What do you think of this review? [New product]

So, you make a PCB with a zillion cap filter bank. How effective is that?

Saw that yesterday. Blinked a few times, especially after, as I'd assumed, it didn't do much. Then I wondered what brand most of those capacitors are, and if those failed, how many people would figure out that the product was no longer working, at all... Hope nobody here has to recap one of those!

I figure you cannot turn the computer off with one of these?
It would take a while, and inrush would be pretty steep as well.
      I wonder how it's better than say a 3v, 5v, and 12v, nicad pack?

Kinda reminds me of a bug zapper I made back in high school.

It's just a bunch of caps!

Cross-shaped vents - hope they're Nichicon and not something worse.

The caps could be aqueous electrolyte Nichicons, e.g. HE, HD, HM, HN, HV. I have serious questions about whether PC P/Ss can drive that extreme a capacitive load and still be stable (not oscillate). The generic P/S type spec (e.g. ATX) should indicate how much load capacitance on each output a P/S designed to that spec should be able to handle. That box looks like it will exceed that spec by an order of magnitude or two.

Any idea if those caps will bleed fully once turned off? A good filter bank can retain charge for years.

Erm, that thing would seriously overshoot the max inrush current the ATX PSU units are designed for.

That is one of the reasons the DFI Expert mobo has problems with some PSU's, too much inrush current at power on...

There are coils visible, those can easily limite the inrush current ot the allowed level. There is nothing magic on that. Any VRM unit i have seen has this inductor to acomodate ATX spec. But i think that this device is to oversized, and i doubth that they used anything high grad caps. Ipersonally would use less caps but from superior quality and ESR. Furthermore i would make the power cord after the box as short as posible, as anything else will lessen the benfits. The VGA booster should be concected directly to the GFX card, without any cable.
