Intex Inflatable Spa - Pump Problems

These pumps are known to fail. Usually the ceramic shaft holding the impeller breaks and if caught early enough another shaft can be fashioned from stainless or brass. I let mine go a little too long making noise and now after repair my pump has failed again and probably for good. I have not yet disassembled the unit to get to the pump to check for sure so this is a little pre-emptive.

New pumps cannot be sourced and genuine parts are not available either. I do have on hand another pump of similar size and flow rate (specs on either pump are sketchy!) and if it comes to this I will test it in system to make sure it is a suitable replacement.

    THE PROBLEM:

The old pump ran off 12v AC the new pump needs 12v DC. What is the best way to make this happen without adding an external power source ? Can I rectify 12v ac to obtain 12v dc or is that way too simple ?

if you rectify it, and smooth it, it will rise to about 15v.
that may not be an issue - it depends how hot the pump gets.

If you convert AC to DC you have to multiply your AC voltage by 1.414
      12 x 1.414 = 16.968V DC.

I don't think it is such a good idea, but I guess we need more details.

i wonder if it needs to be smoothed - never done much with dc motors.

If you were to list how many A the pump needs, you can probably find a dc-dc step down converter, there are plenty of cheap ones on ebay that can handle 30A easily. The only thing you need to do is all a beefy rectifier. Get back to us on this and let us know so we can help you further.

no, actually he may have a speed controller.
mmartell - is it variable, or just on/off??

It's on/off, controlled by a relay. I never shut off the circulation pump anyway - always leave it on, just like the pool pump.

The specs on either motor are impossible to find.

Hoping to investigate this further this coming weekend.

How about you run that DC motor with a external, variable PSU? Some Astron, Samlex or whatever...

You could grab an ammeter (unless you have a clamp style one) and then hook it up to a car battery, and see how much it draws? We're gonna need to know that in order to get a proper setup going.

Can a standard multimeter measure this without burning it up ?

only up to the limit of the meter - usually 10A
