we were garage sale shoping when the guy at sale said he had a laptop for sale.He said it was password locked and it belonged to his bother and that he had forgotten password and had given him the laptop.I figured windows password would not be hard to figure out.So i took it to my brother to unlock it.He said it had a 3 layer password protection something about bios ,hard drive and something else he was not able to unlock it.He said he had never seen that level of protection.He said it was probably belong to some had know a lot knowledge about computers.I was wondering if it is possible to unlock or is the something i should just leave alone.

Depends what kind of laptop it is. If it's not a ThinkPad, BIOS password can be removed by reflashing the BIOS chip using a programmer. I recall there are solutions for the hard drive as well.
If it's a ThinkPad, no dice, as they have a dedicated security chip. It will need a new motherboard in that case.A working TV? How boring!Originally posted by PeteS in CA -

Does it come up with a white screen This system is protected by the Password Authentication System

Some Dells spit out a code after 3 failed password attempts and can be unlocked with a key generator program, or you can use the service tag printed on the bottom of the laptop to get the master password. You may be lucky and not need to take the laptop apart and flash the BIOS.

I called dell told them my situation .how a bought computer garage sale and bios is locked.They told me to register new ownership online. The will expedite the process.they opened a ticket an it will be sent to level 3 tech to get a unlock code.Comment

Hello everyone, I come here to tell you my problem regarding the power-on password. It is not a bios reset demand, and i can't have any access to windows. This is the bios and power-on password that is blocking all other things.
My Omen 15-dh0052nf purchased second-hand was configured with the bios password upon purchase (very simple password :P ).
Having decided to sell it in order to get something more powerful, I reset all BIOS settings and set a blank administrator password. But the power-on password cannot be changed to a blank one so I let the actual password set.... -

I have a Inspiron 11 3185, and in the BIOS setup under Security it shows "Locked Setup", which limits pretty much everything in the BIOS. I'm using bios-pw.org to generate the codes for the hash, but they never work for the Locked Setup password. The codes generated for the System password and the HDD password work fine, but the code for the Locked Setup password always fails. I don't understand, if it works for the first two, why is it not working for the Locked Setup p/w? Since I can't disable it, anytime I reboot, even after a Windows update, I have to go through the hassle of generating... -
