Laser repair of LCD vertical line defect - You have got to be kidding me!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4gyPQLhmu0

Damn Chinese did it again. I never thought anything like this would be possible.

I was researching tab bonding techniques and stumbled upon this, thought i'd share.

While i am sure this is out of the reach of anyone but big TV manufacturing companies, getting back to typical tab bond failures, i have found that you can order ACF bonding film from China at a price that is not too enormous - $80 a reel. There is 50 meters of tape on the reel, that should be enough for a hundred screens with room to spare.

Now to cobble together a bonding machine....

I have found 2 shops here in Romania that offer tab bond repairs for a reasonable cost ($50 a screen, provided you bring your own cracked panel for spares), but videos posted by both companies show the same kind of bonding head that looks like a bought affair, and a birdie told me it cost $5000. That's not the kind of price i had in mind.

Interesting, looking at the video it seems to me they are using the rework station to cut the trace to the column, isolating it from the defective cof channel making the line not noticeable. I could be wrong there.

"making the line not noticeable" That is the key word, making not noticeable, it is not in the sense that the problem is fixed, it is that you are not noticing it unless you really looking for the missing column.

It looks like what they may be doing is to cut the vertical line and tie it to another line.

I know my jaw kinda dropped when the black stripe just disappeared from the screen. I was like "WTF?!? They have backup traces included on the substrate, or what the..?"

This is the part that they are using! Im interested if you can do this with a normal heatgun/controlled temperature?

                  Look at this video :

Maybe a heat controlled reflow system might do the trick?

That's impressive but isn't it simply removing one address line?
So either the line will not be rendered anymore.
Or does he bond it to the adjacent line, so two lines will now show the same thing?

Heatgun no, but something resembling an oversized soldering iron might do the trick. Use of the heat gun would be to remove the damaged tape before re-applying it...

From what i see, the head is stuck down to the LCD using a controlled pressure so as to not crack the glass, then a high heat pulse is applied to bond the tape. The temperature of the bonding head is measured by the thermocouple in the middle, which is built into it. That shouldn't be too hard to replicate.

in my opinion the line is not made non noticeable but the broken line is connected to another line of the same color, which can be a very nice solution but price of the machine is roughly between 50000 USD to 100 000 USD, which is nt good
