I got started on my ESR Meter kit today and discovered that eventhough I ordered a MK2 AND the downloaded manual for the kit is about a MK2 ... then my kit is NOT a MK 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I send the seller a mail so let's see how he reacts

I'm so sick and tired of these displays going down after a few years

I think the hardest job is to find out where these damned plastic clips are holding it all together.

... but let's see how it turns out - thx anyway !

    Good or bad ?

Thank you, i was concerned about charged caps but i see that the meter can be ordered with protection diodes.

I doubt that is going to happen any time soon.

Look on Google, there are many other ESR meter designs available and with source code, if you want to make something yourself.

    ESR... ripple current... hydrogen liberation...

Christ, we're talking about one type of many different components on any PCB - basically if it looks buggered or I think it may be buggered then I replace it, sometimes on a somewhat trial-and-error basis, but almost always with success.

Bob Parker's ESR kit still available!

    Caution - blatant, self-serving ad!

If anyone here is looking for the Dick Smith (DSE) K-7214 ESR kit for measuring electrolytic capacitors in circuit please feel free to visit:

    http://flippers.com/esrktord-form.html for more info.

I have about 150 left in stock.

PS, for those of you that already have the kit Bob set up a poll to find out if folks wanted the meter continued as a kit or pre-assembled you can find it at the top of our ESR support page:

    Cheers,
I'm happy that this meter I originally only designed for me is useful to lots of others who are having problems with Bad Caps.

Just for everyone's information, Dick Smith Electronics down here in Australia has completely gotten out of the kits business. No more ESR meters are going to be produced.

Most of the remaining stock of them is now at John's Jukes in Vancouver, Canada. He ships world-wide and his prices and customer service are good.

    His website is at http://www.flippers.com

Wellllllllllllllll ... these two pages from UCC say it indirectly:
    http://www.chemi-con.com/u7002/life.php
    http://www.chemi-con.com/u7002/failure.php

The failure chart points out that excessive ripple current causes increase internal pressure. The life page points out that excessive ripple current causes oxide formation on the cathode foil. Hydrogen gas is a byproduct of oxide formation and the cause of the rise in internal pressure.

I've just done a whole lot of net searching to find out more about ripple current causing hydrogen liberation in electrolytic caps and can't find a thing. The manufacturers say hydrogen generation is a function of DC leakage, and ripple current simply causes I2R heating.
Can you please direct me to more info on this subject? Thanks.

Is it possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue meter?
    by chth96
I read EBOOK of Testing Electronic Component and found that

"In order to test the small blue resin coated ceramic disk capacitor which has 104 50v specification,it is possible to test this small ceramic capacitor by making use of analogue meter.
Set to times 10Kohm that has 12v output from the probe to check disorder of ceramic capacitor.
It is not uncommon that testing result of digital capacitance meter is okay,But It show shorted reading when you check it with analogue meter."

Is it really possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue...

Magnum IA.100 Amplifier Switches on, No Output, Possible Input Side fault?
    by flibidy
I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.

The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.

Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.

lowest current galvanometer/analog meter (passively powered!)
    by eccerr0r
Most analog meters are actually current driven - a current is needed to deflect the pointer full scale. They can be lots of different values. There are ones that can take several amperes to swing the pointer as they have internal shunts.

On the other hand there are many that are rated in microamps for the intent that they draw as little power as possible from the devices under test. Some are 1mA, 500µA, 200µA, 100µA, and the ubiquitous 50µA frequently used in analog VOMs. There are even 20, 25, 30 µA and even down to 10µA. Been collecting a bunch of different ratings and...

How Can I test PWM DM0365R?
    by chth96
    Hello
I have power adaptor(220V/input, 12V 1.2A/output) which has symptom of fluctuating output DC voltage between 11.5V-12.2V.
So I opened its plastic case and when switched it on, I heard constant tik tik sound from inside its PCB.
I measured DC voltage between negative and positive pin of the largest capacitor(400v 10uf) and it was measured contant 300V.
I also measured ESR value of all capacitors and I noticed that one of capacitor(KMG 16v 470uf), which located in the secondary side, have high ESR value(10 ohm),So I replaced it with same specification NXH capacitor....

test active pfc power with lamp test
    by khelane
    Hello
I have a big problem and that is that in some cases when repairing active pfc power supplies I cannot work with a test lamp. I can only get help with 5 volts standby and for starting and starting I have to work without a lamp and this way there is a possibility of parts exploding and other parts being added.
Sometimes with a multimeter test the problems can be reduced to some extent, but I had several cases that had to be tested on and online and recently two varistors exploded. They had terrible resistance because the power supplies were over 800 watts.
    Is there a way...
