Re: Ratdude's Main rig V2
Do I get to guess? I used to sell those. Let me guess: It's restarting itself and / or you're getting data corruption, with errors in the event viewer.
How close was I?...

Re: Ssd
I think what he may have been getting at here, was that an SSD which houses your OS will be separate from the hard drive on which you keep your stuff. So when your OS gets screwed up an you need to reinstall, your stuff is relatively safe. You could do the same thing with two normal hard drives as well.
Of course that doesn't account for other types of computer failure, so it's not really a backup, but safer than it would have otherwise been.
DVD rentals are such a wonderful thing....

Lets see...
DVD "backups", music, software, various ISO's, pictures, etc. I've got over 750GB of "stuff" on my 3TB hard drive.

It's also worth noting that the particular article you linked was from 2008. The differences should be even greater today.

Re: Ssd
Well I don't know about that. I stated what the speeds were with my 120GB version of that drive in my SSD thread. I'd hardly call that slow. Are there faster ones? Yes. But that last few percentage points just don't make sense when you figure in the cost difference.
Edit: From what I read, with SSD's, usually the larger drives are faster than the smaller ones, in the same brand / product line anyway.
Edit2: Jump on in TC! The water's fine!...Last edited by acstech; 03-13-2012, 11:45 AM.

Re: Ssd
That's why I got the 120GB one for $130...
Not that long ago, I thought pretty much the same thing. That being, too much money, not enough space. That was until I figured out how they're supposed to be used.
The idea is to load your programs and operating system on the SSD, then get a large slow mechanical hard drive for storage. It's not meant to replace a mechanical hard drive, it's meant to augment a mechanical hard drive. The specific purpose is to speed up your operating system and programs.
You're not buying...

Re: Asrock quality?
A little defensive for someone without a financial interest in it, aren't we?
In my experience, Asus and Asrock quality has been very hit and miss. I've had good Asus boards, and I've had boards that aren't worth a thin ****. I've had ones that aren't too well designed. A certain M2N-E with an overheating southbridge chip comes to mind.
I have *many* more examples. In my experience, it's about 50/50 wether you get a bad one or a good one. In my opinion, they're no better than ECS. Most of 'em work fine out of the...

Re: Anyone running SSD's yet?
You're right about the Sandforce and incompressible data.
However, if he were able to save up just a little more cash, he could get the same 120GB drive that I got, get all around faster speeds, and have lower cost per GB.Re: Anyone running SSD's yet?

Re: Asrock quality?
I'll pop in briefly to say that the Gigabyte Ultra Durable line of motherboards has been very good to me. Asus on the other hand... ugh. Don't get me started. There was always some stupid little issue.Re: Asrock quality?

Re: Anyone running SSD's yet?
Well I went ahead and got one. It's the Mushkin Chronos 120GB that I linked earlier.
I went ahead and upgraded to Fedora 16 at the same time, also doing some tweaks to minimize writes to the SSD. Basically this consisted of moving /tmp and /var/log to a temporary ram filesystem, and the browser cache off to the mechanical hard drive. The bulk of my data is on the mechanical hard drive too. It did take some creative use of symbolic links to make it the way I wanted it though.
I just went ahead and made Fedora 16 the only OS...Last edited by acstech; 03-05-2012, 04:04 PM.

Re: Anyone running SSD's yet?
Ok I ordered one. I'll see how it does. My plan is to install Windows 7 and Fedora 16 to it, then use the 3TB Seagate for mass data storage.
Is 120GB going to be enough, or would I be better off getting another one so that I have one for each OS? Another $150 is a lot to spend for what I consider to be an experiment at this time, but if it will help that much I'll do it.
Thanks to all who commented. Per, yes, I saw your comment. That's what I based my thoughts on. I also respect Pcbonez opinion. I believe, however, that...

Re: Anyone running SSD's yet?
Having read through everything so far, I believe that there may be long term issues with these drives. However, I don't see reason to think that they are unusable for their intended purpose. There have been examples posted on here of successful use of SSD's. I've seen every component in a computer fail over the years, in various ways. I see nothing other than buggy firmware that could make a modern SSD inherently more or less reliable than a normal hard drive. It's just different modes of failure.
As such, I've decided to jump in and...

Re: Anyone running SSD's yet?
It matters because some of us are trying to make an informed decision on whether or not to buy an SSD, and / or recommend them to our customers.
Hypothetical scenario:
Say I have a 3TB Seagate HD where I keep all my data, but I want some extra speed to boot the OS and run programs. That's all I want to do; install Windows 7 and Linux to it, and run programs off it. All the data will be stored on the Seagate.
How much gets written to the disk just booting it up and running typical programs? Would this be enough...

Anyone running SSD's yet?
Title says it all. I find the technology interesting, but I've heard too many horror stories to bother trying one yet. Has the technology matured enough to be as stable as a mechanical hard drive?

I vote Samsung. I've yet to replace one, under warranty or otherwise.

Re: What do you build for the average end user?
I honestly don't get too many of these. Most are established customers, that are fed up with their Emachines or similar junk.
What, specifically, I sell them varies with their needs. Usually it's some sort of:
Gigabyte UD3 type motherboard
Lots of memory of a known quality brand (It's cheap enough, load it up!)
SeaSonic PSU
Seagate HD (subject to change if they start giving me problems, so far they've been OK since 7200.12)
Sony DVD-RW
OS varies according to need.
