Exactly. I did this for the antivirus and firewall as well. Don't need a firewall since my router has a built in hardware one. Don't really need an anti-virus either since I only visit a handful of websites (scanning with Malwarebytes once every few months works just fine).

Not sure about Windows 7, but in XP when you say you want Automatic Updates off, they do become turned off. Furthermore, you can turn off even the service for Automatic Updates from Computer Management in Administrative Tools. Saves a few extra KB of RAM .

As far as Windows Genuine Advantage, that stuff is easy to remove. It is actually installed on a few of my computers, though, but I left it alone as it doesn't really bother me. It starts with Windows on every other boot or so and is usually gone from memory before I can even open Task Manager, so it's not really taking any resources. If WAT is like this as well, I don't see what's the big deal. So what, some process calls home once every 90 days, who cares. Yeah, I don't like this "you're a thief until we verify that you're not" crap either, but I think there are many other things worse that that.

      Re: windoze-7

you can turn it off for windows 7 too. when you first set windows 7 up, the option to turn it off is not there, but there is a option to set the option later. after windows is set up, then you can turn it off. just go to windows update under the start --> all programs and when the screen comes up, it will say something about turning it on or something like that. click to change the settings and it can be turned off from there. then you can do the updates by choice of what you want..

My point exactly. I don't see why MS can not just make a more reasonable price scheme. make it so you get update for 50, OEM for 70, and retail for $100. Then people would be more willing to purchase windows. But look at the restrictions they even put on it. By EULA, OEM can only be used on new builds and not be bought for yourself by the new EULA for 7. What is the harm of selling the OEM version and letting people buy it for their own PC.

The only difference between OEM and retail is price and retail is supported by MS if you have a problem. OEM you have to go the the person that built the PC. If they can sell OEM licenses to big companies like HP and compaq for what, 15 or 20 dollars each, then why cant they sell an OEM version the the home user for $70? I know i wouldnt compalin half as much about their prices if they did and Ill bet that sales would about double and the hacked versions would drop by 70% (25% would probably be china and 5% the rest of the world.)

There is a double arrow next the the icons by the clcok. click it and all the hidden icons will appear.

I don't trust ClamAV at all in windows. It's OK for linux since there are no linux viruses but the bigger companies such as symantec, McAfee, etc would more than likely discover and find cures for new viruses long before the group of volunteers behind Clam would. I'm not saying open source is all bad, I just don't trust it for antivirus.

I was part of the testing program for Win7,I actually quite liked it!,didn't seem as bloated as Vista/OSX10.5,but reverted to XP when I d/l Bioshock 2 from Steam and had major grief trying to make it run,XP just loaded it and I'm a happy bunny.
What I do resent with MS is the different price scales for all their SW,Mac just comes at one price, but then again the way they are starting to behave,it is probably on their to do list.

i made the switch to windows 7. i kinda have to for work purposes.. def. not as horrid of an OS as vista, its like a nice mix of XP and 'vista that works'. and as your computer is OEM activated then automatic updates are nothing to worry, i download them for security patches, theres tons of them in MS products. In the event i am non-geniune i will "re-do" my oem activation just like they do so far i have not had to 're-do' anything except for when that leaked lenovo key came out before it was actually used... but hey mistakes happen and im confident in my geniune software.

Now if some guys is black suits step at my door with a warrant for my systems then my attitude towards all this would def. change, and fast

This is a 2012 LG TV so aware full functionality of the smart functions/apps will be limited however currently unable to get the LG Smart Store.

Youtube, Netflix and LG Smart store icons briefly appear in the apps list but then automatically disappear after doing 'Initialisation of Premium' via the standard menu, I'm guessing this is due to the Country/Area group its set to is wrong for the UK.

Unable to change the country group, Area option can be changed which alters the country group but none make any difference. So believe its the country group that needs changing....

                                            Hello all!

Recently I've got a broken Macbook Air M1 2020 A2337 of eBay with a broken screen and not turning on issue.

After some tinkering I've found C5201 capacitor to be blown. This is where I hit a wall since I am a total noob in this area and have no idea what else to look for. C5201 is on one line with 3 more capacitors which visually seem ok, but beep on continuity mode and also both sides of all capacitors beep when tested with ground from the board. This to me sounds like a short, but I am not able to find what component is before the capacitors to test it....

                                            Hello all,
My first post on this forum. Looking at the "Beginner's Guide", I am in the second group even though I'd like to fix this laptop so I can donate it to someone.
I am a computer tech but very new to electronics repair iow, a total noob but in the process of learning, hence posting here. The laptop was donated to me by a client.
It is a couple of years old 15" HP Laptop, Model:15-dy5058cl, Prod ID: 8L5X9UA.

The issue: Charger is detected but doesn't charge the battery.

                                            Help a noob! Wson8 Pogo/Needle Adapters to read/Write
                                            by Doesronnieevenlift
                                            Hi all,

I had recently tried to reflash the bios on a dell latittude that has a Wson8 Chip however to no avail.

My question is, Has anyone had much success using the Pogo/Needle adapters to read and write bios without removing the chip from the main board?

I seem to struggling with the solder process wofh my reflow station and currently have 4 machines waiting for a bios mod/reflash.

For context I have just ordered a EZP2019 SPI flash so this is what I would be using alongside the Pogo Adapter.

Apologies if this is the wrong subcategory....
