Re: USB woes: crashing, noise, bsod, wiping devices, destabilising, causing random input.
I have to deal with multiple grounds when installing shipboard systems.
The DC neg grounds can be 12v 24v and 32v all on one panel.
Then next to this will be a panel with 120vac neutral and 120vac ground, not to be confused with rf ground or sea water ground or bonding system.
There are times when cables must be connected to ground only at one end and other times when extra grounds from chassis to device have to be added.
I've put in radar antenna cables that have...

Re: Recapping failure
Normally I'd agree that your missing ring would not be an issue, but you say it's a layered circuit.
I also figured you soldered to the leads to eliminate the problems of stressing pads.
You should look very closely at that one cap and examine the hole physically and measure it for continuety.
Then start to look at other component failure as 4004 said.

Re: USB woes: crashing, noise, bsod, wiping devices, destabilising, causing random input.
Screening in this context means grounded shielding.
I had an old NEC computer that had screen grounding everywhere along with strapping of grounds to every part.
Put your computer near your television tuner on channel 2 and you'll see what a lack of screening can do.

Re: Resettable fuse on a motherboard
It might be worth while to use a powered usb hub as a test of the usb ports.
If your hub supplying its own 5v power allows 500ma of usb load you may operate that way as a work around.

Re: Is it difficult to repair Western Digital hard drives?
The vent hole cannot be blocked.
That's why I posted how important it is.
When your drive spins up with no air cushion under the heads, you have a big problem, but bigger problem with missing connection pins.
If it was my drive I'd put it in a shell enclosure with wire connections soldered permanently onto control circuit.

Re: Is it difficult to repair Western Digital hard drives?
Vent is clearly marked 'do not cover' for an important reason.
Your drive is NG, but that's not to say there's no chance of getting it to spin one more time and if lucky getting some of the data.
The vsticker over the hole means that the drive was being damaged every time it was used, not a good thing.

I used to get that one all the time.

Love to see someone get a temperature reading from that.
It's very cool that you can now heat sink a big cap.

That is not laymans terms unless he stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.
And just maybe the network had the Oompa loompas on and the legs really were short.

Re: AOC 1 second display
Speaking of sounds, leave the inverter unplugged and try for audio.
The last set I looked at like this it was in fact the audio amp section that had shorted.
It displayed the same symptom.

Re: APC UPS units - troubleshooting
All the manuals are here, check in the troubleshooting of your unit.
The big ones can report internal fuses and breakers out.
Very likely that it is just bad bats though.

Re: VeiwSonic VA912b
Good observation.
It seems the better or more efficiant the transformer the smaller the mosfets are.
The last two inverter modules I bought yesterday have no discrete components and drive six lamps.

These fail also, I have a collection of dead ones.Re: VeiwSonic VA912b

...yesterday have

Re: Capacitor value
Did you slip in a decimal point? It's large enough to be 300pf.Last edited by arneson; 10-25-2008, 10:17 AM.

Re: RCA G27391WK Please Help!!!
It's like me saying use laymens terms to discuss the reasons my engine light is on.
You have to know where the verticle deflection section is.It's next to the horizontal section.
Set up mirror to watch screen while reaching in with insulated device to tap that area while watching if screen returns to normal.
No change? cold spray each component. no change? resolder everything, no change? replace cap and verticle drive IC.Well that should do it.
See how simple it is.
Piece of cake.

Re: Pakard bell laptop wont power
The power connector on the main board is a weak spot on every laptop as has been gone over here several times with other brands.
Since it's susceptable to bumping I always look at the solder joints closely.
All other external connections should be examined carefully also.
I've seen usb ports crowbarred with pins overlapping.
Any serious scuffing on the case could indicate a drop, check the board in that area again.
Last but not least, look for on board fuse.

Re: AOC 1 second display
I'd be looking for other fuses, very very small surface mount ones.
Should be marked on board with an F number and most of these seem to be green.

Re: Always check your UPS batteries...
Bad batteries are very much like bad caps.
The gel cells bulge and stink and won't hold a charge.
They fail anytime from two to four years.
They have all sorts of wierd names on them yet all look alike.
Come in a large array of sizes and ampere hr ratings and are a PIA when they fail.
