    Extending wifi

Hello I have a main router hooked up to wan and sending out wireless. The wireless does not reach the other side of my house. I have lan going to another router which is configured as a switch. There is a cable going to the room I need wireless in. Is there any way to set up an old wireless router to take LAN and send out wireless?

yes there is. using another router plug the cat5 line into a LAN port on the router not the WAN. Log into the router and disable DHCP, change the address of the new " access point" to one similar as your main router. example: netgear main router is 192.168.1.1 so make your new access point 192.168.1.11. the new access point must have the first 3 set of numbers the same and the last set of numbers should be below 249. I hope this helps.

      254 actually.

255 is not allowed, as is 000.

001 is default for routers, so I always use 254, which in this case is kinda "opposite" of 001. Makes it easy to remember when you have to work on something you installed 5 years ago, and the customer threw out the paperwork you gave them before you were even out of the door.

BTW, you want to configure this second router BEFORE you plug it into the network, or you may have trouble logging into it as the two routers will both want to be the DHCP server, and both will be at the same IP address.

        Re: Extending wifi

I set it up so that it was connected to the switch that I have in the room I need wifi in but it takes a very long time to connect to. Many times the connection failes and the wired connections don't work most of the time.

Any sugestiones to why this is happening?

buy a better main router. amped wireless and ubiquiti make good stuff. skip the typical consumer level trash (netgear, linksys, belkin, dlink etc.)

WiFi repeaters and/or adding a 2nd router never works right, even with DHCP disabled.

Probably not true (post distance, number of walls), more likely is that your computer is in "deaf corner" - bad position of wi-fi antenna. If it's desktop - extender cable for wi-fi antenna can help...

            As info,
            1) 18 - 24Mbits with strength "Low" through two concrete floors (with iron cage), and sometimes even with strength "Good" (desktop - using extender coax cable 1,8m long, SMA connectors)...

            2) 54Mbits at approx 10 meters through two brick walls (desktop - no cable)...

You say that also the wired connection not work well.
How is installed that cable? Does it ends with two rj45 or two wall sockets? If it ends with rj45 are they wired correctly (TIA/EIA 568A or 568B)?

Seems to work every time for me. If done properly, adding a second router can solve many issues.

Almost sounds like the router may be bad if it's dropping wired connections also. If you want to try a usb wifi dongle check out the dual antenna etekcity's. Much better than the alfas I've seen. My laptop picks up more and drops less than the alfa awus036nhr I have.

Also bad desktop (bad caps somwhere on mobo :-)) can send spikes through ethernet wire...

As previously stated, the most cost effective way to fix your issue is going to buy a good router that has the range that you require. All other methods I've seen are never stable and a waste of money.

running perfectly fine at my mum's place, had to install a second access point there as the "superhub" that virgin supply is garbage on the wifi side (limited range).

I put the old belkin router we used with the previous sufboard cable modem downstairs in the lounge (superhub is upstairs), switched off dhcp on it, set it to the same subnet and SSID as the superhub and it works like a charm with wireless devices automagically choosing the device with the strongest signal.

At home it's a different matter, we share the inlaws' internet via a range extender there and due to my father in law's choice of hardware (whatever is going cheap on ebay, usually TPLink crap) our connection is always dropping out - mostly because the DHCP on his router craps out.

Take a look at DD-WRT firmware for your router(s). It's free under GPL, well supported in FAQs, Tutorials and Forums. It will allow you to make your wireless router able to do all the things it is capable of which are hidden/disabled in many native commercial router firmware.

                          http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation

There are links to help determine if your router(s) are supported.

                                Hey man.
I've been trying to successfully set up this very repeater.
Alas, whenever I finish setting it up, the speed gets cut down by about 95%
(I get pure 33mbps down, 37 mbps up), to about 1/1 mbps on both.
                                What am I doing wrong?
I tried setting them on the same channel (without rotating them), same and different SSID, same width etc.

Would love to know if you have any suggestion.

                                Cheers!

We have been selling out customers the Netgear AC1900 instead of adding repeaters. The range on these things is far better than the Tier 1 routers that say Comcast or ATT provide. People with larger homes do fine with one of these in most cases. The only time it did not work for me was when the person had walls made of stone it was basically a castle. I do high end networking in the greater NY area for 20 years.

I'd recommend Powerline adapters and a WAP on the other end (other side of your house) you will get better latency this way and have a hardline to plug into for greater speeds. This setup has proved most reliable for me, but for best results your house needs modern electrical wiring.

Starlink WiFi router firmware of the HR1211 IC
                                          by filippia1981
Hi, I would like to ask if someone has the firmware of the HR1211 IC of the Starlink WiFi router in order to program a new IC

The diagnosis showed that this IC is shorted and need to be replaced with the right firmware. I cannot find the firmware

                                          kind regards
