Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
I'd consider Elna a maybe. IMO, Nichicon, United (Nippon) Chemicon, Rubycon, and Panasonic/Matsushita are the top tier miniature lytic mfrs. And Sanyo for their OSCONs (I haven't used their lytics). Elna, Illinois Capacitor, and maybe Teapo would be second tier. The rest of the usual suspects are scary except in really low stress applications.Comment

Their cost is why you don't see them much in IT type things.

Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
But yeah, a lot of their caps are marketed towards audio.
I'd say ELNA is better than nichicon, but presumably overpriced. Of course, rubycon trumps them all --> though I've got some 30-year old sanyos in my old analog equipment that's getting along just fineComment

Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
Elna better than Nichicon? In specialty capacitors, maybe. In low impedance, high ripple current and long life capacitors? I highly doubt it. I don't know how many years ago I posted what is quoted above, but I'll stay with it. Rubycon may be a bit better on the low impedance high ripple current types; Nichicon and UCC may be a bit stronger on the high voltage, very long life electronic ballast types.PeteS in CA
Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

A lot of nichicons I've seen always seem to get puffy at their vents a little bit. Not always the case, but very frequent (same with chemicon).
Whereas ELNA is a lot more consistent with quality, I think.Comment

Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
That reflects well on what Elna produced 15 years ago. I've worked in power electronics since 1980, and with a few noteworthy exceptions (the Nichicon HMs and HNs in that defective 2003-2004 batch and more recently, NCC/UCC KZG and KZJ) Nichicon and NCC/UCC have been the standard for comparison, and Rubycon and Panasonic are of the same class. My very limited experience with Elna - 20 years ago - was not good. But that was 20 years ago. As others have pointed out, commit a design error or misuse the part, and the very best cap out there will fail quickly.PeteS in CA

I got a pair of big 24000uF 80v ELNA capacitors too. They are still good!Muh-soggy-kneeComment

Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
It seems Mallory is highly regarded but I rarely see these nowadays. Just a lot of old ones when they used to be their own company. Same with Sprague. (Both these brands were bought by Vishay?)
Any comments about Illinois Capacitor - I still see these once in a while, just not frequently. I haven't seen any of these blow up at least, but ESR? I don't know...Comment

Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!
Look at these babies. Operated many years for a solar installation as a 120V pure sine inverter. Why it is open, is the switching relay finally failed through magnetism of the contacts, causing >single cycle transfer blinking lamps when switching off grid power.
Edit, that goo at the base is hot glue. The entire board is comformally coated, as well.Comment

by slybundahey all, iv got my favourite battery charger here which iv had for many years probably 15 years now or maybe even more. it still works good but thought id open it up to clean the dust out of it, lots of dust inside but now its clean and noticed 4 capacitors inside it and wondered if i should replace them.
it has inside:
2 x 47uf 16v caps 105c branded as Su'scon (lol sounds sus to me)
2 x 470uf 16v LZ105c branded as G.Luxon
not heard of these brands are they any good?
iv attached photos of the charger and the board inside for an idea on the type of...-

by cookAre there good brands for 'run capacitors' or 'start capacitors' that are used on electric motors or heat pump compressors? ... r are the good capacitor brands for electronics (power supplies, laptops, motherboards, etc.) also the good brands for run capacitors?
Yeah I know this might be a novice question, but I just wanted to be sure. I did do a search on the forum but did not see this question asked before.
Thanks-

by dragon3xHi, I have some 32 bits computer motherboards that need repair, as they fail to
power on.
Here are some examples :
(N.B. "capacitors" indicated here are electrolytic capacitors located in the onboard
switching supply area).
(N.B. #2 : I could not find a 3300 microF aluminum-polymer with a higher voltage
than 6.3 V.)
1 - Motherboard #1 : this is an Asrock K7VT2 (socket A) that still works well. To put it on test
I replaced capacitors with aluminum-polymer.
3300 microF/6.3 V. x 4 replaced by 3300 microF/6.3 V. (KYOCERA... -

by sam_sam_samI did not have any 27uf @ 50 volt capacitors but one nice thing is that it has enough room for two capacitors in parallel a 22uf and a 4.7uf @ 50 volts 22 plus 4.7 equals 26.7uf which so very close to 27uf I will show some pictures of it sometime tomorrow
This is one of the shit est boards I seen in a very long time and it was the daughter board the traces just lifting off the board I had to use the capacitor leads to repair the the traces and the main board is not any better because I had to repair several traces for the daughter board to the main board
