Samsung LE26r71b power supply issue. Any thoughts ?

Greetings fellows, this is my first ever post here asking for help, so please don't be too rough on me if I mess anything up )

So I've got this small Samsung TV (model LE26r71b) with a bad power supply. The power supply board is a BN96-03058a (the one in the first picture - hope you guys can see it). I've repaired several of these before and all of them had either bad caps (the irony), or the IC in the second picture gone bad (or, of course, a combination of both). The IC is a F9222L and it's a pretty obscure thing, as I couldn't find a detailed datasheet about it. I do know that's it basically two MOSFETs with a control IC built it. On all of the supplies where I've encountered this F922L so far, the problem was the classic flashing red light or a completely dead set (blown mains fuse due to one of the FETs in the F922L becoming shorted, sometimes taking out the mains rectifier with it).
Replacing the F922L fixed the issue every time, however, the symptoms on this one are quite different: the set doesn't turn on (duuh), but the power light doesn't actually flash, it sort-of FLICKERS accompanied by a rhythmic whistling sound, indicating that the PSU is trying to power on but can't...strange.
Taking some basic measurements showed that the 5VSb line is Ok....and that was about it, since applying those 5 volts to the ON/OFF pin produced the same result: whistling sound and no power to the 12V rails (inverter and main board were disconnected). I checked the diodes in the secondary side for shorts and they all reported fine. So did the KIA278R and the 33167t (both in the upper left of the board: the KIA is a 12v voltage regulator and, while not showing any shorts, I can't exactly check whether it's working or not, since the 12V rail doesn't show any sign of life (the transformer is not supplying anything to the secondary). The 33167t is a transistor and it's part of what I'd identify as a buck converter that produces the 5Vsb, so that's definitely working. Now my question is: could this defect be caused by the F922L ? It's a fairly expensive part, so I wouldn't want to get it and realize it's not that (TVs not mine btw). I know there's a whole lot of other parts that can go bad on a SMPS, but maybe someone else has had this particular issue before and can at least guide me. I must admit, I haven't fully checked the PFC section, so maybe you could give me some pointers there too. Sorry for the wall of text, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. Cheers

There's some info on a previous thread that could help you

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...ghlight=F9222L

They put the fault down to the coupling capacitor C802 in the schematic shown on their page

Can we get straight shot pictures of the bottom and top sides?

I'll post the pics tomorrow (I'm at home now and the board and camera are at work where the TV is being serviced). I'll have a look at your other ideas in the meantime.

          Pictures of BN96-03058A

Here are the pics you asked for: top and bottom. Hope they're clear enough. I have already removed the F9222L from the board, so that's why it's missing.

Posted the pics above, plus an update: I've replaced F9222L and still the same issue: flickering power LED and no 12v. Supply makes that ticking sound when I attempt to power it on. Big reservoir cap reads 324v with nothing connected to the board and the STBY pin floating (not connected to 5v standby).

NEW UPDATE: upon shorting the power on/off pin to stby 5v, I was SOMEHOW able to fire up the board (got stable 12v on the rails). It took a few tries though, so it seems like there's a bad cap/joint somewhere - I suspect one of those red caps near the F9222L, as I read somewhere else that they caused issues in another supply using this IC.

Will try replacing that and see what happens, since the circuit is pretty much the same, though the value of the cap is different.

Forgot to ask: in the schematic you were so kind to provide, do the red boxes indicate which parts I should check/replace ?

Check those little capacitors, specifically the ones that are near a heat sink.

I'll start replacing caps tomorrow (I too immediately thought of heat damage, especially since the bloody things are always strategically placed near hot parts). Hopefully one of them will cause it to fire on. Again, I'm placing my hopes on that CM802. I've also talked to a guy today who's more tech-savvy than I am and he also suggested I'd check the 5 SMD resistors on the back (RP809 through RP813) that provide the feedback for the PFC, so I'll also do that as well. Another thing he suggested was applying 5V to the 5V stand-by pin of the main board to see whether the power LED still flickers or remains stable, to rule out the possibility of a bad main board, which would be a tremendous laugh after all this trouble I went through (not to mention money spent on parts - lesson learned: CHECK THE MAIN BOARD FIRST!) )

Sadly I had to return this TV today (client didn't want to wait any longer and just said f-it). It's a shame, since I feel I was getting close. Even though it's pointless to carry on the discussion, let's at least theorize further to get some pointers for a possible future board like this, since I couldn't find the exact model anywhere on the forum and others may be facing a similar problem. So I made another discovery: I wanted to make sure it's not the main board to blame, so I powered it directly with a small 5V adapter on the 5VSb and sure enough, the red LED came on and remained stable, so that told me there's a problem with the 5v output of the supply as well ! I initially dismissed this idea, since I was reading 5v from the board, but that was with nothing connected to it - once I plugged the main board , I got the flickering LED and instability on the 5v rail AS WELL. I'm pointing my finger towards the PFC circuit not reaching the right voltage, but like I said, if I don't have the board I can't test it, so that's about it for now...thanks for your support nonetheless

I just remember a while back there was a mega thread with over a 184 posts where the PSU did weird things. We were going all over this thing, had the secondary apart, then went all over the PFC etc. It eventually boiled down to 2 bad little capacitors.

Funny thing is, this would have been an absolute easy fix, if the guy had an ESR meter and checked all the caps first! Have fun reading this... it's gonna take you a while...

I will. Thanks for digging it up. Hopefully I can use that info for other supplies as well, since they're all basically the same concept. As far as I can tell just by skimming a few posts, it's about an RCA TV.

There is tons of information like this here on badcaps. You just have to find it.

Yeah, that's what I was saying about trying to "mirror" the info from other posts about other supplies - you can't always find the exact one, that's for sure. For example now I have an LG with the same friggin' issue on hand (flickering power LED), but I won't talk about it here, since that would be...what do you guys call that ? I think hijacking ? :|
