Re: 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

Oh, almost forgot the whole reason I logged in tonight! I just replaced the dimming board with a brand new one from Samsung - no luck. No symptom changes at all. So that puts me at replacing the main board, Tconn & dimming boards as well.

Unless the boards you got were bad, the only final cause can be the LCD panel itself, which is not a repairable item.

I could see that maybe the replacement Tconn I got used from TSM was also bad, but pretty low likelihood that brainmetz also got a bad replacement Tconn board too.

Hate to say it, but I think the TV is toast - panel. (Gonna think twice before buying another Samsung.)

My power board is also humming. Not sure why.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do with the television sine we all think the panel is bad? Piece it out and sell components? Put it on craigslist (but ffor how much?) or just toss it in the trash (a dump that takes electronics)

            Thanks

Craigslist around 10~20% value of equivalent new TV.

You can always pull metal frame on the panel as last resort and push on the ribbon ics to see if pic changes... do this with a wooden dowel or wear gloves.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

                  Tom,

The original price was over 5,000...not sure what the price would be today...what price would you list it at?

                  Thanks

Price of a 50"~60" LED TV now? I don't keep up with the market.

If the capacitor is swollen, go ahead and replace it.
I have seen stranger things cause problems like this.

Anyone try to replace the capacitor and see if it works? I don't want to pay to have it replaced if it doesnt work.

                        Thanks!

I would never pay to have a capacitor replaced. It is just about the most basic soldering job you can do and a good place to start.

I have no experience with this exact model of TV, but I have had a history of replacing failed SAMYOUNG caps out of other products, especially the 1,000uf range. The bottom one that appears puffed, while it may not have failed completely, is the usual sign that I'd replace it. That said, It might be a stretch to assume that is causing your issue and if I was replacing one, I would change all similar caps. You can find a nice list of good Japanese brands to use as a replacement on this site if you want to go that route, just keep in mind that it's probably not the main cause of your issue.

I once hd a sony with a similar problem. It was a bad cap! When I looked at the 12V with a scope, it had almost 2v of ripple!. For the cost of a fewPanasonic caps from digikey, I would certainly give it a try!

Nothing new here. Was hoping someone would come on and post a miracle fix. In the mean time, I'm window shopping Panasonic plasmas for Black Friday before they're discontinued.

I've got too much time/money already invested in trying to fix this one to take another stab at replacing caps on the power board. I just have a hard time believing that would cause the symptoms being seen, but others can feel free to try replacing them and report back.

I would replace all of the caps in that area. You should be able to get Panasonic FM or FC series caps for about 10-12 dollars including shipping from digikey.

I feel comfortable enough with a soldering iron to try this but not sure where I should start or which caps to try to replace and with what replacement part #.
I didn't see anything obviously bulging or blackened when I propped it open last time but I guess I can have another look.

Add me to the list with the exact SAME problem! After google brought me to this post, I decided to open and poke around inside my TV as well. After an hour, I found that if I would move one of the four ribbons (far right) that goes from the t con to the panel, the lines would disappear but colored vertical lines would show instead. So I took out the ribbon, cleaned both ends, cleaned the connector on the t con, and switched it with the ribbon on the far left. BAM! Horizontal lines gone. Maybe the ribbons are faulty?

I also have the same swollen red cap. I'm thinking of changing it before I close up the TV and putting it back on the wall.

Badsammy - thanks for posting; interesting. Two questions.

                                          1) When you say it was the far right cable, is that while you're looking at it from the backside (the mainboard side)? Or as you're viewing the picture (power board side)?

                                          2) I'll have to go dig into mine further. I certainly pushed/wiggled those 4 cables from the Tcon to the panel several times while the set was powered up, and obviously removed the Tcon side of all 4 when I replaced the Tconn. What did you clean it with - isopropyl alcohol? Canned air? I wonder if replacement cables are available.

Let me know... and I'll go experiment on my unit w/n the next day or so, and report back.
