• Re: HP Color Laserjet 4500N

Why do these printers always get toner everywhere? Everything inside is covered in magenta toner.

The question is, why do HP printers in general always make messes of themselves? I scavenged a dead Business Inkjet 1100... all the colors were in there somewhere, I sprayed it out with the garden hose and gave up on it. (It's being modded into a case.) Our DeskJet 880C had about half a cartridge of half-dried black ink in it when we finally opened it up to see why it would only print in black and magenta; even after new cartridges and...

Nobody? I've got the spare monitor hooked up for the time being, but I'd like to get the NEC working again if I can.

  • Re: Lifetime of RAM connectors

If you do have issues, try going over the traces with a soft pencil eraser. It's helped me out a couple times.

  • NEC MultiSync E1100+ display issue

    Hey guys,

A while back I picked up three used 21" CRTs. I have two of them set up as dual monitors on my main PC, which has a Radeon x1600Pro with a DVI to VGA adapter on its secondary output and a VGA as primary. Lately, I've had two problems with the right monitor.

First, the screen began flickering, as if the resolution was well below 60 Hz. I checked, and both outputs are supposedly at 85 Hz. Whatever monitor is plugged into it exhibits this problem. Is this an issue with the DVI converter somehow or is the card at fault? I've double-checked to make sure...

Did the J look like a J combined with a P? They could well be JPce TUR series. Not the best, but not bad. Enermax uses 'em, too....

Wow! Not bad at all, then. Guess that's one more on my good list. Thanks for the proof, Larry.

I don't know whether I believe it, but aren't these Fortron-built? If so, they ought to be fine...

  • Re: Max ram for Compaq Presario s4020wm?

My KM266Pro board, a Biostar, claims to support 2x1GB. However, that's not the same chipset, really, it's some variant of the KM333 remarked. So I doubt this helps...sorry.

  • Re: Your opinion for the minimum speed to define broadband

As far as I'm concerned, it's "fast enough to load a low-quality video faster than you can watch it". I have 1.5 Mbit down, and it's a bit above that - I think 1 Mbit is probably a sufficient download speed for "broadband".

However, I don't believe any upload speed lower than 256 Kbit qualifies. 384K is bad enough! I'd also like to see some sort of maximum latency (ping time)...I guess this knocks satellite out of the running.

I'm pretty sure I know why that one stopped working. It looks like some clumsy 'paper-certified warrior' spilled his Pepsi inside!

    Re: Is this bad??

My digital camera's a Kodak EasyShare CX4200, low-midrange 2 megapixel from a few years ago. Doesn't even have a macro setting. If I want to get a decent picture of a PCB, I take the board in question out and stand it up out on the porch with the sunlight on it, then get the camera as close as I can and still have it be in-focus. That's the only way I've gotten a really clear picture, since I don't have any fluorescent lights (which also help this camera out) at my disposal.

    Hope this helps.

  • Re: What motherboard brands have good caps?

Biostar's doing well nowadays then? My M7VIG-400 (KM266Pro) has all OST and G-Luxon. Good to hear that they've improved!

Intel boards in general, that I've seen, have had good caps, aside from the bad run of Nichicon HM/HNs, which weren't Intel's fault.

  • Re: Is there a list of Socket A motherboards which are immune from the plague

If you end up going socket A still, the older Epox boards had cap issues, but the newer ones, including later Socket A boards, are fine. My 8RDA3I Pro, for example, is all Rubycon and Panasonic.

My personal (read: the most, in theory, I'd have in it would be six or seven computers, usually three) switch is a 100 Mbit 24 port Asante NetStacker II. Got it for free from a buddy of mine whose father works at a large company - they get rid of old stuff all the time, and for some reason, this was old enough.

    Their waste, my gain.

    And kc8adu, that thing's huge!

    Re: LCD or CRT

All CRT. I like having monitors I can drop and not worry about it.

I've also spent a grand total of $0.00 USD for monitors in my lifetime, and gotten several decent 17"s and a good 19" out of it, all CRT of course.

Yeah, after Avira AntiVir decided a few of my programs were Trojans, it got dumped. Using NOD32 now, and yes, I'm loving the update notification.Re: Norton Internet Security

I've been waiting to see this. Always figured people were gonna bend pins anyway, but a new CPU doesn't mean taking everything apart and reinstalling the OS...

Anyway, hope you can get that fixed alright, Will.

  • Re: Windows Vista Pretty Much Sucks

willa, I still play NFS3:HP...It ran fine on my P2-266 with Win95b, 128 megs of RAM, and it runs fine now. Brings back memories.

As for Vista, everything described in this thread is why I still use 2000 and XP. Heck, the PPro-200, OCed to 233, with 64 MB of EDO runs Win2000 tolerably well, and a P3-500 with 256 MB is fine for XP. Probably would've been fine with 128.

But Vista? When the requirements of an operating system are higher than those of the games that I play (ex.: GTA SanAndreas, The Sims 2, to name some...

and.....TC bought a LCD bwahahaha who does that leave then......

It leaves me, I've never actually bought a monitor, always gotten them free - so I have a small fleet of 17"s and a 19" AOC (85 Hz at 1280x, yeehaw). If I was to buy one though, it'd be a 4:3 LCD, I admit. I can't stand things stretched out either.Re: Buying a new monitor
