beyond surge protection as expected. It also won't shutup with incessant beeping without a battery either unless configured to not do so using the 10pin data cable. Thankfully batteries are relatively cheap in comparison to a whole unit.
