After replacing nec/tokin capacitor orange light blinking

Hello, i replace the capacitor in a toshiba a305 and everything seems ok but when you power the laptop the power led is blinking orange and white. The cpu is working and the screen flashes then it goes off, like its detecting some voltage is wrong or something. I use the mini pci diagnostic card, i can see its reading so the cpu and board is ok, Anyone had this problem before?

move the memory to the other slot :P
Just cook it! It's already broken.

make sure caps are not shortin each other from under, redo..

Yes i already replaced the caps again, the fault was from the memory slot. i am just surprised how.

may be the voltage is fluctuating, try to measure it.

Let's have a look at your handywork.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

                Do you have scope ?
Check capacitors and resistor if there is any.

Thanks for help guys but the fault was simply from the memory slot.

Oddly enough - I have exactly the same problem on an L300 board I replaced the Tokin cap on. Flashes between green and orange and then shuts off. I'd love to know what's causing this since I can't see how a vCore cap replacement can interfere with a RAM slot.

maybe because of the heat when you remove the old cap the northbridge gets damaged somehow or some bad connection of the solder balls

Re: After replacing nec/tokin capacitor orange light blinking

Possible, but I don't desolder the original cap - but instead crush it and solder the tantalums over the contacts. So not much heat exposure. Also I think that RAM slot worked initially and then stopped a few days later.

I read somewhere that it's Toshiba's code for one of the power controllers having detected a short circuit. But surely if that was the case, it would just refuse to boot?

Hah, well blow me down - same here, same fault, swapped memory to the other slot and away it went all working fine.

So, what's the cause of this?

I was about to just toss this one in the bin ( L300 ) because I figured it wasn't worth spending more time on it - and I was lucky enough to see the title of this thread.

Did you swapped memory again, to see if it works fine too?

Now that there's three of us maybe we could make some decent headway on figuring out the problem.

I'll take a look at some point soon but my multimeter is fudged right now! I have lots of L300 boards to compare resistance too luckily.

maybe i can help with this one to.

Okay guys, obviously we will have different versions of boards etc, but I think pages 26-28 on this diagram are where we need to be looking. If you can grab schematics for your own models I imagine you'll find they're fairly similar.

My guess is a shorted cap on the +1.8v line somewhere perhaps? Maybe start by checking voltages are present there? Though IIRC these are the horrid tiny tiny little caps so it could be an interesting task.

First thing to do is figure out which of your slots has failed. Lines beginning with "MA_" appear to correspond to slot A. Lines beginning with "MB_" appear to correspond to slot B.

Should be interesting to see if we all have the same failed slot.

Re: After replacing nec/tokin capacitor orange light blinking

Apologies for triple post, I have an update.

                                      1) I've compared the resistances of each slot's key pins (V1.8 etc etc) and found no differences.

                                      2) Both 1.8v and 0.9v voltages are present regardless of whether there is a stick in the failed slot (for me, it is the topmost slot, slot B)

                                      3) The flashing does not occur when no CPU is present. So presumably, the powergood signal is involved somewhere?

                                      4) +3VS on pin 200 reads at 1.6v when no DIMM is present. I cannot read it when a DIMM Is present but if I boot it with one, and then without one, it briefly appears at +3.2v before dropping to +1.6v. (note, DIMM A does not have +3VS on pin 200)

                                      5) VREF when read at pin 1 is always at 0.87v at both slots, regardless of the slot configuration.

i also checked the voltages i can't find anything, seems all the voltages are there. the interessting thing is, the laptop is working the post is running its detecting the memory, you can see the screen flashing, like it wants to come on but then the orange light is shutting it down, but the system itself is working, maybe its a false alarm like some signal is not getting through. Should we try and update the bios here?
