Waait a second... Chinese ESR meter on eBay for $20?
That meter looks like a clone of Karl-Heinz Kubbeler AVR Mega328 tester. "The accuracy of the ESR measurement is not very high by different reasons"
        More about it here http://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgea...ecker-project/

I know the Anatek Blue ESR goes for ~$100 (kinda expensive), but it does in-circuit testing and uses higher test currents 50mA/150kHz and seems proven by many people.
I was going to order one, unless Badcaps wants to make their own...

          Re: Bob Parker ESR Meters

the chinese / german one may be less accurate, but it is good enough for a good/bad test and it does other things.

i dont believe in "in-circuit" testing because of parallel loads.

            Re: Bob Parker ESR Meters

            I got my ESR-meter to work !

I brought a kit in Portugal and what a mess - the kit was announced as a MK2 and the MK2 manual was to download from the website.

When I got the kit it was NOT a MK2 - mounted in a crappy box with crappy banana bushings, no description on how to assamble the kit - you just have to go by the MK2 manual, no explanation on the changed component values and even wrong values compared to the wrong manual - a mess I think.

The seller was very nice to help with the problems, so it turned out well in the end - except for the mounting box - it's too crappy.

I would advice the seller to get more organized.

              Hi all!
I have an ESR EVB v1.1 since more than 10 years, always worked fine.
Now it is not working properly.
With a new 9V battery, I do the reset procedure and displays shows the normal reading "00". Than when measuring capacitors, it shows values as "40", "33", "25", randomly.
              Have you any idea?!

              Kind regards.

                Re: Bob Parker ESR Meters

The Blue ESR meter does show fault codes for many problems:
                F0- Q11 not discharging Q10.
                F1- C10 charging too fast.
F2- C10 charging too slow or not at all.
                F3- Pulse amplifier bias Q8-C <0.44V
                F4- Pulse amplifier bias Q8-C >1V
F5- Test current source is always on
F6- Pulse amplifier has no output
                F7- Q3 not sourcing current
                F8- Q4 not sourcing current
                F9- Q5 not sourcing current
                FA- Q6 not switching on.

Does the meter zero? You short the leads and press the button.
If the readings are not steady, then check the test leads have a good connection, no oxide.

You said yours is over 10 years old, have you checked for dry solder joints?

Is it possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue meter?
                    by chth96
I read EBOOK of Testing Electronic Component and found that

"In order to test the small blue resin coated ceramic disk capacitor which has 104 50v specification,it is possible to test this small ceramic capacitor by making use of analogue meter.
Set to times 10Kohm that has 12v output from the probe to check disorder of ceramic capacitor.
It is not uncommon that testing result of digital capacitance meter is okay,But It show shorted reading when you check it with analogue meter."

Is it really possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue...

Magnum IA.100 Amplifier Switches on, No Output, Possible Input Side fault?
                    by flibidy
I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.

The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.

Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.

lowest current galvanometer/analog meter (passively powered!)
                    by eccerr0r
Most analog meters are actually current driven - a current is needed to deflect the pointer full scale. They can be lots of different values. There are ones that can take several amperes to swing the pointer as they have internal shunts.

On the other hand there are many that are rated in microamps for the intent that they draw as little power as possible from the devices under test. Some are 1mA, 500µA, 200µA, 100µA, and the ubiquitous 50µA frequently used in analog VOMs. There are even 20, 25, 30 µA and even down to 10µA. Been collecting a bunch of different ratings and...

How Can I test PWM DM0365R?
                    by chth96
                    Hello
I have power adaptor(220V/input, 12V 1.2A/output) which has symptom of fluctuating output DC voltage between 11.5V-12.2V.
So I opened its plastic case and when switched it on, I heard constant tik tik sound from inside its PCB.
I measured DC voltage between negative and positive pin of the largest capacitor(400v 10uf) and it was measured contant 300V.
I also measured ESR value of all capacitors and I noticed that one of capacitor(KMG 16v 470uf), which located in the secondary side, have high ESR value(10 ohm),So I replaced it with same specification NXH capacitor....

test active pfc power with lamp test
                    by khelane
                    Hello
I have a big problem and that is that in some cases when repairing active pfc power supplies I cannot work with a test lamp. I can only get help with 5 volts standby and for starting and starting I have to work without a lamp and this way there is a possibility of parts exploding and other parts being added.
Sometimes with a multimeter test the problems can be reduced to some extent, but I had several cases that had to be tested on and online and recently two varistors exploded. They had terrible resistance because the power supplies were over 800 watts.
                    Is there a way...
