  • Wow. My LiteOn SH-224 is now having the same problem as the LiteOn SH-222. I still have the SH-222 (I never throw anything away, and my house is ALMOST like a "hoarder house" because of it).

When I reinstalled the SH-222 and booted Linux Mint 18.3 KDE a few minutes ago, everything is fine. So this is a Windows problem, and both the SH-222 and SH-224 work fine. Maybe the Patin-Couffin layer (VSO software, it's a free download) has a problem. I will also check for an update to CDEx software, which is kind of like K3B, but for Windows.

    Since I installed the SH-224,...

  • Dan Schneider was a pedo? I had no idea. I remember someone, who I think is Dan, appearing on TV BEFORE "Head of the Class". Someone asked his character "so how's that cure coming along for childhood cancer?" and he responded harshly because his young character's cancer was in remission -- for now. Perhaps I have him confused with David Greenlee. He did some stuff from before "Beauty and the Beast" (1987, Ron Perlman, Linda Hamilton) which is where I mostly remember David Greenlee from.

So if Dan went from in front of the camera to behind it, then he...

  • Re: Laptop external keyboard?

Oh goodness. I forgot to ask the obvious question. Can I also use an external mouse?

(You can still get a WIRED mouse in the US so you don't have to worry about batteries or Linux compatibility.)

  • Laptop external keyboard?

Can I use an external keyboard with a modern (as of this post) laptop from, say, Dell?

I am worried about durability because I am a cheap, frugal person. I suspect an external keyboard would extend the life of the laptop. I have always been a desktop person, since my AMD 386DX-40, and I really don't know about laptops (though the current Dell products look like they are fanless, which eliminates a big failure point).

(Also I prefer the "clicking" "Unicomp" keyboard, which is still made an hour or two away from me in Lexington KY, using the same equipment...

  • Re: Copy-protected DVDs

Thanks !! I'll try and grab some of these other software tools, just in case I need them.

I can do that? It has been so long, I can't remember (I don't even remember if I have Lightscribe, I know I have it on several spare units). I'll look into it. I have had these problems before, where it doesn't detect that a disc is present. One was on old EIDE CD/DVD burner, and another was my Toshiba D-R550 set-top unit (record ATSC 1.0 US TV programs onto DVD-R instead of VHS tape). Had to send the Toshiba back to the factory, never saw...

  • Re: Copy-protected DVDs

Okay, I figured it out. I removed the LiteOn SH-222 and installed the LiteOn SH-224 (Lightscribe?), new out of the box. The DVDs in question played immediately, and I could see the "AUDIO_TS" and "VIDEO_TS" directories with a file manager. So they are perfectly normal DVDs (unless the DVDs are doing something weird, like not using CSS on the first 1-gigabyte .VOB file but using it on the others). Yes, I'll have to figure out how to disable the autoplay in Win7.

When I put the SH-222 back in, the problems returned. DVDs are...

    Copy-protected DVDs

Recently I got some DVDs that won't play on my PC drive. This is not unexpected, since there is a warning on the back of each package. But they play just fine on my set-top DVD player hooked up to the HDMI port on my TV set.

I bought "Head of the Class" where Howard Hesseman [WKRP in Cincinnati] teaches a class of extra-smart students. I also bought "Ode to Billy Joe", a 1976 movie.

All of these appear to be released by Warner Brothers. Rumor has it DVDs from several movie studios have a root directory that contains extra entries of non-existent files...

  • Re: Which software do you guys have the best of luck with for recovering corrupt phot

Is the external drive an SSD or a spinning drive?

I have used GetDataBack from Runtime Software several times. It works well. Recently I found my serial number from an e-mail they sent me in 2010. Yes, they said I am still eligible for a free upgrade to the latest version!

(I'll have to download, e-mail them and finalize this soon before I forget.)

  • Re: Best Overall Amazing Back Up Setup? 1K-4K Budget! Software + Hardware? Help!

I am trying to understand TrueNAS-Core -- the free version. It sounds like it will be a good file server, but I'm not too sure about backup. Maybe True NAS could be considered both. I don't understand some of the terms. I installed on an FM1 fanless PC (17 by 17 cm board), formatted two identical 500 GB SSDs for storage, and I'll be using them as duplicates, which I think is RAID 0.

If you really need 10 drives to store your files, you are probably much more familiar with this. Some of...

  • Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I just grabbed a Magnavox 20MF500T/17. Flat-screen television, with a weird power brick (16 volts DC, 3.75 amps). It seems to work just fine using the buttons on the TV set.

