• Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

I was drinking at a pub in the city part of London with a friend, came out, walked up the road to catch tube home and in a skip(UK term for dumpster) saw two 3m x 1m x 55 mm lengths of honey Maple being chucked to make way for a new bar.
Friend and I got drove back in my old VW Polo somehow got both lengths on the roof bars and drove gingerly home as the weight turned the car into the height of a go kart.
Turned the lengths into benches and table to sit 10 people.
Wood itself was worth hundreds of pounds.
That is my best and only...

• ZLH Vs MCZ.

Hi all,I've got quite a few iMac G5's to repair and am waiting delivery from here of a few hundred 1800 6.3 MCZ's for them,in the meantime I had enough Rubycon ZLH's to repair a couple of boards, they've been running for a couple of days fine,I checked the specs of both and the ZLH ripple is 1800 ish to the MCZ's 2300 ish,the rest of the specs are near identical except the ZLH has a 10000 hr life @ 105degrees celcius.
Does anyone use these caps and will I have problems later on?,client isn't in a rush to have these back,so it would be little hassle to recap once Chris's delivery arrives....

• Re: imac g5 dvd hell

Go to Ebay and buy one from there,or phone Apple, tell them the model you have and they will sell you one for not too much. You must get the standalone 10.5 or 10.4 disc if on Ebay, the original was a 2 disc affair. If you have no luck, someone here must have a copy and could mail you a disk image.

I think the problem loading 10.5 is with the custom DVD.The original is a DL,if your new optical has DL read just pop in the original and you should be good to go.You can't put 10.6 on your mac,Intel only.

• Re: another $10 mac... G4 Tower

Or,if you have another Mac going, check to see if it has D/L by going to the Apple Icon on top left, click on About this Mac,click on more info, click on Disc Burning and it will give optical properties. If it can read/write D/l,find a Firewire cable connect the two macs, restart the Mac you want to install OSX on,whilst pressing T on the keyboard, chuck in 10.5 in the other Mac.then install by choosing the HDD on the other Mac,remember to format disk to APT.Or just hook up an external optical, reboot whilst pressing alt and selecting 10.5.

• Re: The Indestructible iMac G5 - Full Poly Mod

Topcat, that's amazing,in your opinion,I've had a couple of Imac's that would chime, first two LEDS would light, but like yours,no video,I replaced all caps, but still no video, would faulty caps really influence the signal?,even on a mac with bloated caps the video would come on but with pixellated screen and curser.Great job BTW,I will be ordering the Polys when available!.

Re: windoze-7

I was part of the testing program for Win7,I actually quite liked it!,didn't seem as bloated as Vista/OSX10.5,but reverted to XP when I d/l Bioshock 2 from Steam and had major grief trying to make it run,XP just loaded it and I'm a happy bunny.
What I do resent with MS is the different price scales for all their SW,Mac just comes at one price, but then again the way they are starting to behave,it is probably on their to do list.

• Re: Dell OptiPlex GX270 - multiple bad cap failures

We have the same problem in the UK.I'm a Field Engineer servicing Government IT equipment, which, unfortunately is all Dell. All GX270's,whether NFF or SFF,GX280's included, suffer from MB failure with monotonous regularity.Generally the whole IT infrastructure is so antique due to spending cuts,it amazes me how these people manage to even log on.The paranoia about accessing user information via USB sticks or stolen HDD means their systems are crippled by background running AV scans, which, due to none prior testing, means to just boot...

• Re: Imac G5 Video/Display problems.

Thanks for the links Toasty.
Still none the wiser, tracing back from the display attachment, all roads lead to the Hynix memory chip or to the Nvidia GPU.So still up the swanny because they are both BGA.
Maybe in the next few days I'll have a senior moment and figure something out.

• Re: Imac G5 Video/Display problems.

Ok.My diagnostics,3rd LED on, LB lights up.No fans go into overdrive, sign of hardware fault.MAIN screen stays dark purple, inverter replaced no screen still.Pull mid-plane and try in known good screen and chassis. No display. This eliminates,
Screen,
Display connecter,
Inverter.
Try known good PSU,just in case it's not putting out 20/24v to power display,no display.
I'm missing something,I know,but logically power-LB-CPU-GPU-display.
What am I missing Toasty?.

• Re: Imac G5 Video/Display problems.

Hi dbridgma,
I had kind of figured it was a failing GPU,but being able to attach an external kind of threw me.There are no lines or glitches that usually point to a BGA problem and pressing down on the chip does nothing.I've got so many of these with a bad chip that I'm going to bite the bullet and get a BGA reflow system.http://blundell.co.uk/detail.php?id=irplrpc550
They also do training.I figured that to recoup my initial outlay just reballing/reflowing Imacs 1/2/3rd revision wouldn't be enough,so will do xboxes...

• Re: A Lesson In How To Recap Profesionally.

I've bought a few for £50,but those are buy it now prices, these go in a few minutes.Usually I pay 70-90 pounds,no more.If it's a 20" Imac with either processor, the recap takes about an hour on logic board, more on PSU because all the glope has to be carefully removed to access caps, total cost is about £12.00.I then bench test for 7 days using your equivalant of Remtest and a CPU torture test.
Then sell on Ebay, profit averages about 200-250 on each.I think people just buy them because they don't have a glossy screen, which is...

• Re: A Lesson In How To Recap Profesionally.

Cost £90,spares or repairs, which is fairly cheap here in the UK.The one before that with no optical, blown main caps,or RAM went for £196.00!.The board would need divine intervention to work, most pads have been burnt away, with a lot of lifted traces!.Had it worked in this state I'd sold my Ersa kit, bought a £10 iron and a blow torch.

• A Lesson In How To Recap Profesionally.

Just got this off Ebay,20" Imac G5 1.8Ghz.I don't think anyone can beat this one for sheer lack off any ability to solder. For the burnt layer I reckon he must have used a blow torch!,nice caps though. The chap is coming round tonight to give me my money back,he was totally unaware of the botch,he gave it to his "IT" guy to fix, shame he didn't look at the PSU,nearly all of the caps are blown.
On a positive note,he's using me now to do his works IMacs....

• Re: Apple iMac G5 2004 PSU gone

If LED No.2 flashes for a split second then it probably is your PSU,if you take out the PSU you may find black smears on the Imac housing. You will need a Torx No.10 security bit to open it up.
This is probably academic though as the PSU will probably stink!.
