VIZIO E470VA just glows black - Lots of details included

    I have a VIZIO E470VA 47-inch Class LCD HDTV 120 Hz from 2011

I have a lot of info here. I am an IT guy so I thought it would be helpful for the details up front- sorry if it's not all relevant.

Its been a good TV until recently.
When you turn it on, you do not get a logo on the screen but the bezel light “VIZIO” will light up bright for the duration of the TV being on.
About a second after the bezel lights up, the screen will have a faint black glow for about 3 seconds.

During this time, the LED1 on the inverter (I think) will glow blue and fade out (approx. 3 seconds)
As soon and the blue light fades out, the backlight glow turns off for about a half a second and then then back on.
    a. The bezel light is on the entire time
    b. The blue LED1 comes back on and fades out after the 3 seconds
At this point it's done doing anything and will sit like this (Bezel light on, warm even glow on the black blank screen, LED1 not lighted on inverter)
    • Remote works- power on/off
    • Side Panel- power on/off
    • If I hit the input choices on the remote, the blank glow will change slightly like it is trying to change sources.
    • No menu or volume image present on screen at any time.

    Additional information-
A few weeks prior to my TVs slumber, in the mornings when we turned it on, it seemed to have a “warmup” issue.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

For the first 20min or so, it would turn on and you could hear the sound and see a clean image, but it would stall on a frame for a second or so, then show an updated frame current with the sound. Eventually it would show more frames and then it was working fine until it was turned off for more than a few hours

Removed and visually inspected component for obvious heat or cap issues- none seen but not 100% sure I know what to look for

    Voltages noted:
    CN903 to inverter
TV in standby- no voltages on any
    TV On- 24volts, on/off=5v, DIM,3v
    CN905 to Main
TV in Standby- 5v on 5v pins 11 and 12- no other power
    TV On- on/off=5v, DIM=3v, 12vOK, 24vOK, PS/ON=5v, 5vOK

    HI
It sounds like your backlights are on and the pixels are not lighting
So either your main board is not sending signal to the t-con board or the t-con is not translating it to the lcd panel

try checking the f1 fuse on the t-con board
If that is ok and getting power, check the signal pins for voltages to see if power is getting to the t-con connectors

I can check that. Any ideas what the voltages should look like going to the t-con? Nothing is marked

About 12VDC. How about the pictures of your T-CON, may be we can see something you are not seeing. Also try having just one cable between the LCD panel and the T-CON connected one at time to see what you get.

I do see another heatsink under that shield, so if it has a BGA type chip under there, that could be a likely culprit

Sorry for the confusion- I am still learning what part is what

This is the pics I had on my phone. Let me know if I am missing a pic and I can have my wife take one from the house and send it to me. Still fuzzy on where the T-con is. Unless I need to dig deeper in the chassis. Thanks again- Dave

You can measure the voltage at both ends too.
                            Continuity with TV off.

No pictures of the whole back side of the TV? That board looks to be for 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate processor.

Here is a pic of the back.

Caleb- the fuse is good and has continuity and voltage when on. Also, the little cable connector has power from the bigger board.

Budm- I did disconnect the ribbons one at a time with no change to the TV

OK, it is down to either the main board or this processor board, you will need the scope to find out if the main board is sending the LVDS signals to the board or not, I lean toward this processor board being bad.

Thanks Budm. I am interested as to why you "lean" toward the processor board. You have over 12 thousand posts on this site, you obviously lean for a reason. I am trying to learn a bit from this endeavor.

Next, the processor board is which part?

The board I am talking about is the one that has two white flat ribbon connected on the Top which go to the panel.
Without using the scope to see if there are signal present at the LVDS line to verify 100% for sure if the main board is bad or not, I have not seen many main board that failed to send ALL the LVDS signal and the sync signals to the T-CON board, it is possible though that can be main board problem. The main board is not cheap, the processor board is around $50.
You can also contact shojimmy to see what they think. They may seen the common failure in this model and can give you suggestions.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to a scope to verify the the signal. But to your point, you would expect to see some form of garbage on the screen if the other stuff was working and able to try to translate it visually from a degraded main board?

If the processor board is centered at the top of the panels backside, then where is the T-CON?