I can't believe I was dumb enough to take this from someone's trash. It has a 4:3 aspect ratio (16 inches by 12 inches). That is probably why it was there for several days and nobody else took it.

I could throw it in some trash cans outside some nearby apartments (the ones that do NOT have security cameras), but I'm not going to do that. I'm going to put...

  • Re: The 2023 Operating System Thread

Normally (99%+) I use Windows 7. But I think I still have Mint 18.3 KDE on my main system as a dual-boot option.

Interesting, I did use Mint to delete a file from my Windows 7 partition recently. I must have had a weird combination of characters that Windows couldn't delete for some reason. It was something like "18c(509[3]) L Ron Hubbard Removing Space Cooties" or some crap. (L. Ron Hubbard had "diarrhea of the mouth".)

  • Re: File server with PLEX?

You won't believe this. I found 166 GB of garbage on my Win7 drive. The Windows drive is a Samaung Evo (850 series I think) SSD with 480 or 500 GB. I'll have to delete my garbage then I will be fine. (I could copy some of the files to the Linux drive, which I think is a similar size Kingston SSD, but I don't want to do that.)

I did buy two more 500 GB SSDs recently, I now have everything I need to set up TrueNAS Core (the free version) on that 17 by 17 cm AMD "system on a chip" (5350). Maybe I'll get it to work, and maybe it will...

  • File server with PLEX?

    Hello,

Down through the years I have tried to have more convenient storage and backup. Recently, I have used a USB hard drive enclosure plugged into the back of my WRT-AC1200 router. But when I put photos on that drive, my local Win7 machine grinds to a halt. It takes a long time for thumbnail images to show up in Win7 File Manager, because I may have hundreds of photos in any directory I want to view. So I need to put the photos on my local Win7 machine. But I am running out of space.

Is the router giving the thumbnails from the USB drive enclosure to the Win7 machine...

  • Re: Diablotek PSDA600 PSU

I'm sorry, but from what I have heard, Diablotek PSUs are like the 1972 Fiat -- such horrible quality that they SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED (they will wear out motherboard components with their lousy power). I always thought MicroCenter's brick and mortar computer stores quit selling Diablotek after getting so many complaints about PSUs failing and destroying computers. But reading this thread, maybe Diablotek went out of business......

I'm glad you have ripple under control now, but if it were me, I would un-solder the wires from the...

  • OCZ Mod X-Stream Pro 600

I have an OCZ Mod X-Stream Pro 600 (semi-modular). One transformer is dated "1215" and one is dated "1210", and the largest capacitor (slightly bulging 400V TEAPO) is labeled "03/12", so yes it's pretty old. A few nights ago it caused the circuit breaker to cut off the power. It was plugged into an APC UPS, that appears to be undamaged.

When I reset the circuit breaker, the power supply fan did not even twitch. When I got a low-hour Seasonic PSU out of my basement, my system started right back up, so the rest of the system was not damaged.

  • Re: I am looking for a DOS based low level format-ing hard drive and SSD drive

Please do not attempt to low-level format an IDE drive (or any drive after that). Making sure the heads float EXACTLY over the magnetic traces (for a spinning disc) involves factory-only equipment/calibration.

Once upon a time I read a paper leaflet that suggested you can low-level format a Travan-3/4 tape cartridge but I suggest that information may have been false. And I have no idea why anyone would want or need to low-level format a Travan cartridge.

    In the old days, hard...

  • Re: Soundblaster AWE32 (CT3990) and resource conflicts...

My first computer (386DX-40, 4 megs RAM, April 1992) did not have a sound card or speakers, or CD-ROM (although it had SIXTEEN 30-pin SIMM sockets which I think was rare. 16 SIMMS * 4 megs = 64 MB max). When I added a sound card and CD-ROM in 1994, as many did that year, I got the Sound Blaster 32 (not the AWE32). My motherboard featured "decoupled refresh" in the BIOS. When the motherboard was refreshing 8 of the SIMM sockets, it could read or write to/from the other 8 (I think that's what it was doing).

  • Re: Proprietary battery pack

Yes. It was originally developed by a chiropractor, Volney Mathison. I have no idea why he thought this was appropriate for use in his field. Then when L. Ron Hubbard got into an argument with Mathison, suddenly LRH denounced Mathison's meter and you could only use LRH's meter, which (like everything else in Scientology) is rigged to give maximum financial gain to the organization.
