Re: Apple-spend thousands instead of upgrading

why would i say that to a cop?

      cop cannot enforce the eula.
when the vast majority of end users ignore the eula it should tell m$ something.

i know. im just saying that one of the assumptions of the argument was we are legal. that means no pirated crap or hackintosh.

linux isn't always legal, that's why debian and separate repositories are there

If the cop was enforcing a rule on you, he wouldn't take the argument. If it was just discussion I doubt he would care.

Plenty of countries have or have had laws that violate human rights. Would you just say "you have to follow the law" on those? That is a bit more extreme but evaluating laws by morality still stands.

You can get a 90 day free trial of windows 7 for now or if you or your kids have a college or university .edu address you can get windows 7 Home or possibly pro for $30. For $30 I will use the OS that has the biggest market share by far.

              Apple Rant:
Maybe if apple could program itunes to be able to sync between 2 different PCs without wiping your phone, didn't wait 2 years to include MMS ( I had this for 4 years before I bought an iphone and stupidly assumed it was a given), overpriced replacement hardware, pompous users, will most likely fail when SJ dies. I would consider at least giving their OS a try.

As far as Linux/Ubuntu/useless goes get together with the 6 other people who use them and keep running crappy machines I wouldn't piss on to put a fire out and cry on every forum possible about how secure your operating system that no one uses/cares about/thinks you have any money so there is no reason to try and identity theft you is. Is it just me or do linux users remind you of Buddhist monks at the airport? Stop no one cares! Any systems admin/person with a job will tell you that no one in their user base could handle an OS that is as user unfriendly but not so easy to use only an idiot would want to use it ( apple).

Nobody cares except for the server/enterprise people. The bulk of Linux users are programmers and networking people. We're not talking consumers here. Consumers can barely click the mouse and identify icons. Windows viruses are so common mainly because of them.

LoL, its just ratdude. You shouldn't dismiss the entire OS. There are things it can do that windows can't and vice versa.

BS. people do care. thats why we have threads like this. dont like, start a new one or dont post.

and there are over 1 million linux users worldwide. not 6. 1,000,000>6.

about money, im saying that 30 bux can buy you better (140 for most)... 4gb flashdives go for 15 now, 140 could get you a new mobo, some ram, etc. im saying that if you have money, dont flush it down the john.

our machines arnt crappy, most will do xp. some i know even run i7 with linux. what im saying is you get more speed out of your hardware; a fast machine should not be an excuse to bloat things for no good reason.

as for usability, ubuntu 9.10 is much improved in that regard... in the 100 papercuts challenge, they adrresed many complaints/suggestions and have:

overhauled package management- say hello to "ubuntu software center". like the iphone's app store but its all free, with non-free linux ware the next goal.

integrated cloud computing via Ubuntu one. they give 2gb online free or 10gb for a small fee if you need it (4.99 a month i think).

there are more improvements, but im too lazy too type them all.

dont attack me like that, use FACTS for your points, not personal attacks.

You can't beat compiz on OS frills. Mac/Windows cannot do all of the funky things it does with visualizations. Whether spinning cubes and wobbly windows are actually useful is another debate. As of now windows cannot do it without 3rd party apps.

Re: Apple-spend thousands instead of upgrading

compiz rules! the cube/mutiple workspaces thing is a big plus. helps you keep open apps organized. i run 4 workspaces on a cube, ill usually have chrome on one, email on another, a game or openoffice app on the next, and other stuff like terminal or xsensors on the last.

wobbly windows is sweet looking too.

another thing compiz does is it lets you add effects to the screen. you can (bu holing a key combo and a mouse button):

                      paint fire on your screen
make it rain on the screen with optional windshield wiper
and my favorite, let you draw on the screen... handy if i had a touch screen, right now its like a SMART board without touch.

it will do even MORE, but those things i haven't used. im sorry but aero is beat this time.

I love how you Linux people always talk about the latest version. "9.10 is much improved... oh, support for [xxx] is coming in the next version... oh, [xxx] distro of Linux has really good support for [xxx], much better than [xxx] version". I have news for you. All those things work in Windows, NOW. Not in the next version. Not in the next service pack. Not in the next update. NOW. Not only that, they have BEEN working. For years.

