Why don't you do the test that i've said?

I don't think forcing the backlights on will do anything since the tv is shutting down in protection mode. TV wont stay on long enough for me to see anything even if the backlights stay on.

I monitored the BL_ERR signal. 1.68V first plugged in. 0V when turned on. 0V when the backlights flash. 0V when the tv shuts down. Doesn't appear the shutdown is being triggered by the backlights.

Checking the firmware files again, the 46EX620 uses the same files. I'm not sure what triggers the main board to flash green and amber to accept a firmware update. If I can get it to that state again, I can try to reinstall the firmware.

Do you get any reaction if you try to update FW on the old main board?
BTW, what happen using the old board but not having HLR board connected?

The old main board appears dead though voltages are present. No light from the digital audio out connector and the activity led on the usb flash does not light up when I plug it in. No change disconnecting the HLR board.

With the new board in standby, plugging the USB will light up the activity LED on the USB and light stays on for a few minutes before going out. Not sure if it's updating or rejecting the firmware version since it's the same.

So it does not seem strange that the backlights don't come on with cable unplugged from powerboard to mainboard? my kdl4100 does, maybe someone with this series can try it to see if it does.

Protection mode is done by the main board here, you don't even need to supply that board, only the LED driver board.

in which way? By oscilloscope ? With DMM it can bee too fast to be seen.

I don't know where Diah wants to go, how can a VGA edid eprom to block the picture from appearing and end in protection?

if its not related to be eeprom.. could some one located how the firmware work on SONY. and why the RX & TX of the chip connected to VGA out pin as many other TV tracking the start script.
i never seen any brands with their service manual included software chart. same case here.. 10 blinking are sofware chart where didn't explained... easy answer for that its Sony properties and will not described by training or any documents to protect their right. so only experiment can discover it..

OP cant read any script because the chip on boards and many pins connected to GND to addressed 0 to the script bin...

would be great if some one explain to us here how the firmware chart work on this set and where are the boot section saved on this set. !!

Diah my English is bad but i think you are almost in the same way.. if i understand what you say, i don't know if you know for sure that here in this model the VGA port is connected to an UART port, if you don't know only some models has VGA with UART pins on it, but them are not the pin connected to the EDID eprom 'cause such an ultra small eprom 2kbit can't contain software, there are 2 unused pins in the VGA standard that are connected from VGA port directly to the processor (TX,RX), plus there are 2 pins for edid (SDA,SCL) to the eprom, i have done interesting research on an Hisense smart TV, accessing the Linux shell, i think i was really near to the solution to the classic "Start with logo then nothing" problem. But a problem with an unclear command of the system has ruined all the work...

Maybe try your update on a different usb drive, following the exact procedure on the sony site, seems like the tv should restart by itself at least once during update.

I just did an upgrade on a sony and the first time it did'nt work, My usb was formated FAT, I reformated to FAT32 and the upgrade worked.

Pretty sure the firmware upgraded since I got the red and amber flash. Checked the drive and it is FAT32. I am sending the board back. Searching the panel number, I can find 55EX720 main boards from China for that panel but they have a different tuner and also a compact flash slot. Mainly concerned about the incompatible tuner. Found the following upgrade guide which is more detailed plus the service/training manual in pdf. The few boards on ebay are over $100 USD. Before the upgrade, the green and yellow would flash. After the upgrade, the green flashes before going into shutdown. Again, I can't get the board to update again because I think it was successful before since the TV does turn on with a green led before shutting down. With tv in standby, the USB is accessed but doesn't appear to reinstall.

I found a reasonably priced main board for a 55EX720. From the service manual, it uses the same panel as 55EX620 but is 3D and has a higher refresh rate. But the service manual is totally different for this model and has an entry for a 10 blink code - emitter error. Flowchart says to replace the HEM2 board and possibly the tcon.

Installed the main board and it flashes on and gives a 10 blink code without a firmware update. Guess I need to try a new HEM2 board.

Update: I think I solved the mystery. My model does not have a HEM2 board which connects to the tcon board. It is an emitter board for a 3D TV, probably to connect to active sync glasses. If the firmware is configured for 3D, then it probably checks for it and gives the 10 blink error if not found.

I found a HEM2 board with a cable for a different model on ebay and ordered it. Looking at the schematic, it is just IR emitters for syncing the glasses. There is an EMI_FAIL (emitter fail) pin that is probably triggering the 10 blink code. Looks like I can just ground it to disable the error?? I'm assuming the pin has an active high pull up. Can check it tomorrow.

I confirmed grounding pin 7 EMI_FAIL on the tcon board will get rid of the 10 blink error. It needs to be grounded before the set is plugged in and needs to be grounded at all times. Since I ordered the HEM2 board, I will wait for it since I don't want to mess around with the service menu unless absolutely necessary.

Odd Sony created a non-3D model using the same panel and removed the small emitter board and also had a different bezel since the emitters need a window and lens to shine out of.

It's absolutely fool, not only the 3D panels are different and maybe more espensive in the matrix, but it needs a special powerful tcon, or pre-tcon board that elaborates the 3D, how can a tv maker give them for free? After this the original symptom was 10 blinks, but how can a tv complaint about a missing module when that module doesn't exists in that model?
