    Esr meter.

I bought one of these meters on eBay, because I've seen you guys mention it, and thought that it would come with some instructions but it didn't.
Does anyone know where I can read how to use it? Or if anyone here can tell me how?
    Thanks.

It was listed as an esr meter. There is a setting that says esr.

            Re: Esr meter.

            You don't need instructions.
Put a capacitor between any two of the 3 leads and it will test them
Put a resistor between any two of .......
Connect all 3 leads to mosfet / transistor and it will test them and should show you the pinout on the screen.

The ESR function is not great and I prefer to use the Dick Smith ESR meter.

            Edit
Just taken another look at your pictures and it says C+ESR so I'm not sure of the other functions I mentioned, but you can try.
You can connect the item for testing between Pin1,2 or 3 on the IC socket if not using the leads. All the 1's connect together, 2's connect together and 3's connect together.

Always fully discharge the cap before you put it into the meter.

Thanks budm. What is a good way to discharge one quickly?
I just tested a 450v 100uf capacitor on a sharp psu/inverter that you were helping me out with.
Is this a good reading or bad?

                    Re: Esr meter.

This is the type I bought and it's been well worth the money especially for testing transistors and mosfets but as I said earlier it tends to read ESR higher than when I use my Dick Smith tester.

                      Re: Esr meter.

The main filter cap is usually not low ESR type, that is pretty good ESR reading, most concern on that cap is the ripple current spec.

Sorry guys, I know I am probably driving you nuts, lol.
These aren't questions about a specific display. I measured to mosfets from said psu, they are the same, the number on them is K4096.
They are still in circuit, so that could be the problem, but should they not have the same measurment?

You should learn how to test capacitors and read the data sheet on each one before asking what the esr should be. The data sheet will say so lol

An ESR meter can be quite a handy device for quickly checking capacitors intially in circuit which you can do with the Dick Smith/Bob Parker ESR testers.
As has been said many times on the Forum, the capacitor may look good, measure close to it's value (out of circuit) but have too high an ESR. It's a very quick way of checking if you suspect a capactitor fault.
