Re: Another Shuttle MV19 saved
Note that the D.S. caps as mentioned in this thread appear to be same (brand at least) as those "SG"-marked caps 'pinobot' had found pre-blown, as it were, on his SV24/FV24. https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1590
They could prove a worthy match for Chhsi for the title of "worst cap brand of all time". Re: Another Shuttle MV19 saved<br />...und pre-blown,

Re: Best power supply you've had
This Etasis-built Silverstone ST75ZF (as recommended by our good Jonnyguru!) is definitely proving its worth. While more expensive than your standard "k3wl gamerz" PSU, just taking a look at its internal design and component choice is enough to convince one that it's in a league of its own.
Obviously, if one looks back to the (early) 90s, deciding on a "best" PSU, in terms of reliability becomes somewhat more difficult. My impression, from memory, (although I don't have any stats to confirm this) is that PSU failures...

Re: Now here's an interesting OEM motherboard.. ;-) Guess who made it???
Agree with both of the above, since UL E203413 gives it away.
Seriously though, MSI does tend to use some of the better cap brands, particularly when compared to other standard "desktop" board manufacturers. Of the two MSI boards we have here at home, we have a KT6V and a Neo2, whose CPU VRMs bear, respectively, all panasonic and UCC.

Re: Antec True 380SP + Fuhjyyu cap - lights out
Welcome Melios,
I've looked through the catalogs of the more popular Dutch component vendors for you, and I've been able to find quite a number of 470uF, 200V caps (Panasonic-brand especially), but all of these are, at best, 25dia x 30h. As far as you can see, would the extra 5mm height be already enough to prevent them from fitting in the PSU?
Another common size seems to be 25dia x 20h, but these tend to have capacitance in the range of 220uF, and so would hardly prove adequate substitutes for your...Last edited by tiresias; 09-07-2006, 08:22 PM.

Re: Asrock GE PRO-M2 (S478)
Sounds like you successfully repaired it, good job!
Don't worry about the "CMOS checksum error" message - many flashing utilities are set to clear the nvRAM following a BIOS flash, so it is normal that you should receive that message during the first reboot....

Re: For those that swear by KZG...
Great find Topcat... it would be unfortunate if UCC caps were to start getting unreliable too; the list of truly "never bad" low-ESR cap brands would get shorter still. Are we now down to Rubycon, Panasonic and Sanyo only?
The VRM on my wife's motherboard (by MSI) is packed with those KZG creatures... I'll be sure to inspect it later today just in case.

Negative feedback - the more information you give them, the less they return.

There's no option to automatically "can" the board. As in, it's missing a BIOS-based...

Interesting! Are both the switcher transistors and the output rectifiers on that one heatsink?...

Oh you mean that M - no that looks like part of one of the Ltec caps. I think I can see the edge of the Ltec logo on the sleeve on top of the cap in that picture...
Let us know how it goes...

Re: Hec 300w LRPTF
(M) should be Matsushita (aka Panasonic), certainly one of the better brands.
Random reboots can be caused by so many issues, either with PSU, memory, motherboard or indeed anything attached to it, that you'd have to eliminate all non-essential components in order to narrow down the cause.
So, for example a good test might be to run memtest86+ (to exclude any software/driver issues), with only the bare PSU (obviously), motherboard, CPU, memory and one CD/DVD drive installed...

Re: Samxon recap
That does depend on which model we're dealing with though - the "coolergiant" series for example has a standard "push-pull" setup with 80mm fans ....

Another recommendation for the NEC 4551A: both my wife and I have one in our machines, and it's worked just flawlessly.

Re: Eurocase Hec cap exploded
Monstrous! That PCB isn't fixed in a position where it would be very rigid, which means the cap in question must have struck it with a considerable amount of force.
Could you show us the other side of the PCB, where the impact took place?

Re: Samxon recap
I'm afraid so. Are you not able to find any of the (older, even) Enermax-branded models? They can be quite reliable (in my experience) and generally not too expensive......

Re: Soyo Dragon Cannot Restart After Shutdown
A few questions:
- Has the motherboard always behaved in this manner or is this a new development?
- What PSUs have you tested it with?
- Have you tried clearing the CMOS, or failing that, flashing the BIOS with the manufacturer's latest version? I've seen BIOS flashes cure all manner of bizarre "hardware" problems.
Let us know. ...

Re: Multi-processor alternatives
If you're looking for a very efficient, low-power dual intel system, take a look at the more recent Xeon LV offerings. Each CPU is as powerful as a dual-core 2GHz pentium M, and they have a rated TDP of only 31W....

Re: X-Fi Fatal1ty full of Jamicons
Well, if I understand correctly, the smallest caps, by virtue of the circuits they tend to be used in, are much less likely to fail than your classic, say, 6.3v 3300uF.
Still, the lack of visible vents on top of the smaller cans does not mean that they are immune to bulgy/leaky failure....

Oh they're definitely registered - see the two chips above the central notch. There are nine memory chips, which means they're ECC as well....
