Bought computer thats is password locked

we were garage sale shoping when the guy at sale said he had a laptop for sale.He said it was password locked and it belonged to his bother and that he had forgotten password and had given him the laptop.I figured windows password would not be hard to figure out.So i took it to my brother to unlock it.He said it had a 3 layer password protection something about bios ,hard drive and something else he was not able to unlock it.He said he had never seen that level of protection.He said it was probably belong to some had know a lot knowledge about computers.I was wondering if it is possible to unlock or is the something i should just leave alone.

Depends what kind of laptop it is. If it's not a ThinkPad, BIOS password can be removed by reflashing the BIOS chip using a programmer. I recall there are solutions for the hard drive as well.

If it's a ThinkPad, no dice, as they have a dedicated security chip. It will need a new motherboard in that case.

It is a dell what would i need to unlock the bios as far as hard drive i would probably just replace.

Ok i see i need to buy programmer and remove bios chip and the flash it and reinstall the bios chip and it should work.

Can you supply the service tag number, service tag is like 123GB45-595B or 2A7B etc
Does it come up with a white screen This system is protected by the Password Authentication System
If it does what is that code?

Some Dells spit out a code after 3 failed password attempts and can be unlocked with a key generator program, or you can use the service tag printed on the bottom of the laptop to get the master password. You may be lucky and not need to take the laptop apart and flash the BIOS.

I called dell told them my situation .how a bought computer garage sale and bios is locked.They told me to register new ownership online. The will expedite the process.they opened a ticket an it will be sent to level 3 tech to get a unlock code.

I went into boot in the setup utility and disabled secure boot will that stop the bios password from poping up again
