• Re: 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

Replacing the tcon board shouldn't affect settings. I'll let the gurus here confirm that for you.

I believe I still have the original Sammy tcon + the certified used tcon from TSM sitting here in an anti-static bag. I paid $76 for the TSM board back when I was troubleshooting this myself (post #3 & 5). I could probably be talked into sending one your way for $50 inc shipping, if interested, assuming you're in the US. I just never got around to putting them on ebay. Or if you want both boards, call it $76 and...

Anyone have anything new to add? Otherwise, I'm going to starting stripping my TV tonight -- no going back.

Understood, but there's no obvious traces on the Tconn board to the screw holes for grounding (or, at least, I don't see any), and with the 4 ribbon cables hooked up the correct way and board unmounted, the TV displayed the same picture as when it was fully mounted, 'grounded' and secured. I would hazard a guess that adequate grounding was being provided by the signal input cable from the dimmer/main board.

Are those driver boards a serviceable part? I'm a novice,...

    Yup, no problem.

Tonight, I pulled out the replacement Tconn board and put the OEM back, retested the same work from last night -- same results, same red/green/blue pattern on the left side when the right input is unhooked.

I also unscrewed the Tconn from the panel, shifted it over a few inches and wired the 2 right side Tconn outputs to the left side LCD inputs, holding the Tconn board in my hand while powering up to making sure it didn't short against the case... and it wasn't happy. Heard some faint...

Here's the results of testing Badsammy's suggestion on my unit. It's mostly bad news, but good news in that I think this confirms my earlier conclusion. I'd ask the experts to weigh in please. I'll try and keep this short & to the point.

Here's the 4 flat ribbon cables that connect between the Tconn board and LCD panel for reference. Both ends are removable, and the connector on the panel side is fairly well recessed into the metal frame.

Finding #1: When I swapped the 2 inside cables...

Badsammy - thanks for posting; interesting. Two questions.

    1) When you say it was the far right cable, is that while you're looking at it from the backside (the mainboard side)? Or as you're viewing the picture (power board side)?

    2) I'll have to go dig into mine further. I certainly pushed/wiggled those 4 cables from the Tcon to the panel several times while the set was powered up, and obviously removed the Tcon side of all 4 when I replaced the Tconn. What did you clean it with...

Nothing new here. Was hoping someone would come on and post a miracle fix. In the mean time, I'm window shopping Panasonic plasmas for Black Friday before they're discontinued.

I've got too much time/money already invested in trying to fix this one to take another stab at replacing caps on the power board. I just have a hard time believing that would cause the symptoms being seen, but others can feel free to try replacing them and report back....

I could see that maybe the replacement Tconn I got used from TSM was also bad, but pretty low likelihood that brainmetz also got a bad replacement Tconn board too.

Hate to say it, but I think the TV is toast - panel. (Gonna think twice before buying another Samsung.)

Oh, almost forgot the whole reason I logged in tonight! I just replaced the dimming board with a brand new one from Samsung - no luck. No symptom changes at all. So that puts me at replacing the main board, Tconn & dimming boards as well.

Welcome to the party. I suspected this is a systemic problem. There's many hits on Google when searching the symptoms + model #, but no definitive answers. Hopefully this post continues to help others.

FYI: I also saw that post, and tried the normalization thing... no luck.

On my unit, there's a very faint, high pitch whine/hum coming from the top center/right portion of my power board. It sounds like it's coming from the transistor rail (on the heatsinks), but the...

I just ordered a new dimming board - will report back when I get it. I think this is the last shot - must be the panel itself if the dimming board doesn't do it.

Tom: I swapped the main board out with another used (but 'tested') one. It did not resolve the problem. The symptoms remain exactly the same - nothing new, but nothing fixed either. Seems like the MB is not the issue.

Any thoughts on what to try next? Is worth swapping the dimming board to see what happens? I've wiggled all of the LVDS cables with the TV powered up trying to see if it's a bad cable, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Guessing it's either the dimming board adding interference into the...

  • Re: 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

I ordered a main board from an online store tonight that claims to have 1 in stock, new in box - $180. I figured this is the last shot and would rather go with a known good board vs. gambling with a ~$75 used one. Should be here towards the end of next week and I'll report back... hopefully this does it.

  • Re: 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

    Tom,

Yes, LED backlit with local dimming. I've attached a couple close ups of the dimming and main boards, if it helps. There's also a 4th board, a backlight inverter, at the bottom center of the TV (though I'm not suspecting it's part of the issue).

Dimming board is ~$48 new, ~$29 used.
Main board is ~$250 new, ~$100 used.

Any suggestions on which to start with probability-wise? Otherwise, I'll start with the dimming board since it's cheaper and easier to replace... unless...

  • Re: 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

Thanks Tom. As far as I can tell, it's showing the exact same symptoms as before T-con board swap. Alternating a 3 pixel horizontal grey/black line, then a 3 good pixels (the picture), then 3 pixel grey lines, 3 good pixels, etc.

I've attached a picture of the mainboard. I don't know if this is the same on all TVs, but the dimming board (i think that's what it is) is in the signal path between the main board and Tcon. Any way the dimming board could be causing issues too? Just asking based solely that it's in the...

UPDATE: No luck. I replaced the T-con board tonight (as well as it's separate cooling fan since it was looking worn) and it's still doing exactly what it was doing before.

What's the next step? LVDS cable?Re: 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

Thanks Tom. Any suggestion on where to source a new Tcon from? I can't seem to find a new one online. Or should I just go after a used/tested one? Shop Jimmy is out of stock, but I can get a used one from TSM for ~$80. I heard that Samsung won't sell one separately from the panel.

  • 2008/9 Samsung LN55A950 Displaying Horizontal Lines

Hi everyone. I just joined the forum - first post - need some help/advice. I fairly techinical/handy with electronics, but this my first venture into troubleshooting and fixing a flat panel TV.

The patient: A 2008/9 era Samsung 55" LED backlit LCD. Model: LN55A950

The issue: It's displaying black, horizontal lines across the entire screen. The lines appear to be 3 pixels wide, approximately every 1/4" uniformly down the screen. The lines are little more pronounced on the left of the screen and slightly less as you move right... but the lines run...

    Hi everyone.

I'm new to the forum. I came here through a Google search. I'm having an issue with my 5 year old Samsung TV and this appeared to be a good site to learn something, and possibly posted a thread for help.

    Thanks.
