    bargain test gear!

hey guys ,just managed to get a scope,hameg203-4 20mhz,a signal generator, farnell lfp1,and a power supply manson ep-613 all for £60!

will be my first scope to play around with but need want to get a probe for it,the one that came with it was a standard type one,but would like to get a proper probe for it,which one would i need to get?.

havent a clue what to use the sig gen for yet and if it will be any use for tv repair.

the power supply will be handy,i already have one,but will come in usefull im sure.

will put up some more pics soon. of the insides for anyone who may be interested.

what do you guys think of this stuff?,i know the scope is 20mhz,but should trigger up to around 40mhz i guess?

the guy threw in a large breadboard with power supply connections, art of electronics, and some digital books also!,so i think it isnt a bad buy

on the sig gen, what would the jack socket marked "amp in" be used for?

i use the scope at the moment for checking crystals in my tv sets, its found 2 faulty with no output sine wave so far, will get more into scopes and there uses for tv repair soon.

20mhz should be fine for tv repair it triggers up to 40mhz which i think is more than enough.

thanx for the hameg link that will come in handy as i want to service the scope, clean all the pots switches etc, replace worn dodgy components.

just need to get my head around the signal generator and its uses, how to use it,for tv/amplifier repairs etc.

just waiting for my fluke 87v to turn up next weeklooking forward to it,like a kid in a sweet shop lol

20MHz is fine for 1080p plasma, let alone most electronics repair. It'll likely trigger up to 100MHz, but remember, past around 20MHz, the amplitude scale is completely inaccurate.
What frequency can the generator go up to?
Looks like you got a nice bargain!

You just reminded me the Matrix movie.... load to me the software for driving a military helicopter... Loading ... Ready .. I am driving the helicopter.

I have the feeling that this is an common sound generator, even so if you do not repair stereo preamplifier so to compare their output, you will not find it as interesting.

"on the sig gen, what would the jack socket marked "amp in" be used for?" You can use external source to drive the power amplifier inside the generator, the amp can drive the load down to 3 Ohms, so you can connect the the speaker (4 Ohm or 8 ohm pseaker) to the output terminal and use it to amplify the signal such as audio source through small DC blocking/coupling capacitor (10uF /50V or so, the amplifier uses direct couple with input Z around 100K). I.E. the TV does not have sound through speakers, you can take the Audio line out from the RCA jack (Red and White) one at a time and feed into the amp input, if you do get the sound from RCA jacks, then the problem is down the line after the pre-amp section.
The Square wave out put function can be set to about 150Hz to drive the PWM Dimming control signal pin on the backlight inverter board (if the inverter uses the PWM for dimming control), at 50/50 Pulse width, the backlights will be at about 50% brightness.

1MHz maximum -- not too shabby at all! I need to find deals like this...

great read bud and interesting,ok,i do quite a lot of repairs on guitar amps as well as tv's and other electronics,on the guitar amps could this generator output as a tone generator then?,to trouble shoot scratchy pots, intermittant dodgy jack inputs or even troubleshooting the pre-amp and final amp stages?.

im assuming if the output from the sig gen was plugged into the input of an amp,and putting a scope on the output of the amp i can trouble shoot that way by looking at the waveform?or am i thinking of this all the wrong way?

id love to know other uses for this, it really is exciting stuff, its just getting my head around using it and the techniques to apply to it and aid in troubleshooting.doesnt seem a lot rumaging around you tube as far as amps repair using a sig gen.

@tom, il keep my eyes open for a deal, seem to get them popping up quite a bit il drop you a mail if i see something that may be of interest.by the way when you say on the scope that the amplitude will suffer if going up to a 100mhz trigger,do you mean the sine wave etc will look "flatter"on the scope?more of a straight line than a wave.

                      Re: bargain test gear!

You can use the sig gen and scope to do exactly that, it's easier than trying with music sources because it's more predictable.

The sine wave amplitude will fall, it will not be particularly distorted but it will represent around 1/3rd its actual amplitude at 100MHz, still, this is not usually a problem.