I also love how they talk about how Compiz is so much better than Aero. Oooh look, you can draw fire on your screen. SO. WHAT. I fire up my computer to check my email, talk to bitches, download music, read digg, catch up with all my favorite forums, go for a round of video games, etc. etc., not to draw stupid shit on my screen and drool while my windows wobble. Aero's soft fade outs and see-thru stuff puts a glossy finish on a stellar OS, and that's all I need it to do. If workspaces are your thing then yeah, Linux has Windows beat in that regard, but that's all. Don't tout drawing fire and wobbling windows as reason why Linux is better than Windows.

the support thing is not linux's fault, its window's policy of not testing before approving. it works now, we hope. also, with linux, we believe its worth waiting for it a bit if what you get is faster, more stable. if you want it NOW, bleeding edge, then its called upgrade to the alpha/beta version.

the last problem is hardware companies that HATE linux because Bill gates pays them to flip off linux, by not giving any support, leaving linux programmers to reverse-engineer them. its not linux's fault that some companies sign deals. its the stupid consumers who buy it.

You further proved my point by saying "i don't have time to set them up". Not only do these things not work automatically out of the box the way they should, but they are so useless that you haven't even bothered to try them.

What. The. Fuck? What the fuck do you mean "it works now, we hope"? Most everything works great in Windows, which is much more than can be said for your shitty OS, so please assume the position, shut the fuck up, and admit that Windows supports far, far more devices.

The problem is that no company gives a flying fuck about Linux. There are no "deals". Companies have no obligation WHATSOEVER to help out Linux programmers.

first, fuck you for the low blow. i have a life, fuck off

                              2. oh, trust me, look what happed with vista. also, with windows, for my stuff that does work (99% of it), no drivers needed. xp, drivers galore. also, with more stuff is included by defailt; openoffice, tons more games than windows has by default, cpu speed control, advanced photo editing, etc.

                              3. i never said the deals were "wrong". most companies or in the middle, giving drivers with little support otherwise. lots of companies USE linux. some flatscreen tvs use linux for the core system, higher end handhelds use linux, ibm, dell, hp sell computers with linux on them. even MICROSOFT uses linux on their india web server (red hat). nero, powerdvd, labview (high end programming), adobe flash, and adobe reader come linux versions.

                              4. i know for most users, linux is the best deal. im making linux look good by not being a pussy that accepts lies. i speak the truth.

                              5. i personally do not feel like setting them as a priority. but, everybody has their likes and dislikes. the options are there so you make it what you want. thats the whole idea of linux, to be able to do what you want it to do. you control the computer, not the person writing the software. its your machine, so you should have authority over it.

                                      Ahh the debate rages on.

Linux does not suck. However, neither is it perfect.

                                      Particularly annoying example:

In Gnome Mplayer, whenever I play through a simple playlist of MP3's, it will mute the sound every time it plays a new file. Every time! It didn't used to do that a couple months ago. They broke it. Even after I put the volume where I want it, there's a 50/50 chance it will slowly drop off to nothing. Why? Doesn't anyone test this crap before it's rammed into the release?

The other little issue is that when you right click on a download in the Mozilla Firefox download window, and select "Open Containing Folder" it doesn't know what to do. There's just no excuse for that one. Sure there's a fix out there for it, and I did that last time I installed Fedora. Still, annoying.

I can accept these problems readily in exchange for:
                                      1. No viruses.
                                      2. Free software.
                                      3. Compiz.
                                      4. Not having people's U3 filesystem flash drive take over the computer every time it's plugged in.
                                      5. Gparted.
                                      6. dd. If you don't know what it is, find out.
                                      7. Everything's a file.
                                      a. Backups are simpler. No registry to screw with.
                                      b. If you want to change something, go change it.
                                      8. Gnome desktop. When properly set up by someone who knows WTF they're doing, even the most novice user can get their stuff done.

I have more if you want 'em.

We also need to look at how long most people have used Windows vs. how long they've used Linux. Usually they've been using Windows for most of their life. How long have they been using Linux? Oh, maybe 1 day. So they try to do things like they do them on Windows, something doesn't work the way they think it should, so they declare it sucks and go back to what they know. The louder ones will announce this on the internet and declare that Windows is god and Linux sucks.

As you can see, I have some very good reasons I like, use, and continue to promote Linux. Of course, I switched several years ago and have it pretty much figured out.

Then there's the Microsoft shills on the internet forums. We all know they exist. They are pretty good at hiding who they are too. It's the problem that nobody wants to face...
