Nope! This was done by the manufacturer as we have a fair few of these dotted around the place and the ones I've peered inside so far are all the same! 😲
They clearly didnt think about (or care about) them being repaired as the 'removable' plugs were not in sockets and were actually soldered directly on to the PCB so (as you can see on the above photo) I had to desolder them to be able to work on the PCB and remove/replace the caps!
They have pretty much been left turn on all day (and night) for the last 10 years, only exception is during a power cut...

Opinions/Advice on Do/Should I replace ALL Electrolytic Capacitors on old equipment?
I've just been repairing some (very) old speakers with a loud hum that occurred as soon as you powered them on regardless if any actual audio is played through them. I work in a School so it's 99% likey that the Teachers have hardly ever turned the power off on them for well over 10+ years.

As you can see the top large capacitor on the right has a bulge on the top so...

I've tried to do this myself by extracting the .cap file from the TDK executable from Lenovo and using a hex editor to remove the appropriate headers and managed to flash it to the laptop but I'm still having problems with it so not sure if (as it's my first time trying this) I've not done the hex editing right or if there is another fault with this laptop....

I've got a laptop that I think (from what the user is saying) was intterupted when the BIOS was being updated so I need to flash a new one with my CH341A programmer, details are as follows:
Lenovo V15 G2 ALC
Type: 82KD
S/N: PF3AB3DC
I've uploaded a dump of the existing BIOS in case it is any use.
If there is anything else you need then please let me know.
Thanks....

I've replaced those capacitors and resoldered the 2 transformers but that has made it worse! It started off as a couple of minutes, I re-capped all the electrolytics and then it went to several hours before going off and now the backlight stays on for just 2-3 seconds!
This one has defeated me as I need the space on my workbench to repair things in my skillset - at least I've got some more experience with repairing monitors (even if it's negative)! Off to the WEEE it goes, but at least I gave it a try.

Hanns.G Hi221 Monitor - Works For A Second & Then Blank Display
I've got a Hanns.G Hi221 Monitor that works for a moment and then the display goes off but the power LED indicator remains on. If you power it off and back on again it does the same thing, it comes on and then the display goes blank. From a cold start it takes 10 seconds or so before the display goes blank but if you turn it off and then back on again after it already being on it goes blank a lot quicker so I'm assuming something is getting hot which is causing the display to go off.
I've uploaded a video of it happening on YouTube:
I've taken the monitor...

Re: Short Circuit tester
3*9V batteries could be 27V which is far too high! In the video you linked to, Learn Electronics Repairs uses 3*1.5V giving a max of 4.5V.
Don't modern CPUs run at 1V so even 4.5V probed in the wrong place could zap a CPU?

Re: UK Supplier Of Laptop Components - HDMI Port
20+ years ago I qualified as an Electronics Servicing Engineer where I was taught to fix motherboards down to component level - (until now) all my subsequent jobs taught me not to repair a motherboard but to replace it so for all these years I've barely used my electronic repair skills so having to re-learn lots!
It's a shame it's company policy to not use Aliexpress or eBay as the parts I tend to need are pretty much all on there (including the HP HDMI port I need)!
We have a couple of...

Re: UK Supplier Of Laptop Components - HDMI Port
Thanks! I'll take a look
I've been looking in service manuals for any kind of part number, no idea why I didnt think about looking on a schematic so thanks for that
We can't use Aliexpress either unfortunately - I'm a bit apprehensive about using ones from a donor board in case I damage/melt the plastic part of the HDMI port....

UK Supplier Of Laptop Components - HDMI Port
I've got a HP 255 G7 with a broken/worn out HDMI port that I need to replace.
For whatever reason, the company I work for does not allow us to buy parts from eBay so I'm looking for a UK based company that supplies things like HDMI ports for laptops so if anyone uses one then can you please let me know?
Thanks

Re: Lenovo V14-ADA - No Backlight
Both with and without the screen connector connected I get infinity resistance so it doesn't look like it is shorted to ground.
I have also removed the capacitor and tested the resistance on my multimeter and I could see it slowly increasing it's resistance up to infinity so I believe that suggests that the capacitor is OK.
I have since found a donor board from another laptop that had a damaged case and no screen (screen used to replace a cracked one on another laptop) and when using the donor motherboard...

Re: Lenovo V14-ADA - No Backlight
I've just removed the fuse (F2) and shorted the connection out with a tiny bit of solder...
I reduced my bench power supply to just a few milliamps and when connecting the power my linear bench power supply immediately shut the amps down so there is definitely something still wrong with the motherboard causing this fault.
Using my (very) cheap thermal imaging camera I have connected to my iPhone I couldnt see anything getting warm/hot to indicate what might be at fault.
I have now removed the solder I used...

Lenovo V14-ADA - No Backlight
I've got a Lenovo V14-ADA laptop with no backlight. I have changed the whole screen assembly from a known working one in our Spares and Repairs tub but to no avail as there is still no backlight on the screen.
Using a DMM I have tried to find the 20V power rail (it's a Lenovo so they tend to use 20V rather than the more normal 19V) on the screen connector but on pins 1 & 2 I'm getting 0V.
I have tested the continuity of the fuse (F2) and it is open circuit.
Is there anything I should be testing a this point or is it just...

Re: Rebirth of a Pentium II - P6DKF Retro Build
Nice to see a proper full-size tower case - you don't see many like that any more!
Amongst many other projects I've started (and yet to complete) I have a P100 desktop mini-tower PC that I'm refurbishing so it's great to see I'm not the only one around here still tinkering around with old tech

Re: failing hard drives after sitting for years...
I have a collection of over 350 retro/vintage laptops a lot of which are 20-30 years old (I got a job lot from a bloke at a car boot sale for around £75 per 100 old laptops) - 75% came with hard disk drives and the vast majority still work!
I did have one the other day that was dead, not spinning at all - when I held it up to my ear I could hear nothing. It was destined for the WEEE (eWaste for you non Europeans) so I had nothing to lose by dropping it from a short height and low and behold when I reconnected it, it...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hello everyone - I cannot believe I have only just found this forum! After becoming a qualified Electronics Servicing Engineer several/many years ago (until now) I've never really had an opportunity to use it to fix motherboards etc. down to component level as the places I've worked would either just swap out the motherboard or say it was beyond economical repair.
It's all starting to come back to and I'm learning new things all the time about exactly how a laptop motherboard works (it's mainly laptops I work on)...
