I know this isn't the greatest picture but this was the power supply from a Gateway 900G that wouldn't turn on. All the caps are Samxon GF series, I put a red dot on all the dead ones. I replaced ALL the caps with Panasonic FM and it's working great!

They are samxon GF series, though, so it doesn't take a heat sink to kill them.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

A lot of switching regulators datasheets mention that the capacitors should be at most about 1 cm away from the chips, to keep the trace lengths small.
So often, they can't do much about it, the capacitors simply have to be that close to the chips (whatever they are) that's mounted on heatsink.
I'd say the problem is the layout... they could have tried to move the chip a bit to the left so that the heatsink could have some fins extending horizontally and dissipate the heat better. Problem is there also has to be a bit of distance from the inverters as 700v-1400v can arc over if you're not careful.
But... it was cheaper for them to use a simple bent bar..the extrusion process for fins on heatsinks is a bit more expensive.Comment

I created an account because it seems many people here have had the exact same problem I have. My Samsung SyncMaster 216BW computer monitor (5 years old) would flicker and hum, then shut down and had to be power cycled several times to stay on. I just ordered the replacements.
The caps in the worst condition are the CapXon 820uf 25v. The short 330uf 25v in the back of the first picture (out of focus) has slight leakage as well. My computer room probably gets well over 100 deg.F in the summer if my brother and I are both gaming in here. I've had two Samsung 226BW monitors with bad CapXons in their PSUs. Monitor PSUs do tend to run warm, since they don't have any fan or much ventilation to keep them cool, so bad caps should never be used there.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

They're KZGs, a capacitor series from Chemicon. Their electrolyte is unstable (too much iron?) so they eventually fail in a few years of even moderate use, especially with added ripple and heat. KZJs also fail in a similar manner. All other series from Chemicon are good. Your images are interesting, though - KZGs often fail without bloating, but not so in your account of them.

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

Yep it's a POS allright.
I tried powering it up. It's a KILLER - not fried, but sure will fry things! I got 21V out of it unloaded according to my DMM!
I tried 21W load (car lamp) - got 16V, which is really pushing that lamp.
Then I tried a 50W load (car headlight) - got 13.2V. Not too bad but this is with the heavy load...except the circuit breaker kept tripping.
So I had to take a peek:
EIEW. Looks like a Darlington emitter follower + Zener device. Heatsinking?... -
While our PSU hall of shame thread is fun I thought It'd be fun to have a ripple hall of shame thread too
I'll go first out, it's an industrial PSU that offers +15v -15v -5v +5v rails.
However it has been mounted on a frame with DC/DC converters for producing +12v and -12v as well.
The caps for this have gone a bit high ESR
The measured ripple is around 1700mV, or 1.7v!
After recapping the ripple is gone, also note that the scale on the scope is 50mV/div instead of 500mV per div in this shot

motherboard No : 18740-1.
Problem : can't turn on.
After inspecting the motherboard, I discovered that one of the hall sensors was broken. Can't find the schematic for this board, so not sure about this SMD device number.
Does anyone know the serial number of this LID Switch? -
I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.
The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.
Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.
