  • Re: LG Flatron 24EN33TA No Backlight When Cold

Yes, when I originally acquired the monitor, the caps in the power adapter were bad. They were replaced with new caps.

Also, as mentioned in my original post, I tried powering the monitor from my bench DC power supply, eliminating the power adapter as an issue....

  • LG Flatron 24EN33TA No Backlight When Cold

    Hi all,

I've got an LG Flatron 24EN33TA with a backlight issue. The problem began with the monitor not powering up after sitting for a long time (overnight or during the day throughout work). When I would wake the computer up, the backlight would flick on for a second then go out. Sometimes it would take many tries to get it to come on. Once the monitor came on, it worked flawlessly until another long duration of being powered off.

I thought the problem would be bad caps but I checked both of the caps on the board and they are fine. I also tried powering the monitor from...

  • Re: Drive SMART status not showing up through RAID controller?

Well, round 2 on failing drives. I left the computer running while I was away for Christmas so I could grab any files off of it remotely while I was away.

Got back home a week or so ago and have been using the computer like normal. I just now opened up the little tray on the bottom right of the taskbar and there was the yellow "!" indicating an array went critical. Booted into linux and sure enough, one drive had 200-some bad sectors and a few unrecoverable.

    I'm running out of...

Yes, obviously all 3 drives with bad sectors have been removed and replaced with good drives. The spares I had on hand have 40000+ hrs on them but have no bad or pending sectors so they will be fine until I find some replacements.

And yes, I was not looking at the silly "Health" value on the HDSentinel tool, but rather the ~2500 pending sectors and 256 bad sectors.

One of the RAID arrays did not survive. Since both drives had bad sectors, the array would never rebuild. I cloned the...

Nevermind, just rebooted the system and the SMART status in RAIDXpert is back to "Not Support". So there must be something wrong with the SMART implementation in their Windows driver...

  • Re: Drive SMART status not showing up through RAID controller?

I took a look through the BIOS and SMART Reporting was enabled. However, the RAID mode was set to "Legacy ROM" and the other option was "UEFI Driver". I figured this had to be the problem. I switched the setting over and then Windows wouldn't boot because my system drive was MBR instead of GPT.

Should've been an easy fix but somehow my System Reserved boot partition was on the 1000GB RAID array that was failing and my Windows installation was on my SSD. So after days of struggling to...

Funny, the dude has exactly the same model of failing hard drives as I do. I will check for SMART settings in the BIOS once the drive is done cloning.

In my RAIDXpert software the SMART status is "Not Available" where his is "Healthy". I have tried several different programs. The one I use the most is HDSentinel. It just gives a generic value of 75% health and no details to the disks that are part of the RAID array. I can see the SMART info for all my other drives that are...

Sorry, I don't know where I got EZRAID from. I meant to put RAIDXpert. Edited the original post.

Every time I boot, I get the raid ROM page showing that everything is healthy, even though it wasn't

I suppose RAIDXpert is just the name of the interface software. The actual controller is part of the AMD SB950 chipset.

And in either case of it being software or hardware RAID, why would either of them block the SMART data from third party programs on the OS??...

  • Drive SMART status not showing up through RAID controller?

    Hey guys,

I have an Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 motherboard with AMD RAIDXpert. I set up a 1000GB RAID1 array on it. This was about 8 years ago. Every once in a while, a power outage or something would knock one drive offline and degrade the array. After a reboot the drive would be back online and it would rebuild just fine.

Recently, a drive dropped offline and the array became degraded. I figured it was no big deal and rebooted then set it to rebuild overnight. The next morning I took a look and both drives had dropped offline at 70% rebuild. Uh oh.

    I rebooted...

  • Re: LG 50PK550 turns on then off (Not the resistors)

I took a closer look at the ERROR signal on the Y-sus side and the pin from the connector goes straight to an unpopulated resistor on the board. So they are obviously not even using the ERROR signal on this TV. The CTRL_EN signal was behaving as expected from the manual so I don't see any problem there.

It is really difficult to track down exactly what is causing it to shut down, especially with no schematics available....

The 4 attached waveforms are of the Y-scan signal. Page 63 of the manual shows this signal at different timescales and my signal does not seem to match it. I get the same sort of signal but I am missing the group of 3 pluses at the beginning of each burst. The third waveform is of the gap between the two bursts where the 3 peaks should be. I have one peak like the one shown on page 64, but nowhere is there 3 consecutive peaks like is shown in the manual. Could this point to the issue?

    I...

I previously found the training manual for a 50PK750 which seems to be the same as mine. All of the circuit boards are the same as the ones in the manual.

I checked the FG5V, FG10V, FG15V, and FG24V on page 73 and they were all good for the second that the TV is trying to start. None of the solder joints look questionable either.

I also probed the floating ground and captured some waveforms. The first 4 waveforms show the floating ground in blue, and Va in yellow. The last waveform shows...

Yes, I agree with your logic. Something must be shutting the TV down due to some error being detected.

I read on several other threads that this TV will power up with no buffer boards connected. I tried this and there was still no change in the behavior. So I highly doubt that the problem is with the buffer boards.

Perhaps probing the signals on the ribbon cables going from the logic board to the Z-sus and Y-sus may show something? However, I have no idea what signals to be expecting...

I repeated the test with the main board unplugged from the power supply as well and there was no change. Exactly the same symptoms as with the main board connected to the TV.

I'm not exactly sure what to be probing for. I have checked all the transistors and diodes on the large heatsinks in diode mode and they all seem fine. I have also previously tested all of the large resistors including the 2.2 ohm ones. All tested fine. I'm not sure what to check next as I don't have much experience with the...

Ah ok. I did not know LG's had a self test mode.

I removed the LVDS cable and shorted the AUTO_GEN pins together then plugged in the TV. Exact same behavior as before....

Assuming you have a bin file with the firmware that is meant to go straight onto the NAND chip, you could use a $10 Tang Nano FPGA dev board to write the firmware.

Obviously this requires experience with HDL coding, basic knowledge of digital communication systems, and a lot of time spent reading the NAND flash data sheet. This is why they charge so much for the programmers, they have already done all of this work for you....

Fair enough, it may not be the Y-sus based on that test.

Attached are waveforms of -Vy and ZBias. The yellow trace in both waveforms is Va for reference. Both signals have exactly the same behavior as VSC did. They come up to voltage, and then die out right away.

Since Vs is stable the whole time, the logic board must be dropping some enable signal to the Y-sus and Z-sus boards. Do you know of any way to tell if this is due to a fault with the logic board or the logic board seeing...

  • LG 50PK550 turns on then off (Not the resistors)

    Hey guys,

I was given an LG 50PK550 plasma that tries to turn on then turns off right away. The guy before me bought a new power supply board which did not fix it so he included the spare board with the TV.

When I power up the TV, the relays click, then there is a quick flash of grey on the screen and at the same time I can hear the panel prime but then the panel goes out. The TV stays powered up for a short time, during which I can hear a faint ticking from one of the transformers on the power supply board. After a few more seconds the relays click and the TV shuts...

  • Re: Back-UPS RS 800 Not charging

So I figured I'd post an update in case anyone else happens to have the same problem. Since one person already has, it's probably likely.

After using the UPS as a surge protector for the past 8 years and having my computer turn off after every little power flicker, I figured it was finally time to fix it.

After a quick google search, I was able to find the schematic for this exact UPS complete with proper component designators and values. I don't know if I just previously did not look, or if the schematic has been...
