Re: Project : Tillamook
I actually have a "normal" Linux distro (Debian for MIPS) running in chroot on my Asus RT-N66U. Don't even need USB storage for that as this router has a built-in microSD card slot !
The CPU is too weak for anything serious, but good enough for a basic web server and BIND DNS....

Re: ShutUp10, Windows 10 "Telemetry" Silencer. Anyone used it?
I use Windows 10 Pro on my Asus G751JY. I have it set up like this:
1. Local account
2. Every privacy setting turned off.
3. Update installation set to manual (Pro allows this)
3. Start10 for Windows 7-like start menu (I HATE that Metro crap, even in start menu).
Topcat, yes there's a KMS crack available for Windows 10. I had to use it myself (even though my copy is legit), because M$ wouldn't let me activate Windows after motherboard replacement (because it was an upgrade...

Re: The 2017 Operating System Thread
Where do I start...
I have 7 on my primary PC, 10 on laptop (with Ubuntu 16.04 on dualboot), Ubuntu 16.04 on NAS, Ubuntu 14.04 on main server, Debian 7 on OpenVZ VPS.
Oh, and Android 6.0 (CM13) on my Galaxy S4 smartphone and Android 4.4 on a cheap Huawei tablet.
I also have a hybrid tablet with broken screen which has Windows and Android on dual boot.
I also have 3 raspberry pis, two running LibreELEC (Kodi), and one running OpenWRT serving as a 4G ethernet bridge.Last edited by ddscentral; 01-14-2017, 07:55 PM.

Re: How much do you hate your smartphone?
I do like and hate my Galaxy S4.
I like it because it's still a decent phone, despite it being quite old (released back in 2013).
I hate it because:
* Only 16 GB storage, only ~ 9GB of which is user accessible and which can't be expanded without using hacks and third party ROMs.
* no stock Android 6.0 (have to resort to using CM13, which isn't completely stable)

Re: Which of these machines would you favour?
Unless you plan on replacing the CPU, I would take Intel.
All AMD laptop chips I've encountered were pure crap. Haven't seen anything higher-end from AMD for a while in both desktop and laptop fronts (except for some crazily overclocked old cores, which run hot enough to double as a heater). For me AMD is mostly for budget desktop and gaming builds.
Maybe those new Zen chips will be somewhat more competitive, but I doubt it.
The only thing I like about AMD is them bundling pretty decent GPUs even with their lower-end...

Re: TR-069 remote management port.
That's the catch. Many ISPs lock-down remote management options so that users can't disable them. I remember having to hack my ISP supplied DSL router (an ADB unit) to get full admin access so I could disable all the remote management crap.
That's why I always use my own routers....Last edited by ddscentral; 11-29-2016, 12:52 PM.

Re: opinions on a icute 850w PSU
Looks like a rebadged low-end CWT with modular cables. I'm not an expert in PSUs, but I think this one should be usable for a budget build.
Definitely not an 850W though.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S7
Only Note 7 was recalled.
The first thing that comes in mind is a dead power IC. My S4 died in a similar fashion.
Your phone should still be under warranty, so the best thing to do would be to RMA it.

Re: 2 PSu's suspected of killing stuff (LP-6100D and FSP300-60BTV)
Not an expert here, but: LP-6100D is a Leadman (aka Powmax). Their PSUs are generally considered to be utter crap.
LP-6100 series was already mentioned before:

Re: How to get Win 7 on FAT32?
Try using ImageX program to unpack install.wim from Windows 7 installation DVD to CF card. That's basically what the installer does.
However, using CF card as primary HDD will be very slow, unless you got a high-end card.
It's possible to convert Windows 7 (full OS, not just PE) to USB using WinToUsb program, but pagefile won't work in such configuration.

Re: fuck HP - Inkjet printers reject low-budget cartridges
That sounds more like "the purpose of this update is to protect our revenue stream by banning the competition".
But I guess the effect will be opposite. People will just ditch HP inkjets if they can't get cheap ink. After all, the main benefit of inkjets is their cheap price.
If you wan reliability, use laser....

Re: How has your main computer evolved?
My first PC was a 300 Mhz Mendocino Celeron with 32 MB RAM and a S3 Trio 3D GPU. Built in 1998 or 1999 (don't remember exactly). This system had a couple of RAM upgrades (to 64 MB, then to 128 MB) and a HDD upgrade (a 20 GB Maxtor, which only lasted a few months) during it's lifetime.
In 2004, I got a new system, an Athlon XP 2600+, 512 MB RAM and a Radeon 9550 GPU. This system had a couple of HDD upgrades and a RAM upgrade (to 1 GB) during it's lifetime.
In 2007, I built a new PC, an Intel Q6600, 2 GB of RAM and...Last edited by ddscentral; 07-13-2016, 04:45 PM.

Re: Doctor's laptop and odd programs.
Remove Advanced System Optimizer. There should be an uninstaller available.
Systweak tools (including Advanced System Optimizer) are labeled by some AV vendors as PUA (potentially unwanted program) because they are often installed as "optional offers" when installing other programs.
This is the same tactic that toolbar/adware vendors use to get their software installed.

Re: Another Chinese junks
The interesting thing in that article is not that these PSUs are junk, but that they are essentially repackaged used PSUs.
It seems the Chinese have found a new way to make cheap power supplies.
