      Thanks, I feel bad just ordering those with free delivery. Must cost them 5 x as much just to deliver them

          Thanks. My eyesight isn't young anymore and I have bad colour vision.

          Still, that is a horrible design.

          A 1W, 470 ohm resistor would be able to handle 46mA at most.

          The power dissipation in the transistor would be ...

          P = Vce x Ic = ((Vin - Vout) - IR) x Ic

          = [(39V - 11V) - (Ic x 470 ohms)] x Ic

          So ...

          I = 46mA -> P = 293mW
          I = 40mA -> P = 368mW
          I = 30mA -> P = 417mW
          I = 20mA -> P = 372mW
          I = 15mA -> P = 314mW
          I = 10mA -> P = 233mW

          AISI, that is pushing the limits of the spec for those transistors, unless the load is drawing some miniscule current. However, if the load current were indeed insignificant, then the designer could have chosen a higher resistance value.

          Looking at it another way, let's assume that the designer chose a 1W resistor because it needs to dissipate 0.5W. Therefore the current draw would be ...

          Ic = sqrt(0.5W / 470 ohms) = 33mA

          At 33mA, the dissipation in the transistor would be 412mW.

            Yep, them colors are just for decoration and stuff. To make the circuit board look all pretty and colorful.

              Re: What is this that has blown?

              On a more pleasant note ive finished with the technic units I scored a few weeks ago. Have come out great and really happy with them. Love the looks and the sound, powering some big old Jamo speakers which I though it might struggle with but has been fine.

              Just took new AC cables and some of the pots needed cleaning out and working great.

                Easy way to find out is to measure the Vdrop on the resistor, and since current draws in the preamp section depends on the audio level it may not draw much at standby mode.
                Typical Dual OP-AMP such as 4558 does not draw that much at all: They may have a couple of them for Low pass EQ.

                  Wow, they look beautiful indeed. Kind of hurts me when I see the dinged-up knob on the turner. I just can't imagine how anyone could mishandle/abuse old classic gear like this. To me, those old units are a piece of art.

                    Indeed, and its more than likely given the clean condition of the amp it was probably the sellers (not original owner) who caused it.

                    Got my eyes on the matching cassette deck online which I will bid on and I'm thinking of buying the technics SB-F1 / SB-F2 or SB-F3 speakers. Perhaps going down the middle of the road with the F2s is the best compromise. Theres a MK2 version of the speakers, which probably sound better but not too keen on the looks. Think the MK1s fit more aesthetically, that's probably kind of silly as it should be about the sound!

                                  Lol, yeah. You don't want to be embarrassed in front of people when you show that beautiful tuner/amp playing, only to make some tiny sound from those speakers.
                                  I mean, don't get me wrong. Technics is a decent brand. But I would just avoid small speakers like that. They just can't match the performance of proper bigger speakers.

                                    I'm in the midst of reparing a battery charger in work which went pop, The bridge rectifier has shorted and took out a couple of other components. The rectifier in question has a part number KPB305G, and it looks like it's obsolete. Does any one know what I could replace it with?...

                                    Hello

                                    My Fujitsu Esprimo Q556 motherboards blew up. At least fuse, bridge rectifier and capacitor got damaged. I have changed fuse and bridge rectifier (DF1508S), but I don't know what capacitor it is (picture). I know that capacitors size is 47nF, but I don't know other specs for it. Can you help me to choose right capacitor for my motherboard?
                                    There is 240V AC on input side of bridge rectifier and 340V DC as output on capasitors side.

                                    Thanks....

                                    Hi, a friend of mine gave me this broken power supply, aparently it's the rectifier bridge that was damaged months ago. He took it to a technician and they didn't have the repair tools necesary but they remove the original bridge rectifier since it was damaged(burned). I have some of this rectifiers laying around, but they are not the same. The original its a pair of GBJ1506

                                    And I have KBL06 , KBL406 , RVB406, D5SBA20, D3SBA60, GBU608. Most of them have similar values to the original, but I'm not planning to use the PSU at full load (ie: SLI, an I7 processor, etc).

                                    Reading input and output of bridge rectifier on the same scope?

                                    I have a 40 volt AC transformer that I put a bridge rectifier on, and I wanted to see the input signal and the output signal on the same screen on my scope, so I set one channel up with the test lead on one side of the input and the ground lead on the other side of the input, then I used another channel on the scope and clipped the test lead on the positive side of the output then the ground on the negative side of the output.

                                    When I connected the transformer to power, the wire that was connected between the ground lead on the second channel and the negative side of the bridge rectifier...

                                    I had my Quadra 840AV (which I recapped and had working) plugged in for some time without using it and randomly decided to turn it on today. Unfortunately it did not turn on. After checking the PSU, I found out I was not getting anything from 12V, only from the 5V rail. After a few minutes, I removed the PSU and plugged it back in the electrical outlet and it suddenly started making a weird sound and soon after smoke started coming out. I quickly unplugged it. I opened it up but on first instance I didn't see anything out of the ordinary really. I later turned it back on and one of the MOVs blew...
