  • Re: The GOOD Capacitors Thread!!

The board they are soldered to is copyright 2000, but build date is 2004. They are 105C 22x50mm 470uF @ 250V. There are 4 at this size on the board, on the DC side. And one 105C 25x27mm Green GU 100uF 400V on the AC side. Pre China Xantrex 2000W inverter, 100A 12V charger combo, got for a steal due to that slow AC switchover relay. The conformational coating really does a job at keeping PCBs looking new.

Is it bad I am marveling at the largest capacitors, aka the non-5V circuits on the device? All others look fine by visual...

Look at these babies. Operated many years for a solar installation as a 120V pure sine inverter. Why it is open, is the switching relay finally failed through magnetism of the contacts, causing >single cycle transfer blinking lamps when switching off grid power.

Edit, that goo at the base is hot glue. The entire board is comformally coated, as well....

  • Re: Battery powered device blown on 12V

I remember selling these and some took regulated (more expensive) 12V adapters and the newer models would make a sell point with the direct 9-30V cheaper adapters (usually with a blocked off female pin to prevent what I did).
I used a regulated supply, unfortunately my 12A one (Microsoft game console).
I can get it to run on 3 AA batteries again, but it needs to air out for a bit. Fried tantalum SMC stink.

I posted so maybe I can understand circuits better. Like, where was the protection, was it in the axial electrolytic...

  • Battery powered device blown on 12V

I wired an old (1993) GPS to 12V through its external connecter and blew a 100 uF SMC capacitor to carbon and most of the associated gold trace lifted and vaporized. Also a 10V electrolytic went open circuit. The input diode seems OK still, so I'm ruling out reverse polarity. So, likely, the device had no internal regulator. Magellan Meridian. Used data from the Meridian XL.
