You've probably guessed from the title what this thread is for. Posting dust. Let's start with some case fans I removed from a customers PC a few days ago

Re: The dust thread
Most of the freebee computers I get are usually well packed with dust.
Worst one I got was a HP Pavilion 8756C. Grill on back was just a wall of dust, most likely because the intake fan on that was a 0.3A Delta screamer. There was also coffee drops on the dust, so it was sticky too. To top it off, there was some food chunks as well.
After clean up, though, it made a nice secondary computer. Came with hard drive and everything loaded on it, so I shouldn't really complain.
My computers, on the other hand, barely get any dust. Of course that's partly due to the fact that I also regularly vaccum the house and clean the AC/furnace air filter.Comment

Re: The dust thread
The PC that the two fans in my pic came out of was pretty bad, although not quite as bad as the one in ratdude's youtube video. The CPU heatsink was completely sealed (ie. you couldn't see the fins at all from the top) and because the CPU was a P4 Prescott the heatsink would get too hot to touch when it was running. It looks much better now with the dust gone.
My computer doesn't get very dusty internals as the Antec 1200 case has filters on all of the intake fans.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Re: The dust thread
I've seen that same dust before. I wonder where it comes from. A newer gateway I worked on was caked with it. The front fan was completely filled with it, as was the HSF and the power supply. We just vacuumed it out. Bug bits are worse though.Comment

Re: The dust thread
Whenever I see that, it's air compressor time. Gotta hold the blades so they don't spin way up and destroy the bearings though. Done that to a cheap fan, got it screaming with 185psi, fan blades eventually flew off.Comment

Oh, and I just remembered, I have come across one that would have to be as bad as if not worse that that one in the vid. The dust in the CPU cooler wasn't just a layer on top, it had gotten stuck in between all the fins (It was so bad I didn't even try to clean it, I just replaced it). The small space in between the bezel and front of the chasis was totally filled.I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Re: The dust thread
My wife PC always looks like that and worse. Its on the floor with the 5 dogs and four cats. She's not real prone to running the vac ether. Mine on the other hand is up on my desk, and get opened and blown out monthly. Now I did trash out a Gateway lappy and it turned out to be full of beach sand. Nothing like a well salted, and sanded Laptop!"It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

by emil_tHello guys. I have a problem with a PNY XLR8 GAMING RTX3090 graphics card. The problem is that it displays and works fine, but the fans don't spin at all. The problem occurred when someone else removed the fans in order to clean it and broke one of the fan connectors. He replaced it himself and after that, it wasn't working anymore. I guess he damaged something else in the process. What i have done so far: I found 2 capacitors next to the connector that were in a bad shape, he must have touched them with his tools - they weren't shorted, but i replaced them with similar ones from a similar card....04-12-2024, 06:54 AM

I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.
I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the... -

I know this will be an elementary little project for most if not all of you, but I thought I would write a post and get put on track, rather than bumbling my way through it with all kinds of trials and errors.
I REALLY would appreciate y'alls help.
This is the problem - My wife and I purchased a big ol Victorian/Colonial House in NYC two years ago. The kitchen is surrounded on 3 sides by exterior walls, there is also a 1/4 of the kitchen floor (ceramic tiles) that has a crawl space underneath, and the kitchen gets FREEZING cold... -
by howardc64Just did this on my 2021 13" MBP M1. Dust-Gate design flaw still present. Depending on cleanliness of the operation environment (often eating while using MB is probably the worst). Periodic cleaning is probably warranted.
Note this is quite challenging effort. One misstep will damage the LCD flex and render it useless. So take it to someone more experienced if uncertain.

by sda sadHope this is the right place, someone can help me.
My laptop started having a really strange problem....
When I turn it on the fans start working at a crazy rate and with random breaks...
They can work for say 10 seconds and stop for 2 seconds and then turn on again for 5 etc...
And it's from 0 to 100%. I tried to install AIDA and did the processor chip test and the graphics did not exceed 70 degrees and the fans were not even close to working at the power they work randomly.
