maybe it isn't just the main, tv just shuts itself off, won't turn back on, off for a day maybe an hour, it might turn back on, thinking its a cap issue on the power supply, even tho all the proper voltages are there, does that seem plausible?, Thanks.

anyone know which cap/s on power supply, would make tv just shut off?, thanks.

this tv is strange, on the stand upright, it won't come on or only stays on about 10 minutes, off the stand face down it's been playing fine for about 3 hours now.

                  Re: sony KDL-46S4100 proper voltage

I ran into this problem a while ago on an S 4100 and it turned out that if I heat the main I see back side we're all the small SMD components are the TV would stay on. I would think that reflowing the main processor would fix it but I tried and that did not I believe it's a small SMD component on the backside of the processor changing value probably a resistor or a capacitor. But there are so darn many back there but it's hard to tell which one it is

But of couse I did have a flashing led error although.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

                    Re: sony KDL-46S4100 proper voltage

have 3 mainboards for this tv acting the same way, thats what makes me suspect the power supply, but the power supply voltages are correct, wondering if it's a bad or weak/intermittent cap?

anyone know if this would be good for testing capacitance of capacitors?, thanks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/enhanced-Tra...item4ad9958236

basically same tester i have got seems to do the job ok but as you know you have to remove each capacitor to test.
Regarding your tv it seems odd it only goes off stood up maybe on the psu has it got transistors etc mounted on heat sinks im wondering if when heated up the weight of the heatsink maybe causing a broken solder joint on a transitor/diode/transformer leg etc just a thought.

makes sense to me, I'll try running some solder over m, thanks vinceroger69.

my original mainboard seems to have problem/s, put that in parts bin, touched up 3 or 4 joints on power supply, they didnt look bad, been running with no problems for a few hours now, might have fixed it, fingers crossed, thanks Splitcrete, Vinceroger69, and everyone who helped or tried to, I hope I can help you guys on something. Remember folks you can buy capacitors and stuff right here at Bad Caps.

well was working fine, now I just tried to turn up volume with remote and it shut off and won't restart, it did that before I touched up some joints too, funny it would shut off while trying to adjust volume, anyone have this problem before?, Thanks.

One thing you have to remember on these older Sony's, is that you have to go by your serial number when you order a replacement main board. If you get one from the wrong serial range, you will just get a blank screen. I went through hell with a KDL-40W4100 last spring. Three different mains before I got one which worked. And all the numbers on the boards, even the boards themselves, are all identical. It's a firmware mismatch I think. I tried switching eeproms too, but peeled traces. I won't even try to get a Sony board on eBay. Shopjimmy or nothing. Too many headaches. Next one I get, I'm going to play around with JTAG and see if I can dump the firmware and flash new.

its like pulling teeth finding firmware, had a long talk with samsung, they said as a rule they only go back 3 years, and most of the time, they don't even issue updates unless theres a well reported problem, couldnt find firmware on sony ether, found some here from capkid, Thanks capkid, now if I could just figure out why it turns off when I try turning channel or turning up volume.

I found firmware on Sony's site for the 40W4100 and also , I think a 40SL140. But I think with JTAG you can download the firmware from the eeprom. Unless they have it locked somehow.

not sure, switched out tcon with spare, tv seems to run ok but when I try streaming thru my android device it goes black, no pic. or sound, it seems like it can't handle the little bit of extra work or something, suspect a marginal cap on power supply, time to quit guessing and get an esr meter, anyone encounter this problem?, thanks.

must be heat issue, took back off no problems, leaving back off, threw it on the stand, DONE, done messing with it, if something goes out, then maybe I can track down the problem, Thanks for the help.
