Re: Short to ground on display board, how to find the culprit?

JF1 pin voltage = ~30V, pictures of other boards coming right up.....

Trust me when I say make and model are unimportant, you will not find a schematic for these devices anywhere

"JF1 pin voltage = ~30V, " 30V source forcing current through a small inductor through shorted circuit, no wonder it blew up.
Well, you'll never know, but at least we will know what this device does; never under estimate Badcaps people, there are many people in many different fields here.
It is kind of like this thread which OP does not think the pictures will help:

Here is how everything is connected.

In the last picture, the last pin on the right in the row of horizontal pins on the upper left of the board connects to JF1.

Re: Short to ground on display board, how to find the culprit?

In the last picture that JF1 pin (connected to burnt coil) seems to go to J4 (rj45) jack that has a blank rj45 plug in it, is it not normaly used and is it possible someone pluged in something they should'nt have blowing the inductor on the otherboard?

Thanks for the input RJ, I believe that port is used for diagnostics, I have never used it myself, every unit I receive comes with the blank plug.

So what is this device is for? We still do not know what we are dealing with here.

looks like it could be a second 4-20 ma current loop output like the other rj45, just not used in this application. did you ever clean up all the burnt carbon and try the board?

Re: Short to ground on display board, how to find the culprit?

I've had this same problem many times before and was never able to figure it out, no amount of cleaning will solve it. Whatever damage occurred causes false readings on most other components on the board, when removed they all test fine. The first component that made me realize this was the diode Z1, on the burnt board it reads in both directions while on a good one it does not.

Bud, this unit functions exactly the same as the honeywell in my other thread, but is a different brand and design:

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

                    by duwane
                    Hi All.

I have an 820-02016 board (A2337 M1) that has come in for data recovery. Reported as liquid damage, but no visible evidence of any liquid damage.

Board was initially stuck at 5v, and current only spiking occasionally to around 400mA and cycling.

After initial troubleshooting, found that C7800 (which feeds the power rail PP5V_BSTLQ_VOUT_SPMU) was dead short to ground.

Replaced C7800 and short gone. Board still stuck at 5v. Current draw behaviour changed. It now spikes up for a second to around 100mA to 130mA, then drops down to...

                    Repair Success! Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP
                    by valvashon
Yesterday I successfully repaired a Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP that had inadvertently been used as a surge suppressor at our transmitter site. It has already been replaced with an updated one but it's coming home with me now instead of being e-cycled. To be specific, this is the MA model that has the blue backlit display and has been discontinued, although this design may have been used in many UPS units including the smaller Middle Atlantic ones in this series.

Here's what happened: We experienced a brownout/surge at the site, which damaged the UPS and took our broadcasting...

Need help pinpointing my short on this board (Lenovo) NM-D351
                    by survivalbloke
This is a Lenovo Thinkpad P15s Gen 2 with a board NM-D351. I'm having trouble finding my dead short to ground. I have the area narrowed down after much probing. You'll see in the boardview, there are two coils involved. I removed those coils and verified that that short is not on the mosfet side of those coils. . You'll see an arrangement on both sides of the board of 5 caps and one smaller one to the side. I have removed ALL 12 of these small caps and still have the short. Prior to that I injected at those caps with 1v5a and the short was only drawing 800ma so I could not see anything on thermal....
